Use two connected layers rather than expecting one chatbot to do everything. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, JetBrains Rider, and Claude Code can edit Unreal C++ files such as .h, .cpp, and Build.cs. Blueprint graphs, materials, Niagara systems, levels, and selected actors are editor assets, so a text-only assistant cannot see or change them. For those tasks, connect an editor-side Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, such as Epic’s experimental Unreal MCP in Unreal Engine 5.8 or a third-party bridge for earlier versions.
The reliable 2026 workflow is therefore an IDE assistant for source code plus an MCP-connected agent for the live editor. Compile every generated Unreal class, review replication and asset changes, save and commit before long sessions, and keep a human approval step for anything that can mutate the project.
What can AI coding assistants actually do in Unreal Engine?
AI is effective when the Unreal task is represented as text. It is far less capable when the task exists only inside a binary asset or the running editor. Separating those cases prevents the most common setup mistake: asking a text-only assistant to edit a Blueprint graph it cannot access.
| Unreal work | Where it lives | Suitable assistant | Human check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classes, components, interfaces, delegates | .h and .cpp |
Copilot, Cursor, Rider AI Assistant, Claude Code, or another coding model | Compile and inspect UHT output |
| Module dependencies | Build.cs, .uproject, .uplugin |
IDE assistant with project context | Check module names and target platform assumptions |
| Blueprint event graphs and variables | Binary .uasset data in the editor |
Epic Unreal MCP or an editor plugin exposing graph tools | Open the graph, inspect pins, compile, and play a focused test |
| Materials, Niagara, PCG, Control Rig, Sequencer, UMG | Editor objects and asset packages | MCP-connected agent with the relevant toolset | Review the asset diff and viewport result |
| Levels and selected actors | Running editor state and map assets | MCP-connected agent | Save deliberately; verify transforms, references, and deletions |
The Model Context Protocol specification defines the JSON-RPC pattern used by these bridges. In Unreal, the server runs inside the editor and translates tool calls into operations on the game thread. Epic’s documentation says invocations run serially; clients should not overlap tool calls.

Which AI assistant is best for Unreal C++?
For source-only work, choose the assistant that fits your IDE and privacy requirements. None of these products automatically gains Blueprint awareness just because it can index an Unreal repository.
| Assistant | Strength in Unreal C++ | Live editor or Blueprint access | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio or Rider | Fast in-file completion and boilerplate such as properties, delegates, and constructors | None without an MCP bridge | Cross-module refactors are weaker than local edits |
| Cursor | Composer can edit an ability class, attribute set, and Build.cs together |
None without an MCP bridge | Set .cursorignore before the first indexing pass |
| JetBrains Rider AI Assistant | Rider’s Unreal indexing understands reflection macros and TObjectPtr; the AI is comparatively conservative |
None without an MCP bridge | It still cannot inspect a graph stored in a .uasset |
| Claude Code, ChatGPT, or Claude web | API explanations, design reviews, and larger snippets | Only when an MCP server is configured | Without MCP, responses are based on text you provide |
| Local models through Ollama or LM Studio | Useful for confidential code and offline drafting | Only through a separately installed bridge | A 32B coder model on one RTX 4090 is suitable for a single-file task, but not equivalent to a top cloud model on a 2,000-line refactor |
PlayForge’s 2026 comparison identifies Unreal Header Tool (UHT), GENERATED_BODY(), reflection macros, and smart pointer types such as TObjectPtr and TWeakObjectPtr as common failure points for generic C++ models. Retrieval quality and repository hygiene usually matter more than changing model brands.
How should I prepare an Unreal repository before using an AI assistant?
Prepare the project before the assistant builds an index. Generated output and caches add noise, consume context, and encourage edits that Unreal will overwrite.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Exclude generated and binary-heavy paths. Add
Intermediate/,Binaries/,Saved/,DerivedDataCache/, and every*.generated.hfile to the assistant’s ignore rules. Use the equivalent settings in Copilot, Cursor, Rider, or your local model client. - Write a project context file. Put a short
CONTEXT.mdat the repository root. State the exact engine version (for example, UE 5.6), target platforms, game and editor targets, custom modules, coding conventions, and whether a class is replicated. - Open the correct source root. Launch the IDE at the folder containing the
.uproject, not only atSource/. The assistant needs module and target context to suggest valid include paths. - Keep generated headers untouched. Never ask an agent to hand-edit a generated header. Change the reflected class, run the build, and let UHT regenerate output.
- Give the model a narrow first task. Ask for one component, one interface, or one
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable)wrapper. A small compile cycle exposes incorrect assumptions before they spread across modules.
These exclusions improve suggestion quality more than switching models in many projects because the model sees the code you maintain rather than stale build products.
How do I use an AI assistant safely for Unreal C++?
Use the assistant as a code drafter and reviewer, not as an authority on Unreal reflection or networking. A repeatable loop is more valuable than a long one-shot prompt.
1. Describe the contract
State the class type, owning module, engine version, lifecycle, thread assumptions, replication role, and the Blueprint API you want. For example: “Create an AActor component in the Gameplay module for UE 5.6. Expose ApplyDamage as BlueprintCallable, replicate current health, and do not access world state from a constructor.”
2. Ask for a patch-sized change
Request the header, implementation, and required Build.cs dependency separately or as a small patch. Ask the assistant to explain each include and reflection macro. This makes an accidental editor-only dependency easier to spot.

