In Valor Mortis, parry readable attacks, dodge attacks marked by their unblockable behavior, and keep enough stamina for the next defensive decision. A successful parry builds enemy posture; when posture breaks, stay close and use the light-attack finisher before the opening disappears.
The difficult part is commitment. Attacks cannot be canceled into a parry, blocking costs health, and panic-dodging can leave you unable to react. The safest fights follow a repeatable rhythm: observe, defend with the correct response, take a short punish, and reset before your resources run out.

The combat rule in one sentence
Choose your defense from the attack you are actually seeing, not from a fixed combo: parry a readable, parryable strike; dash away from an unblockable or unsafe one; block only when a hit is too difficult to meet cleanly; then spend the opening on posture damage without emptying your stamina bar.
This distinction matters because Valor Mortis treats defense as part of offense. Timed parries and attacks fill posture, weak-point shots create resource advantages, and a broken posture can lead directly to a visceral finisher. Dodging is not merely retreating either: a perfect dodge briefly slows time, giving you a controlled chance to reposition or punish a miss.

How the combat loop fits together
The game combines close-range swordplay with a left-hand firearm or power slot. The official combat guidance presents parries, dashes, visceral finishers, firearms and powers as parts of one loop rather than isolated systems.
Read the threat
Watch the opponent’s weapon, body turn and attack line. Your first question is whether the incoming move can be parried. Do not press a defensive input merely because an enemy has started moving; wait for the strike’s contact beat.
Answer with the right defense
- Parry: use against a readable, parryable melee attack. A timed parry adds posture damage and can leave the enemy open.
- Dodge or dash: use against an unblockable attack, a timing pattern you cannot confidently read, or a line of attack that would make a parry unsafe.
- Block: use as an emergency response when the hit is too hard to parry. Blocking spends a little health, so it is not a damage-free default.
Convert the opening
After a parry, a whiff or a weak-point exposure, take the shortest attack that advances the fight while preserving control. When posture breaks, remain within light-attack range and trigger the finisher immediately.
Reset before the next exchange
Do not continue attacking just because an enemy is nearby. If stamina is low or the opponent has recovered, create space, watch the next animation and begin the loop again.
How to parry in Valor Mortis
Parrying is the main way to build posture against attacks whose timing and direction you can read. The authoritative combat guidance separates parryable attacks from unblockable attacks, so a parry is powerful but deliberately not universal.
Use the contact beat, not the wind-up
Beginners often press the parry input as soon as an enemy raises a weapon. That usually produces an early attempt. Instead, track the swing until it is about to connect, using the weapon’s movement and the accompanying sound as timing cues. No verified official source publishes a universal frame count, so do not train around a made-up millisecond window; enemy animations and attack types determine the practical timing.
A repeatable parry procedure
- Stop your own attack and identify the enemy that is actually committed to striking you.
- Check whether the move is a normal, readable attack rather than an unblockable one.
- Keep enough stamina for the defensive input and the movement that may follow it.
- Watch the weapon or attack effect approach its contact point.
- Press parry late, at the contact beat, rather than at the beginning of the animation.
- After a successful parry, take a controlled hit or reposition if another enemy is threatening you. Do not automatically start a full string.
Why a missed parry is costly
A late parry can become a hit, while an early one can leave you exposed when the attack arrives. If several enemies are active, a technically successful parry against one target may still put you in the path of another. Use the camera and arena space to ensure the reward is worth the risk.

What a successful parry gives you
Timed parries contribute posture damage and can be the safest route to a stagger. They also let you stay close enough to capitalize when the posture bar finally breaks. Think of each parry as progress toward a finisher, not as an invitation to spend every available resource on immediate damage.

When to dodge instead of parry
Use a dodge or dash when an attack is unblockable, when its timing is deliberately awkward, or when your position makes meeting it with a parry too dangerous. The official combat instructions explicitly direct players to dodge unblockable attacks rather than absorb them.
Unblockable attacks
An unblockable move is a dodge problem, not a parry challenge. If the attack is identified as unblockable by its visual or audio presentation, leave its line of attack with a dash. Do not stand still hoping that a late block will save you; blocking is not presented as a safe answer to every threat.
Awkward timing and uncertain reads
Some attacks are technically readable but have a delayed release or an unusual rhythm. If you cannot identify the contact beat with confidence, a single well-timed dodge is safer than repeated panic parries. Reposition so the enemy must commit again on a clearer angle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePerfect dodges
A perfect dodge briefly slows time. Use that pause to choose an outcome: step to the opponent’s flank, line up a short punish, move away from a second attacker or simply regain a stable distance. The slow-motion effect is an opportunity to make a decision, not a command to launch another attack.
Dodge discipline
Movement shares your stamina budget with attacks and other defensive actions. Chaining several dodges to correct one mistake can leave you unable to answer the next strike. Prefer one decisive dash and a new position over a sequence of panic rolls.
Why attacks leave you exposed
Valor Mortis does not let you cancel an attack animation into a parry. Connor Bridgeman, director of marketing at Lyrical Games, summarizes the rule in the official launch tips: “You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish.”
That limitation changes when you should attack. Begin a swing after an enemy has whiffed, staggered or exposed a weak point, not merely because the target is within reach. If the opponent is still active and you have no stamina reserve, waiting is often the aggressive choice: you preserve the ability to defend and force the enemy to reveal the next opening.

