The short version: parry a readable attack as its weapon enters the contact phase, dodge attacks marked by a red aura because they are unblockable, and block when the timing is too difficult to read. A successful parry opens an immediate counterattack; a perfect dodge briefly slows time for your follow-up; and a block costs health that you can recover by countering immediately. Hits and parries fill posture, so stay close and use a heavy attack or finisher when the posture bar breaks.
Valor Mortis does not have a publicly verified, universal parry window in frames or milliseconds. Timing depends on reading the animation, the attack type, the weapon and potentially the enemy. Treat frame-perfect numbers published without authoritative data as guesses.
Parry, dodge or block? Use this decision table

These are three different answers to three different problems. Parry is the proactive read, dodge is the answer to an attack that cannot be safely absorbed or parried, and block is the forgiving fallback that becomes efficient only when followed by a counter.

Read the attack’s commitment before pressing a button
Do not react to the first movement of every animation. An enemy may raise a weapon, turn its shoulders or step forward long before the actual hit. Watch for the point at which the attack has committed and the weapon is traveling toward your space. Your defensive input should match that contact phase.

This distinction matters because Valor Mortis does not let you cancel an attack animation into a parry. If you start a swing that you cannot finish, the parry input will not rescue you halfway through it. Connor Bridgeman, Director of Marketing at Lyrical Games, states in the October 13, 2026 Xbox Wire guidance: “You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish.” Leave yourself enough time to complete your current attack or stop committing to offense before the next defensive read.
Red-aura attacks are the clearest exception to the normal parry decision. The combat reference identifies them as unblockable, while the official guidance describes the perfect-dodge reward. When the red aura appears, stop looking for a parry or a normal block and prepare a late dodge instead.
How to parry consistently
1. Confirm that the attack is parryable
Parry is available only on weapons and attacks that support it. If the enemy’s attack is marked as unblockable, use dodge. If you cannot yet distinguish the animation, block once while you learn it rather than repeatedly gambling on an early parry.

Identify the moment the weapon stops being a threat in preparation and becomes a strike. Press parry as the weapon enters that final approach. The practical cue is late in the animation, not at the beginning of the wind-up. Because no official frame count has been published, use the visual distance and speed of the incoming weapon rather than a memorized number.
3. Tap once
A single deliberate press gives you a clearer read than mashing. Repeated inputs can make it difficult to tell whether you were early, late or simply hit a second input after the attack had already passed. Keep your eyes on the impact and make one timing decision.

4. Confirm the metallic clang
On a weapon that supports parry, a clean success produces a metallic clang and sets up a counterattack. That sound is your confirmation that the defensive read worked. If you do not hear it, assume the parry did not create the counter opportunity and return to defense rather than swinging automatically.
5. Counter immediately, then reset
Use the counter while the opening is available. If you miss the follow-up, do not chase it with an unsafe extra swing; return to neutral and read the next attack. The parry counter is the immediate reward for a successful defensive read, not the same thing as the larger finisher earned from a posture break.
Why early parries fail
An early press can finish before the weapon reaches you, leaving the attack unchallenged. A late press arrives after the hit has landed. The correction is not to mash faster: watch one full attack, note where the contact occurs, and move your single press toward that point on the next attempt.
When to dodge—and how to land a perfect dodge
Use dodge for red-aura attacks and any situation in which blocking or parrying is not a safe answer. The red aura is the practical warning that the attack is unblockable. A normal dodge avoids the hit; a perfect dodge, performed immediately before contact, gives you a short period of slow motion for the next attack.
Make the dodge late, not panicked
Start with the enemy’s weapon or body moving into the final part of its swing. If you dodge as soon as the enemy begins to move, you may finish the evasive animation while the strike is still traveling. The useful mental cue is “evade the impact,” not “evade the wind-up.”

Spend the slow-motion window
After a perfect dodge, use the brief slow-motion opportunity to place a measured follow-up. It is a chance to regain initiative, not a reason to mash several attacks. Choose a strike that leaves enough recovery time to defend against the enemy’s next action.

An early dodge usually means the attack had not reached its contact phase; a late dodge means the hit arrived before your invulnerability or repositioning could help. Watch the same attack again and adjust only the timing. Do not change direction, attack choice and dodge timing all at once, or you will not know what fixed the problem.
Block is a fallback with a built-in recovery loop
Block is the right choice when an attack is difficult to read, when you have not learned the enemy’s timing, or when a risky parry could cost more health than it saves. It is not a no-damage defense. Official guidance says blocking costs health, but a counter performed immediately after the block restores the health you lost.
The block-counter rhythm
- Raise your guard before the attack arrives.
- Allow the hit to be absorbed instead of releasing block early.
- Counter as soon as the block has connected.
- Return to a defensive stance if the counter window has passed.
This turns block into an “absorb, answer, recover” loop. Holding block without countering simply trades health for time. The recovery is tied to the immediate counter, so do not wait through several enemy actions and expect the lost health to return later.
Posture breaks determine when to use the big punish
Posture is the fight-ending resource. Attacks and successful parries fill the posture bar. When it breaks, stay close enough for the prompt to connect and use the available heavy attack or finisher.

