What you gain—and give up—with each phone
The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro share a 6.3-inch OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz. The screen size and refresh-rate headline therefore do not, by themselves, make the used Pro the better choice. The clearest model differences are the chip and rear-camera system.

This is the simpler choice when you do not have a specific use for the Pro’s extra rear camera or A19 Pro. The Pro’s higher-tier component names alone do not establish how much faster it will feel in your everyday use.

A used Pro is worth considering if its triple 48MP rear-camera system and A19 Pro chip suit your photography, video, or demanding workloads. The camera modules and chip are model-level advantages; they do not tell you whether an individual listing is in good condition or priced fairly.

Compare actual offers at the same storage capacity. Include the phone’s condition, battery reading, warranty, return window, and any likely battery-service cost. Current used prices and seller terms vary by location, condition, and date, so the available specifications do not support a single price threshold at which the Pro becomes the better deal.
How to check the used phone before buying
- Inspect Battery Health on the exact handset. Ask the seller to show its Battery Health information rather than relying on the original model’s advertised runtime.
- Read the capacity and performance information. Apple explains that maximum capacity measures the battery relative to when it was new. As a battery chemically ages, its maximum capacity can fall, leaving fewer hours between charges; peak-performance capability is also relevant.
- Review the whole offer. Match storage capacity, check the phone’s physical condition, and confirm the warranty, return window, and any refurbishment or parts disclosures.
- Account for possible service. If the battery may need service, include that cost when comparing the used Pro with a new iPhone 17.

Is certified refurbished different from ordinary used?
Yes. Apple says its refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell, and that Apple Certified Refurbished products include a one-year limited warranty. Those are terms of Apple’s program, not guarantees that apply to every used-phone listing.
