The simulator evaluates the selected model; it does not guarantee that every physical 741 will behave identically.
What the LM741 can—and cannot—do
The LM741 is a legacy single, bipolar-input, internally compensated general-purpose operational amplifier. It is commonly used with dual supplies such as ±12 V or ±15 V, is not rail-to-rail, and is rarely the best choice for a new 3.3 V, 5 V, low-power, precision or high-speed design. LM741, LM741A, LM741C, UA741 and second-source parts are not automatically specification-equivalent; use the exact variant and datasheet revision for a hardware design. See the TI LM741 product page and LM741 datasheet.
| Characteristic | What to expect | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gain-bandwidth product | Approximately 1 MHz typical | Typical product-listing value, not a fixed bandwidth for every circuit |
| Slew rate | Approximately 0.5 V/µs typical | Under the datasheet’s stated unity-gain test condition |
| Input offset voltage | Up to 3 mV maximum at 25°C for the standard LM741 listing | Grade, temperature and test conditions matter |
| Input and output range | Restricted common-mode range and output swing below the supply rails | Supply voltage and load determine the limits |
| Supply current | About 1.7 mA typical per amplifier | Datasheet typical value; the macromodel may represent it differently |
An ideal op amp assumes infinite open-loop gain, infinite input resistance, zero output resistance, infinite bandwidth and slew rate, and zero offset. The LM741 has none of these properties exactly. LTspice lets you see where the ideal assumptions stop being useful.

Every test circuit needs a ground node, correctly wired positive and negative supplies, an input source and a simulation directive. Begin with a simple circuit before adding a loaded or capacitive network.
First simulation: an ideal inverting amplifier
Use an idealized op-amp symbol or behavioral model only to validate the schematic and equation:
- Rin: 10 kΩ
- Rf: 100 kΩ
- Input:
SINE(0 100m 1k) - Expected gain: −10, or about 1 V peak from a 100 mV peak input
Add this directive:
.tran 0 10m 0 1u
The run lasts 10 ms and requests a maximum timestep of 1 µs. LTspice can take smaller adaptive steps; this is not a fixed-step guarantee. Plot the input and output, confirm 180° phase inversion, and verify that your source, feedback connection, ground and waveform selection are correct before troubleshooting an LM741 model.
Import an LM741 manufacturer macromodel
A generic op-amp symbol is only a graphical interface. It becomes an LM741 simulation when it is connected to an LM741-specific subcircuit. TI provides simulation-model support from its LM741 product page, but model files can use different subcircuit names, pin orders and syntax.
- Download and extract the manufacturer’s model file.
- Place the
.cir,.lib,.subor similar file in the project folder. - Open the text and locate the declaration, such as
.SUBCKT actual_name .... - Record the exact subcircuit name and every node in its declared order; do not guess the order from a familiar 741 pinout.
- Add
.include lm741_model.cirto the schematic. - Place a compatible symbol, such as a generic
opamp2, and set its value to the exact subcircuit name. - Verify that symbol pins map to the model nodes, including supplies and any offset-null pins.
- Run the simple test circuit and resolve model errors before building a complex design.
Analog Devices explains the distinction between primitive .MODEL devices and .SUBCKT macromodels, along with .LIB/.include workflows, in its third-party model import guide. For a usable subcircuit, you can open the file, right-click the .SUBCKT line, choose Create Symbol, save it, press P in the schematic and refresh the component browser. The documented workflow is described here.

Compare closed-loop gain, offset and saturation
Inverting configuration
Use ±15 V supplies, 10 kΩ input resistance, 100 kΩ feedback resistance and SINE(0 100m 1k). The ideal result is −10. With the LM741 model, plot the actual ratio, output offset, phase and clipping. Increase the input systematically:
.param VinPK=100m
V1 in 0 SINE(0 {VinPK} 1k)
.step param VinPK list 10m 100m 500m 1
As amplitude approaches the available output swing, the waveform clips rather than reaching ±15 V. A correct resistor equation cannot overcome output headroom or an already saturated DC operating point.
Non-inverting configuration
For Rg=10 kΩ and Rf=90 kΩ:
The output is in phase with the input, but output swing, slew rate and gain-bandwidth limits remain. The input common-mode voltage is different from the inverting circuit, so test it separately.

Operating point
Add .op to inspect DC input and output voltages, supply currents and bias currents. If the output is already at a limit, a transient plot may appear stuck or distorted before the signal begins.
Measure bandwidth with AC analysis
Set the source to V1 in 0 AC 1 and run:
.ac dec 100 1 10Meg
Plot V(out)/V(in), dB(V(out)/V(in)) and phase(V(out)/V(in)). AC analysis linearizes the circuit around its DC operating point, so it is the right tool for small-signal gain, phase and bandwidth—not clipping or slew-rate distortion.

Compare closed-loop gains of 1, 10 and 100. The approximate relationship is:
Higher closed-loop gain normally means less bandwidth. The exact corner depends on compensation, topology, load and the particular macromodel, so do not treat the approximately 1 MHz typical GBW listing as a guaranteed 1 MHz bandwidth in every circuit.