3. Compile immediately
Compile every AI-written UCLASS, USTRUCT, UENUM, replicated property, and RPC. UHT failures are among the most common Unreal-specific errors. Fix the first diagnostic before asking for another feature.
4. Review networking by hand
Pay particular attention to GetLifetimeReplicatedProps, authority checks, Server/Client/NetMulticast declarations, validation rules, and ownership. Models often produce plausible-looking replication code that compiles but has the wrong authority or lifetime behavior.
5. Let the IDE provide the second opinion
Rider or Visual Studio’s Unreal integration can catch missing generated includes, invalid reflection metadata, and module problems that a chat response will not. Keep those diagnostics visible while accepting suggestions.
How do I connect Claude Code to Unreal Engine 5.8?
Epic’s first-party path is Unreal MCP, an experimental editor plugin for UE 5.8. It exposes toolsets for actors, Blueprints, assets, materials, Niagara, Sequencer, UMG, gameplay systems, automation, screenshots, logs, and Python scripts.
Epic warns: “Learn to use this Experimental feature, but use caution when shipping with it.” The same documentation adds: “Keep in mind that many features are incomplete or missing. APIs and data formats are subject to change at any time as it matures.”
- Enable the plugins. In Unreal Editor, open Edit > Plugins, enable Unreal MCP and All Toolsets, then restart. The toolsets depend on Toolset Registry, which enables automatically.
- Start the server. In Edit > Editor Preferences > General > Model Context Protocol, enable Auto Start Server if you want it on every editor launch. Auto-start is off by default. The default endpoint is
http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp, and the advertised server name isunreal-mcp. - Use an on-demand command when preferred. Enter
ModelContextProtocol.StartServerin the Unreal console, or specify a port withModelContextProtocol.StartServer 8000. - Generate client configuration. Run
ModelContextProtocol.GenerateClientConfig ClaudeCode. Other accepted clients includeCursor,VSCode,Gemini,Codex, andAll. Unreal writes a.mcp.jsonfile at the project root. JSON configurations merge safely; Codex TOML output is write-once. - Launch the client from the project folder. Start Claude Code after the editor server is listening and from the directory that contains
.mcp.json. - Install Epic’s skill pack if you want its Unreal-specific workflows. In Claude Code, use
/plugin install unreal-engine-skills-for-claude-code@claude-plugins-official. If the marketplace is not present, first run/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-official. - Verify the connection with a read-only request. Ask, “List all actors in the current level,” or “What actors do I have selected?” Confirm the result in Unreal’s Output Log and verify that
/mcplistsunreal-mcp.
The generated configuration has this shape:
{"mcpServers":{"unreal-mcp":{"type":"http","url":"http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp"}}}
Epic’s server uses HTTP and Server-Sent Events, not stdio or WebSocket. Tool Search is enabled by default: tools/list initially returns the meta-tools list_toolsets, describe_toolset, and call_tool instead of hundreds of individual schemas. Disable Tool Search only when a client requires the full catalog.
Windows, macOS, and Linux notes
The Claude Code session hook works on macOS and Linux. On Windows, use Git for Windows (Git Bash) or WSL for the hook; plain PowerShell skips the hook, although MCP calls still work. If you use the optional Unreal Terminal plugin, set TERM=xterm-256color and change directory to the project root before running claude; installed editor builds may open the terminal in the engine installation directory instead.

