Eternal Guards are posture-and-timing encounters, not damage races. Build posture with readable parries and safe attacks, dodge the red unblockable strike, then spend the opening after a posture break on a heavy attack or finisher. Valor Mortis has one fixed difficulty, so preparation comes from Lantern upgrades, weapons, firearms, Ambers, rally mechanics and environmental tools rather than an easier setting.
There are two different questions behind “Do Eternal Guards respawn?” Ordinary, non-boss guards are reported to reset after you rest at a Lantern. The seven named Oathbound Guards are fixed, ability-gated quest encounters; no published source confirms that their emblems or Mysterious Stone Pyramids return for repeat farming.
What an Eternal Guard fight is testing
An Eternal Guard punishes the usual soulslike mistake of treating every encounter as a race to empty an enemy health bar. The reliable objective is to control posture while preserving enough stamina and healing to survive the exchange. Normal attacks create opportunities to parry or block, while the red attack cue marks a strike that cannot be blocked and must be dodged.
The official Xbox Wire overview of Valor Mortis, written by Lyrical Games marketing director Connor Bridgeman and published October 13, 2026, describes the combat systems as interlocking. Blades damage posture, firearms can hit weak points, weak-point hits refill nephtoglobin, and kills often provide ammunition. Against an Eternal Guard, those connections let you convert a defensive read into healing, ammunition or a posture punish instead of relying on raw weapon damage.

Why posture matters more than damage
A normal hit may remove health without creating a safe follow-up. A successful parry, by contrast, contributes to the posture pressure that eventually staggers the Guard. When the posture break occurs, immediately use the heavy attack or finisher your current opening allows. Delaying that punish gives the enemy time to recover and wastes the main reward for taking the risk of parrying.
Exact Eternal Guard health totals, posture thresholds, damage values and parry-frame windows have not been published. Do not build a strategy around an assumed number of parries or a memorized frame count. Watch the current animation, use the red visual cue for the unblockable, and adjust to the weapon and Guard variant in front of you.
How to beat an Eternal Guard
- Enter with a resource plan. Confirm that your Lantern setup, healing supply, ammunition and Fire Transmutation are ready before pulling the Guard. If the route includes hazards or a cramped arena, clear anything that can interrupt your retreat first.
- Watch the opening swing. Stay at a distance where the first attack is visible rather than standing directly inside the Guard’s weapon arc. The first clean read tells you whether the sequence is a single normal strike, a chain or the red unblockable.
- Parry readable normal hits. Press the parry for ordinary attacks when the animation commits. Successive hits in a combo can also be parried when their individual animations provide a readable timing window; do not assume that every hit in a string shares one timing.
- Dodge the red attack. The red cue identifies an unblockable attack. Blocking it is not a fallback. Move out of its path, then re-center so the next normal swing remains visible.
- Use block-and-counter when the parry is late. If your timing is uncertain, a block can prevent the full hit from landing. Counter afterward to recover health lost while blocking, then return to spacing rather than holding block indefinitely.
- Exploit the posture break immediately. When the Guard staggers, spend the opening on a heavy attack or finisher. This is the highest-value damage window in the loop and is safer than trying to force another light attack during recovery.
- Convert weak points into sustain. Firearms can strike glowing weak points. Those hits refill nephtoglobin, giving you a way to restore the resource needed for recovery and other abilities while maintaining distance.
- Add Fire Transmutation when the opening is safe. Fire pressure can supplement posture play, but it should not replace the parry-and-punish rhythm. Apply it after a dodge, block-counter or posture break instead of during an unreadable attack string.
- Reset after each exchange. After the punish, create enough space to see the next animation. Greedy extra swings are the common reason a successful posture break turns into a trade.
Reading combos without guessing frame data
Use the weapon’s visible commitment as your timing reference. A shoulder turn, step-in or raised weapon is more useful than an online claim that a parry lasts a certain number of frames, because no authoritative frame data has been published. If the first hit is parried and another hit follows, keep watching the animation and parry each readable impact separately.
What to do after a missed parry
A missed parry does not require an all-or-nothing recovery. If the attack is blockable, block and counter to reclaim some of the health lost through blocking. If the red cue appears, abandon the parry attempt and dodge. The priority is surviving the sequence; posture progress from the next clean read is worth more than forcing a risky response now.