Do not confuse the two counter opportunities
A parry counter happens directly after a clean parry and answers one incoming strike. A posture finisher happens later, after enough attacks and parries have broken the enemy’s posture. A perfect dodge creates a separate slow-motion follow-up, while a block counter both answers the attack and restores the health spent on blocking. Choosing the right follow-up prevents you from waiting for a finisher that is not yet available.
Position for the finisher
When the posture bar breaks, avoid backing away automatically. The finisher requires range, and the official guidance specifically warns players to stay close enough for the finisher prompt to connect. If the prompt does not appear, close the distance first rather than wasting the posture-break opening on a long-range swing.
A practical decision process during a fight
- Look for the red aura. If it appears, plan a late dodge; do not treat the attack as a normal block or parry test.
- If there is no red aura, read the commitment. Decide whether the weapon and animation give you a repeatable contact cue.
- Parry a readable strike. Tap once at the contact phase, listen for the metallic confirmation and take the counter.
- Block an uncertain strike. Absorb it, then counter immediately to recover the health cost.
- After every exchange, reassess. Do not begin an attack that prevents your next defense.
- Watch posture. When the bar breaks, remain in range and use the heavy attack or finisher instead of returning to neutral.
This sequence keeps the priority order clear: first identify whether the attack is unblockable, then choose a timing defense or a forgiving fallback, and finally convert accumulated posture into the larger punish.

“My parry works sometimes, but not on every enemy.”
There is no confirmed universal window covering every enemy, weapon or patch state. Compare the animation rather than assuming that one enemy’s timing transfers to another. Also verify that the weapon you are using supports parry and that the incoming move is not unblockable.
“I hear no clang and still get hit.”
You probably pressed before the contact phase, pressed after impact, or attempted to parry an attack that cannot be parried. Observe the full wind-up once, then move a single press later or switch to dodge if the red aura appears.

“I parry successfully but lose the opening.”
The counter is an immediate follow-up. Keep your attack input ready, but do not mash before the parry confirmation. If the opening has already passed, reset instead of forcing a slow attack into the enemy’s recovery.
“My dodge avoids the hit but I never get slow motion.”
You performed a normal dodge rather than a perfect one. Move the input closer to the instant of contact. The perfect-dodge benefit is a brief slow-motion window, so an early roll can be safe without producing that reward.
“Blocking keeps draining my health.”
Blocking is expected to cost health. Counter immediately after the block to restore the amount lost. If you cannot identify the counter timing yet, use block as a learning tool, then practice replacing the same defense with a parry once the attack’s contact point is familiar.
“The finisher prompt appears, but the finisher misses.”
You are likely outside the required range. Stay close when posture breaks and move into the prompt before committing to another attack. The finisher opening is short enough that retreating first can waste it.
How to practice without memorizing fake frame data
Use repeatable encounters to build visual timing. Pick one ordinary attack and watch it several times without attacking. On the first attempt, block to learn the impact; on the next, parry at the point where the weapon is entering contact. For a red-aura move, repeat the same observation while delaying the dodge until the strike is nearly on you. Change only one variable per attempt.
- Practice one enemy move at a time rather than mixing several attack speeds.
- Use the metallic clang as the parry result and the slow-motion effect as the perfect-dodge result.
- After a successful defense, perform the correct follow-up immediately so the timing becomes a complete sequence, not an isolated reaction.
- When posture is nearly full, prioritize safe attacks and parries so the break occurs while you are still in range.
- Stop an offensive string early if it would prevent the next parry or dodge; attack commitment is part of defense.
The goal is a reliable visual cue, not a number. Until authoritative frame data exists for a specific enemy and patch, a claim such as “the parry lasts exactly X milliseconds” is not established.
What is officially established
Valor Mortis launched on October 13, 2026. Xbox Wire lists it as available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC and Game Pass. The Xbox Wire explanation by Connor Bridgeman, Director of Marketing at Lyrical Games, and the official developer post published October 13, 2026, establish the functional rules: parry produces a metallic confirmation and counter opportunity, perfect dodge creates slow motion, and block followed immediately by a counter restores the health lost while blocking.