Safer attack triggers
- The enemy’s attack has missed and its recovery is visible.
- A successful parry has interrupted the opponent.
- Posture is close to breaking and a short hit can finish the meter without trapping you in a long animation.
- A weak point is exposed and a firearm shot will create a meaningful advantage.
- A perfect dodge has slowed time and placed you outside the enemy’s immediate follow-up.
Unsafe attack triggers
- The target is idle only because you are standing at the edge of its attack range.
- Several opponents can reach you before your animation ends.
- Your stamina is nearly empty and the enemy has not committed.
- You are starting a long string to recover from a mistake rather than to exploit a confirmed opening.
Blocking: an emergency tool with a recovery payoff
Blocking is not free defense. The official tips state that it costs a little health. That makes it a fallback for a hit you cannot confidently parry, not a replacement for learning attack timing.

The block-and-counter loop
The same guidance says that a prompt counterattack after blocking restores the health lost while blocking. Treat this as a defensive heal loop:
- Block when the incoming hit is too difficult or too late to parry safely.
- Stay oriented toward the attacker instead of immediately retreating.
- Counterattack as soon as the block has absorbed the strike and the opponent is vulnerable.
- Stop after the recovery hit if another enemy is active or your stamina is low.
Delaying the counter forfeits the recovery opportunity and leaves you paying the health cost without the compensating benefit. Blocking is therefore useful in emergencies, but repeated passive blocking steadily erodes your margin for error.
How stamina should govern your decisions
The game’s gameplay materials identify stamina management as a central system. They do not provide a complete authoritative table of exact attack costs, dodge costs or regeneration values, so any guide that promises a precise number of swings or rolls is overstating what is established. Use stamina as a pacing resource instead.
Keep a defensive reserve
Before attacking, ask whether you can still parry or dodge the next likely strike. If the answer is no, the attack string is too expensive even if the first hit would connect.
Spend the shortest amount that wins the exchange
After a parry or a whiff, choose the smallest punish that advances posture or confirms a weak-point opportunity. Extra hits are only valuable if they do not carry you into an enemy recovery or empty your reserve.
Replace panic movement with a reset
When a dodge misses its intended position, do not automatically chain more dodges. One additional dash may be necessary; three or four usually turns a recoverable mistake into an empty bar. Move to a safe angle, stop attacking and wait for stamina to return through normal play.
A low-stamina protocol
- Cancel the plan to start another attack string.
- Use distance and terrain to prevent immediate contact.
- Watch the opponent’s next attack rather than trying to force a hit.
- Parry a clear strike or dodge an unblockable one.
- Resume offense only when you have both a confirmed opening and enough reserve to defend afterward.
Independent 2026 review coverage describes stamina as limited and notes that enemies can defeat the player in only a few hits. That combination makes measured pacing more reliable than trading damage or relying on repeated evasive movement.

Posture is the meter that turns disciplined defense into decisive damage. Attacks and timed parries fill it. When the meter breaks, the enemy enters the finisher state, but the opportunity still depends on your position.