When should I refresh or restart?
After adding a Python toolset, run ModelContextProtocol.RefreshTools. A new C++ UFUNCTION marked AICallable requires an editor restart; Live Coding updates existing function bodies but does not register a newly added function reliably.
How can an MCP-connected agent edit Blueprints?
Epic’s Blueprint toolset can create or edit graphs, add nodes, connect pins, manage variables, and compile. That is fundamentally different from asking Copilot or Cursor to edit a text file: the MCP server calls Unreal editor APIs against the live graph.
- Start with a read-only inventory. Ask the agent to list the current level’s actors or inspect a named Blueprint. This confirms project, map, and selection context before mutation.
- Describe the graph in editor terms. Name the Blueprint, event, function, variables, node classes, pin types, and desired execution order. Mention whether a node belongs in the construction script, event graph, or a function graph.
- Request one graph operation at a time. Have the agent add the nodes, connect pins, and create variables in separate calls. Epic’s editor calls run serially, so overlapping tool calls can create race conditions or stale references.
- Compile inside the editor. Ask the toolset to compile the Blueprint, then inspect compiler warnings and the graph visually. A successful tool response is not proof that gameplay behavior is correct.
- Save deliberately. Save the asset only after reviewing node placement, references, default values, and latent actions. Then inspect your version-control diff.
General-purpose, text-only assistants still require a human to wire a graph. PlayForge described that workflow in September 2026 as writing the C++ function, exposing it with UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable), and wiring the graph by hand. Epic’s MCP and third-party bridges provide an editor-side alternative, but no independent benchmark establishes their Blueprint compile or success rate. Claims that an agent can build a graph are vendor capabilities, not a measured reliability percentage.
Which Unreal editor bridge should I use on UE 5.5–5.7 or non-Windows systems?
If you are not on UE 5.8, or you want a different tool surface, an editor plugin can provide MCP access independently of Epic’s server. Compare version coverage, operating system, authentication, consent controls, and whether the plugin changes assets directly.

EngineWire’s latest listed release is v0.6.0 from 27 October 2026. Its Fab prebuild can be installed by a Blueprint-only project; compiling a source build requires a C++ project. CodeFizz’s macOS and Linux support was listed as roadmap work rather than shipping support in this comparison.

Not by themselves. Cursor and Copilot can generate the C++ function that a Blueprint calls, but their repository index does not decode a .uasset event graph into editable nodes. Add an MCP editor bridge if you want the agent to inspect or mutate that graph.
A practical combination is Cursor or Copilot for a fast C++ edit, followed by Epic Unreal MCP or another bridge for graph wiring and compilation. You do not need to replace your IDE assistant when you add MCP; the two layers solve different problems. For example, ask Cursor to add:

