You can control a lamp remotely with MQTT Dash only if the lamp or a controller for it can receive MQTT commands, both ends connect to the same MQTT broker, and you provide a secure route to that broker from outside your home. MQTT Dash is the mobile dashboard in this setup—not a way to make an arbitrary Wi-Fi lamp MQTT-compatible. The app’s current screens and security options are not established here, so verify its current documentation before entering connection details.

What you need for remote MQTT lamp control

MQTT uses a publish/subscribe model over TCP/IP. The phone app publishes a command to a broker; a lamp, bridge, or controller subscribed to the relevant topic receives it and acts on it. The broker coordinates messages between clients. Home Assistant’s MQTT documentation explains broker configuration, while its MQTT light integration describes supported message schemas and command topics.

  • A controllable lamp: It must support MQTT itself, be connected through a bridge or Home Assistant integration that translates MQTT commands, or be controlled by a suitably configured DIY controller. A lamp being Wi-Fi-enabled does not establish that it accepts MQTT.
  • An MQTT broker: The phone and lamp-side client must connect to a common broker. The broker needs to be reachable by both clients.
  • Matching command details: The lamp-side client must subscribe to the topic that the app publishes to, and the command payload must match what that device or integration expects. There is no universal topic or payload for every lamp.
  • Secure remote access: When the phone is away from home, it needs a secure route to the broker or a remote-access intermediary.

Set up the lamp and broker before adding the app

1. Identify how your lamp accepts commands

Check the lamp, bridge, or controller’s documentation for MQTT support or an integration that can translate MQTT messages into lamp commands. If you use Home Assistant, consult the MQTT light integration’s supported schemas and configuration for the device. Use its documented command topic and payload; do not assume a topic name based on an example for different hardware.

2. Configure a broker

For a Home Assistant deployment, add the MQTT integration and provide the broker hostname or IP address, port, and credentials if required. Home Assistant recommends its Mosquitto broker app as a straightforward broker option in that setup and notes that it can create broker credentials during setup. The integration supports broker credentials, certificate validation, client certificates, and secure WebSockets when the broker supports them. Its documentation currently requires a broker that supports MQTT protocol version 5; it notes that most brokers, including the Mosquitto broker app, support it. Check the current integration documentation if your software version or broker differs.

3. Configure the lamp-side subscriber

Set up the device, bridge, or Home Assistant light configuration so it listens for the intended command topic and interprets the expected payload. If you want the dashboard to show whether the lamp is on, configure and verify state feedback separately; a command being published does not by itself establish that the lamp changed state.

4. Add the broker connection in MQTT Dash

Enter the same broker connection details in MQTT Dash only after confirming the app’s current instructions and security capabilities from an authoritative listing or documentation. The app-specific screen names, supported connection modes, and exact settings are not established here, so no menu path or port can be specified reliably.

5. Test locally first

While the phone is on the home network, send a command and confirm that it reaches the broker and the lamp-side client responds. If state feedback is configured, check that separately. Local testing helps distinguish a topic, payload, broker, or device configuration problem from a remote-network access problem.

Make the broker reachable securely from outside

Local operation does not automatically make the broker reachable over the internet. You need a remote route to the broker or an intermediary service. Home Assistant’s remote-access documentation describes Home Assistant Cloud, which provides a remote URL and encrypts traffic automatically without router port forwarding. Other approaches include TLS/SSL or a VPN or SSH tunnel; the appropriate option depends on your broker and network setup.

Do not assume that making a port publicly accessible is secure. Home Assistant cautions against exposing a port without securing the installation. Its security guidance recommends a strong, unique password for each account, multi-factor authentication, keeping the installation updated, and using a secure remote-access method.

When an ESP32 controller is an option

If the lamp has no MQTT support or suitable bridge, a DIY controller is one possible route. ESPHome documents MQTT client support for ESP32 and shows broker host, username, and password settings, as well as TLS-related certificate configuration. See the ESPHome MQTT documentation for the supported configuration.

An ESP32 development board alone is not a lamp controller: it needs appropriate firmware and switching hardware suited to the lamp. The cited documentation does not establish a particular board, relay, or lamp as compatible, and it does not provide a basis for mains-wiring instructions. Use hardware and installation guidance appropriate to the specific equipment and electrical safety requirements.

Choose the route that matches your setup

Route When it fits Remote-access consideration Extra physical hardware
MQTT-capable lamp or existing bridge The lamp or bridge already accepts MQTT, or an integration translates MQTT commands. The phone still needs a secure route to the broker when away from home. Not established; depends on the lamp and bridge.
Home Assistant with MQTT You want Home Assistant to connect to a broker and configure an MQTT light. Home Assistant Cloud avoids router port forwarding; TLS/SSL and VPN or SSH tunnel are other documented approaches. Not established; depends on the existing Home Assistant and lamp setup.
DIY ESPHome controller You are building a controller around ESP32 hardware and can configure firmware and suitable switching hardware. Configure broker access securely, including TLS where supported; remote access still needs a secure route. Yes: an ESP32 board plus appropriate firmware and lamp-suitable switching hardware.