The posture sequence
- Read the incoming attack and choose parry, dodge or emergency block.
- Use timed parries and controlled attacks to add posture damage.
- Watch the posture bar instead of assuming the next hit will break it.
- As the bar nears its limit, stay close enough that a light attack can reach the target.
- When posture breaks, press the light-attack finisher immediately while you are in range.
Why distance wastes a break
A common failure is winning the defensive exchange, then backing away just as the posture bar breaks. The finisher is a light attack on a broken enemy, and the official combat page warns that reach matters. Keep a modest distance during the buildup rather than circling far away. If you are already out of range, close the gap with a direct movement instead of spending the opening on a long approach.
Managing multiple enemies during a break
Do not chase a finisher into another attacker’s line. If the broken target is reachable without exposing yourself, take it. If a second enemy is about to strike, reposition first and return for the finisher only if the opening remains. Preserving survival is more important than forcing a cinematic animation.
Weak points, firearms and powers
The melee weapon breaks posture, while firearms can target weak points. The official tips connect weak-point hits to nephtoglobin refills, and enemy kills can provide ammunition. This makes ranged attacks part of the resource loop rather than a substitute for learning melee timing.
When to use a firearm
- A weak point is clearly exposed and the shot will advance the fight.
- You need to create a specific opening before re-entering melee range.
- The target is dangerous to approach immediately, while ammunition is available for a high-value shot.
The combat page describes pistol ammunition as scarce and firearms as a punctuating tool. Do not fire at every ordinary enemy simply because the weapon is equipped. Save shots for weak points or moments where the resulting opening justifies the ammunition.
How powers fit the loop
The game supports dual-wielded swords, firearms and magic, with a left-hand firearm or power slot described in the combat materials. Layer these tools around a melee plan: use a power or shot to create a controlled entry, then return to parries and posture damage. Do not assume every weapon or power has identical stamina behavior; their exact costs and timing depend on the individual ability.
Resource-aware ranged play
Because weak-point hits can refill nephtoglobin and kills can yield ammunition, a well-placed shot may improve your next exchange. Fire only when the target and resource return are clear. A random shot that misses a weak point spends a scarce resource without solving the immediate defensive problem.
Parry, dodge or block: a practical comparison
| Option | Best answer to | Primary cost | Reward | Main risk | Positioning concern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Timed parry | Readable, parryable attacks | Timing precision and defensive stamina | Posture damage and a possible stagger | Early or late input leaves you exposed | Keeps you near the target for follow-up, but another enemy may punish that proximity |
| Dodge or dash | Unblockable, awkward or unsafe attacks | Stamina and the space needed to move | Safety; a perfect dodge briefly slows time | Missing the line can leave you in a second attack | You may end outside finisher range |
| Block | Emergency defense when a parry is unreliable | A little health | A prompt counterattack restores the health lost while blocking | Passive blocking pays the health cost without the recovery | Stay oriented and close enough to counter promptly |
| Firearm or power | Exposed weak points or a deliberate opening | Often ammunition or ability availability; exact stamina behavior varies | Weak-point progress, nephtoglobin interaction or controlled space | Wasted resources if fired without a clear target | Ranged use can delay your return to melee posture pressure |
A decision tree for every exchange
- Readable melee strike: attempt a timed parry.
- Unblockable or clearly unsafe strike: dodge or dash.
- Enemy has just missed: take a short punish instead of an automatic full combo.
- Posture is nearly broken: prioritize safe hits and remain close.
- Posture is broken: use the light-attack finisher while in range.
- You blocked a hit: counter promptly to recover the health cost.
- Stamina is low: stop attacking, create space and wait for the next safe beat.
- A weak point is exposed: use a firearm if the shot materially advances the fight and ammunition permits.
Why you keep getting hit after attacking
You start offense before the enemy commits
Being inside weapon range is not the same as having an opening. Wait for a whiff, stagger or weak-point exposure before starting a swing.
You expect to parry out of recovery
Attack animations cannot be canceled into a parry. If you swing while the opponent is still active, you must survive the entire animation without that emergency option.

You spend the reserve on a longer string
Even a successful first hit can be a bad trade if the remaining stamina cannot support the next dodge or parry. End the punish early and reset.
You dodge the wrong attack
Dodging a normal, readable strike may move you into another attacker’s path or outside finisher range. Reserve movement for unblockables, uncertain timing and genuinely unsafe lines.
You win posture but lose the finisher
Backing away during the buildup creates a distance problem at the exact moment the enemy breaks. Maintain usable range and watch the posture meter.

Single-attacker parry drill
- Enter an encounter with one active melee opponent whenever possible.
- Do not attack for the first few exchanges.
- Identify the visual and audio contact beat for one attack.
- Parry only that move until the timing feels repeatable.
- Add one short punish, then return to observation.
Unblockable recognition drill
- Watch for the attack’s unblockable presentation.
- Ignore the urge to test a parry against it.
- Use one dash to clear the line.
- During any perfect-dodge slow motion, choose a flank, a short punish or a safe reset.
Stamina-budget drill
- Begin each exchange with a visible reserve.
- Allow yourself only one short attack sequence after a parry or whiff.
- Stop before the bar is empty.
- Defend the next attack without panic movement.
- Increase the punish length only when the shorter version is consistently safe.
Finisher-distance drill
Build posture while deliberately staying within light-attack reach. When the break occurs, trigger the finisher immediately. Repeat until proximity becomes part of your posture habit rather than a decision made after the meter has already broken.
Availability and version context
This guide reflects the combat rules and official tips available as of October 19, 2026. Valor Mortis is documented for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; Xbox materials also list Xbox on PC, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud availability. Storefront catalogs, regional editions and balance updates can change, so check the platform listing for your region before assuming a feature or edition is available.
The game launched on October 13, 2026. The combat principles here do not depend on a particular purchase edition, but patches can alter enemy behavior or resource tuning. If a future update changes stamina costs or attack cues, use the current in-game presentation and patch notes rather than relying on an unverified frame count.
The fight-by-fight routine
Enter every encounter with a reserve, not an opening combo. Watch until the enemy commits. Parry the readable strike, dodge the unblockable one, and block only when the alternative is a likely hit. After a successful defense, take the shortest punish that builds posture or exploits a weak point. Keep your position close enough to finish a posture break, but not so close that another attacker can interrupt you. If stamina drops too low, stop attacking and reset the distance. This rhythm turns defense, resources and finishers into one coherent combat plan.