For a sine wave, the required peak slope is:
Slew limiting begins when that slope exceeds the available slew rate. Using 0.5 V/µs as an illustrative typical value and a 10 V peak output gives:
This is a calculation under stated assumptions, not a universal limit. Drive a gain-of-10 circuit with SINE(0 1 1k), then repeat at 5 kHz, 10 kHz and 20 kHz. A clean sine should become visibly slope-limited and eventually triangular. Unlike bandwidth, which attenuates and phase-shifts a small signal, slew rate limits the instantaneous voltage derivative of a large signal.
Expose offset and input bias current
Ground the input of a non-inverting amplifier with gain 11 and run .op. The output can be nonzero because of modeled input offset and bias-current effects. A first estimate for voltage-offset contribution is:

- The LM741 operational amplifiers which feature improved performance over industry standards like the LM709
- The LM741 features overload protection circuitry on the input and output. This prevents possible circuit damage to the device.
- The LM741 is designed so that there is no latch-up occurrence when the common-mode range is exceeded. This allows the device to function properly without having to power cycle the device.
- The LM741 is pin-to-pin direct replacements for the LM709C, LM201, MC1439, and LM748 in most applications. Direct replacement capabilities allows flexibility in design for replacing obsolete parts.
- Example Applications: AV Receivers, Embedded PCs, Netbooks, Video Broadcasting and Infrastructure: Scalable Platforms DVD Recorders and Players, Multichannel Video Transcoders, Pro Audio Mixers
Change resistor values and compare the result with the offset range in the datasheet. A macromodel may use a fixed representative offset; it does not predict the production value of a particular chip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo reveal bipolar-input bias current, compare source resistances of 1 kΩ, 100 kΩ and 1 MΩ. Larger resistance produces larger bias-current voltage errors. The LM741 is consequently a poor default for very high-impedance sources when compared with JFET- or CMOS-input amplifiers, although suitability depends on accuracy, temperature, bandwidth and allowable error.
Sweep common-mode voltage and output swing
Make a voltage follower, connect output to the inverting input, apply a DC source to the non-inverting input and run:
.dc V1 -15 15 10m
Observe where the output stops following the input. The failure can result from restricted input common-mode range, output headroom, or both. Repeat with 10 kΩ and 2 kΩ loads. Under ±15 V conditions, the datasheet describes approximately ±12 to ±14 V swing with a 10 kΩ load and lower swing with a 2 kΩ load, subject to device grade and test conditions. Heavier loading increases output current and reduces usable headroom. A low-current unclipped plot is not proof of output-drive capability.

Diagnose common LTspice failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown subcircuit | Missing include, wrong filename, compressed file, or symbol value not matching .SUBCKT |
Extract the file, use .include, and copy the exact declared name |
| Too few nodes or pin mismatch | Symbol and subcircuit pin orders differ; supply or offset-null pins are absent | Read the declaration, generate a symbol or edit mapping, and verify pins 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 plus any pins 1, 5 and 8 required by that model |
| No waveform | No ground, missing analysis command, zero source amplitude, wrong node selected, or run too short | Check wiring, source, directive, displayed node and simulation interval |
| Output stuck at a rail | Common-mode violation, excessive signal, bad feedback, missing negative rail, pin mapping error or saturated operating point | Run .op, reduce amplitude, verify feedback and supplies, then test a follower |
| AC result seems wrong | AC is small-signal linearization and cannot show clipping or slew limiting | Use transient analysis for large-signal behavior |
| Convergence failure | Unrealistic ideal-source/capacitor interaction, saturation or wiring/model problem | Start with a smaller signal, verify supplies and ground, run .op, add realistic series resistance and use a reasonable timestep |
Know what simulation does not prove
- A macromodel reproduces only the behavior represented by its equations; protection, overload recovery, phase reversal and parasitics may be absent or simplified.
- Physical devices vary with grade, production, temperature, supply voltage and load.
- Board layout, breadboard capacitance, supply decoupling and measurement equipment can change stability and noise.
- Typical datasheet values are not guaranteed limits unless explicitly identified as such.
- A successful simulation is evidence that the modeled circuit is internally consistent, not proof that hardware will work without measurement.
When a 741 is the wrong starting point
Choose a modern op amp when the design requires single-supply operation near ground, rail-to-rail input or output, low offset, very low input bias current, high speed, low power, or dependable operation from 3.3 V or 5 V. Select by supply range, common-mode and output range, gain and bandwidth, source impedance, load, offset, temperature and power—not by the word “741” alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ideal op-amp symbol simulate an LM741?
No. It becomes an LM741 simulation only when connected to an LM741-specific model or macromodel with the correct subcircuit name and pin mapping.
Why does AC analysis not show clipping?
AC analysis linearizes the circuit around its DC operating point. Use transient analysis to observe clipping, saturation and slew-rate distortion.
Can one LTspice run predict the offset of my physical LM741?
No. A macromodel may use a representative or fixed offset, while real devices vary by grade, temperature and production.