Then use the editor-connected agent to place the node in the correct Blueprint, connect its execution and data pins, set defaults, compile, and save. If you do not have an editor bridge, perform the final graph wiring manually.
How do I secure an Unreal MCP connection?
Treat MCP as live editor access, not as a harmless autocomplete service. Epic’s Claude Code plugin README states: “Installing this plugin gives Claude broad, live access to the running Unreal Editor. Treat that access the same way you would treat running arbitrary code from an assistant, because in practice it is.”
- Save and commit first. Create a commit or Perforce shelf before an agent session so you can revert asset moves, deletions, and property changes.
- Keep the endpoint on loopback. Epic’s server binds to
127.0.0.1and has no authentication layer. It validates browser origins but does not prevent another process running as your user from connecting. - Do not expose port 8000. Epic’s warning is explicit: “Localhost is not a trust boundary. The MCP server binds to
localhost:8000with origin validation. Origin validation protects against a browser tab talking to the server, but any process running as the same user on the same machine can connect. Do not run the MCP server on shared or untrusted machines, and do not expose the port outside the loopback interface.” - Keep approvals enabled. Do not use Claude Code’s
--dangerously-skip-permissions. Epic explains: “–dangerously-skip-permissions removes the per-tool approval gate. In that mode Claude can drive the editor and run Python throughexecute_tool_scriptwith no further consent.” - Be especially cautious with Python.
ProgrammaticToolset.execute_tool_scriptcan run arbitrary Python in the editor with project access. Restrict prompts and review scripts before execution. - Use bridge-specific protections where available. EngineWire documents capability tokens, consent for 69 risky actions, path guards, and blocked quit or chained-console commands, but it remains a powerful local process.
For diagnostics, inspect the Unreal Output Log, enable LogModelContextProtocol Verbose, and use npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector against http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp over Streamable HTTP.

For an NDA-constrained team, a local model avoids sending source to a cloud provider but shifts cost to hardware and maintenance. PlayForge’s 2026 guidance puts a 32B coder model on a single RTX 4090 in the “acceptable for a single-file Unreal task” category, not the “matches a leading cloud model on a 2,000-line refactor” category.

The agent edits the wrong project
Close unrelated editor instances, launch the client from the intended project root, and begin with a read-only actor-list request. Third-party bridges that use a project name in the URL or a per-project token need the matching project identifier.
Blueprint nodes appear but the graph will not compile
Inspect pin types, execution order, promoted variables, and asset references in the editor. Ask for a smaller change, compile after each graph operation, and check whether a node belongs in the construction script or event graph. A tool call succeeding only proves that the editor accepted an operation; it does not prove gameplay correctness.
New custom tools do not appear
Python toolsets require ModelContextProtocol.RefreshTools. A newly added C++ UFUNCTION(meta = (AICallable)) generally needs an editor restart because Live Coding updates existing bodies but does not reliably register new functions.

What is the best 2026 setup for most Unreal teams?
Use an IDE assistant for C++ and an editor bridge only when the task crosses into assets or live editor state. On UE 5.8, start with Epic Unreal MCP and All Toolsets; on UE 5.5–5.7, select a bridge whose plugin and operating-system support match your project. Keep the source tree clean, use a short context file, smoke-test with read-only calls, compile all reflected code, review every Blueprint and asset diff, and keep permission prompts enabled.
The key distinction is where the AI works. As BlueprintsLab’s Roly put it, “The difference is not which model is smarter. It is where the AI works.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Unreal MCP run in a packaged or shipping game?
Epic’s editor Toolset Registry adapter is editor-only. A cooked or shipping build can start a server through IModelContextProtocolModule::StartServer(), but you must register tools explicitly, so this is a separate integration rather than a drop-in editor feature.
What happens to a Claude Code session when Unreal Editor restarts?
The optional unreal_mcp_proxy can keep the client session alive while the editor restarts. Cached tool names do not prove that calls are live; reconnect and run a read-only actor query after the editor is back.

No independent third-party benchmark of Blueprint compile or success rates was identified for this period. Tool counts and generation-time examples published by vendors describe capabilities or usage events, not controlled accuracy measurements.
Do I need an RTX 4090 to use AI with Unreal?
No. Cloud assistants work from an ordinary development machine, and an MCP server runs inside the editor. The RTX 4090 figure applies only to the cited example of running a 32B local coder model for confidential, single-file work.