Difficulty: there is no easier setting
Current fan-maintained difficulty documentation lists Valor Mortis as shipping with one fixed difficulty and no easy mode, selectable difficulty levels or slider. You cannot lower an Eternal Guard’s challenge from a menu. Progress comes from learning the encounter and using the systems that the game provides.
Lantern upgrades and build preparation
Lanterns are the central preparation point. Upgrade them as soon as the progression path permits, and use the available setup to support the way you intend to fight: more reliable parry-and-rally play, stronger firearms and weak-point access, better healing economy, or more room for utility effects. The official overview states that Ambers become available at Lanterns and that the number you can equip increases as William levels.
Examples named in the official overview include Marksman’s Bane, Volatile End and Butcher’s Carnage. Their value in an Eternal Guard fight is not simply “more damage.” An Amber can change how you approach weak points, burn pressure, ammunition or recovery, allowing you to create more safe posture opportunities.
Weapon and firearm choices
- Blades: Use them to build posture through controlled parries and safe follow-up hits.
- Firearms: Keep a line of sight to glowing weak points so a shot can refill nephtoglobin and help sustain the encounter.
- Fire Transmutation: Apply burn pressure during a confirmed opening rather than trying to cast through an incoming string.
- Healing and rally: Treat rally as a way to recover lost health through deliberate counters, not as permission to trade hits.
Environmental tools
Environmental hazards are part of the fixed-difficulty toolkit. They can soften an encounter or create separation, but they also add positioning risk. Before engaging, identify where a hazard is, whether the Guard can reach you through it and where you will retreat after a red attack. A route that requires a later mobility or exploration ability may be better postponed even if the Guard itself is technically visible earlier.

The seven named Oathbound Guards
The named set consists of seven Oathbound Guards scattered across the game. They are ability-gated quest encounters: you can tackle the targets in any order once the relevant progression abilities open their routes, but you cannot necessarily reach every target the first time you discover its general area.
The guide reward associated with completing the set is a Mysterious Stone Slab. Treat the Oathbound series as side-quest and exploration progression unless a current build explicitly establishes that a particular target is required for the main story. The available guidance does not establish such a story requirement.
A practical order for the Oathbound route
- Record the location when you discover it. Do not spend resources trying to force an inaccessible route.
- Identify the missing ability. A blocked passage, traversal gap or environmental interaction usually signals a progression gate rather than a combat problem.
- Return after the ability is acquired. Revisit the Lantern nearest the target and prepare a loadout for posture control and weak-point sustain.
- Complete targets in the order that suits your route. The seven can be tackled in any order once their access requirements are met.
- Track the reward separately from repeat farming. The Mysterious Stone Slab is the set’s stated guide reward; it should not be assumed to behave like a renewable ordinary-enemy drop.
Do Eternal Guards respawn?
Ordinary, non-boss Eternal Guards are reported to reset when you rest at a Lantern. That makes a nearby group repeatable: clear the guards, return to the Lantern, rest, and check the route again. The report does not establish a universal official timer; the reset is tied to the Lantern-rest loop.
The seven named Oathbound Guards are different. They are fixed quest encounters, and no cited source confirms a repeatable respawn for their emblems or Mysterious Stone Pyramids. Do not plan a farming route around the assumption that a completed Oathbound target will return with the same reward.

How to test an ordinary-Guard route safely
- Note the Lantern and the exact group you intend to clear.
- Clear the group without leaving the route, and record what drops for your own build.
- Return to that Lantern and rest once.
- Travel back and verify whether the same ordinary guards have reset.
- Repeat only if the time and resource cost justify it. A route-specific result is not evidence of a global timer or fixed Catalyst yield.
Choosing parry, block or movement
Each approach trades reliability, stamina and resources differently. The right choice depends on how clearly you can read the current animation and whether the route requires a later mobility ability.

Common mistakes and fixes
Trying to burst the health bar
Symptom: repeated light attacks produce trades and leave no safe exit. Fix: shorten each exchange, prioritize one readable parry or block-counter, and reserve the heavy attack or finisher for a posture break.
Blocking the red attack
Symptom: the red strike consistently defeats your guard. Fix: treat the cue as a movement instruction. Dodge first, then face the Guard again before attacking.

Symptom: stamina disappears before the sequence ends. Fix: block only when the timing is uncertain, counter to recover lost health, and move away rather than absorbing every hit.

Forcing an Oathbound route too early
Symptom: the target is visible but a traversal or exploration obstacle prevents access. Fix: mark the location, continue progression until the required ability is acquired, then return from the nearest Lantern.
Assuming every reset is a permanent farm
Symptom: an ordinary-Guard reset leads you to expect the same behavior from a named Oathbound target. Fix: separate repeatable non-boss groups from fixed quest encounters. Rest-based reset evidence applies to the former, not automatically to the latter.
What the encounters unlock
The seven Oathbound Guards primarily connect combat mastery with exploration progression. Their routes ask you to return after acquiring abilities, and completing the set is associated with the Mysterious Stone Slab. Ordinary Eternal Guards, by contrast, are useful as repeatable combat practice and resource opportunities when a Lantern is nearby.

The official systems described for Valor Mortis make preparation meaningful without adding a lower difficulty: Lantern upgrades expand build options, William’s levels increase Amber capacity, firearms can convert weak-point accuracy into nephtoglobin, and posture breaks create decisive punish windows. Use those systems to make the fight more consistent rather than searching for an unverified health threshold, parry number or universal farming timer.
