Machine-learning music tools generate either symbolic musical material—such as note events represented in MIDI—or rendered audio. Choose audio generation for a quick listenable sketch; choose a symbolic workflow when you need to edit notes or shape a performance. The distinction matters: the output format determines what you can change easily, while the model and its controls determine how much influence you have over the result.

What “generating music” can mean

Music-generation systems do not all produce the same kind of output. A symbolic system works with musical events, often represented as MIDI or in a piano roll. An audio-generation system produces sound directly. Some products may combine stages, so these are useful workflow distinctions rather than mutually exclusive categories.

Workflow Typical output What it suits Trade-off
Symbolic generation Note-like events, often MIDI Editing pitches, timing, and musical parts in compatible software; auditioning or performing the material It is a musical representation, not necessarily a finished audio recording. The listening result depends on how it is rendered or performed.
Direct audio generation Rendered sound Getting a listenable sketch or song from a prompt or other supported input Changing individual notes or parts may be less direct than editing symbolic events; the available controls depend on the specific tool.

This representation-based distinction is central to the design choices described in Deep Learning Techniques for Music Generation — A Survey (2017). It is more useful than treating “AI music” as one format or one capability.

How a machine-learning system creates music

At a high level, a model learns patterns from music data and generates new material under some form of conditioning. Depending on the system, that condition might be a text description, a melody, or existing musical material to continue or transform. The prompt or input steers the output, but does not by itself guarantee exact control over every note, instrument, or structural choice.

MusicGen as a concrete example

MusicGen illustrates one approach to direct audio generation. In “Simple and Controllable Music Generation” (2023), the authors describe a single language model operating over several streams of compressed, discrete music tokens. The system can be conditioned on text descriptions or melodic features. The paper reports automatic and human evaluation against the baselines it tested; that is evidence about those comparisons, not proof that MusicGen is the best system for every purpose.

Do not assume every product uses MusicGen’s design. The 2017 survey treats representation, encoding, model family, and generation strategy as distinct design decisions, and the methods used by a particular service may differ.

Choose a workflow for the job

  1. Decide what you need to receive. If the goal is a quick listenable idea, start with a tool that generates audio. If you need to change pitches or shape parts note by note, look for a symbolic or MIDI-oriented workflow.
  2. Check what the tool accepts. Determine whether it can use text, a melody, symbolic notes, or audio as input. A feature available in one model should not be assumed to exist in another.
  3. Check what you can control. Look for controls relevant to your task, such as continuing or transforming supplied material, and assess whether the output lets you work on the arrangement at the level you need.
  4. Listen or inspect before building on the result. For audio, evaluate the rendered sound and whether it holds together for your intended use. For symbolic output, inspect the note events and audition them in compatible software.
  5. Confirm practical and rights constraints. Consider generation time, computing demands, consistency across longer or multiple tracks, training-data disclosure, and the terms that apply to your planned use.

A MIDI keyboard controller can be useful if you want to perform or audition symbolic material, but it is optional. It is not a prerequisite for prompt-to-audio generation.

How to assess control and quality

Try to judge a system on the task you actually have, not on a single showcase output. A tool that quickly produces an attractive short sketch may not offer the note-level editing or longer-form consistency another project requires.

  • Input and conditioning: Does it respond to the kind of text, melody, notes, or audio you can provide?
  • Output and editing: Do you receive editable musical events, rendered audio, or both? Can you revise the part that needs work?
  • Arrangement and continuation: Can you steer how material develops, and does it remain coherent over the length and number of tracks you need?
  • Vocals: Check the specific model’s documented vocal capability. MusicGen’s model card states, “The model is not able to generate realistic vocals.” That limitation belongs to MusicGen; it should not be generalized to every music-generation system.
  • Speed and compute: Consider whether the generation time and computing requirements fit your workflow, especially if you want interactive use.
  • Consistency: Listen across the whole output and across multiple parts, rather than judging only a short passage.
  • Disclosure and terms: Look for information about training data, ownership language, permitted uses, and any conditions that apply to your account or plan.

Quality is difficult to reduce to one score. The 2026 review Recent advances in music generation: methods, evaluation, and challenges notes that objective distributional measures do not fully capture creativity, pleasantness, or higher-level musical structure. A metric or demonstration therefore cannot settle whether a result works for your particular purpose.

Limitations reported for some generation methods

The same 2026 review discusses challenges for diffusion approaches; these should not be read as universal limitations of all music-generation systems.

Arturia MiniLab 3 Universal MIDI Controller, White
  • GO WITH YOUR FLOW: MiniLab 3 is an easy keyboard controller that adapts to your needs, your style and your workflow, so you can make music just the way you like it. It lets you control instruments, mute tracks, punch in your 8 pad drums, and adjust your 4 faders with a flow so fluid you’ll forget you had a mouse. Hook it up, discover fresh sounds, enjoy premium velocity-sensitive keys, and get hands-on with your music like never before!
  • Latency: Slow sampling and high latency can make real-time interaction difficult.
  • Computing demands: Training and inference can be computationally heavy.
  • Fine-grained alignment: A denoising objective does not by itself ensure precise alignment between musical elements.
  • Multiple-track consistency: Coordinating separate tracks may require additional structure or conditioning.

These are reasons to test the exact model and workflow you intend to use. They do not establish that every model has the same weakness or that a specific tool will fail in a particular project.

Check permissions separately from copyright

Before using generated music in a public or commercial project, check the service terms that applied when you created it, your jurisdiction’s law, and any relevant distributor policies. A service’s permission to use an output under its plan is not the same question as whether the output qualifies for copyright protection.

Service terms depend on the service and plan

Suno’s Help Center says that songs made under its Basic tier have different ownership and use terms from songs made while subscribed to Pro or Premier. Treat that as information about Suno’s terms, not a rule for other services. Check the current terms for the service and plan you used, including any conditions tied to when the song was made.

Copyright depends on jurisdiction and human contribution

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 summary on copyrightability says that AI assistance, or AI-generated material included in a larger human-generated work, does not automatically bar copyrightability. Protection depends on the human-authored expressive contribution. This is U.S. guidance, not a global legal rule. Suno’s separate copyright FAQ also cautions that copyright varies by jurisdiction and that wholly AI-generated music may not qualify for U.S. copyright protection when no human authored lyrics or music. For a consequential use, consult current guidance from the relevant copyright authority or a qualified lawyer.

What providers disclose about training data and provenance

Training-data descriptions are provider-specific. Suno’s 2026 California AB 2013 disclosure says its models use publicly available music files and related metadata accessible on third-party websites, with collection beginning in spring 2023. This is Suno’s disclosure about its own models; it does not establish the training sources of other services or independently verify every item used.

Suno also says it attaches Content Credentials to generated songs and provides a verification tool. That is a vendor claim about its own workflow, not a guarantee that provenance metadata will remain attached to every copy shared downstream.
