Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger only if your exact computer supports charging through that USB-C port and the charger and cable meet its power requirements. Choose a barrel-plug charger when the computer requires that input and the adapter matches the computer’s documented electrical and connector specifications. Neither connector shape alone proves compatibility.
How to decide
Start with the computer, not the charger. Check the manual for the exact model and the output label on its original adapter. Confirm the charging input, required power, and any operating-state limitations before buying a replacement or spare.
- Identify the supported charging input. If considering USB-C PD, verify that the specific USB-C port accepts power; a USB-C-shaped port may not be a charging input. If the computer uses a barrel jack, confirm that its documentation specifies that adapter type.
- Match the power requirement. Check the required voltage, current or wattage against the charger’s output. For USB-C PD, the computer and source negotiate a supported power level, but the charger and cable still need to meet the computer’s requirements.
- Check how the computer will be used. Confirm the adapter can supply enough power while the computer is in the state you care about, including active use if applicable. A charging arrangement that works while the computer is off may not be sufficient for normal operation.
- Verify the cable and connector. Confirm the USB-C cable supports the required power, or, for a barrel adapter, verify both the exact tip and electrical output against the computer’s documentation.

What USB-C PD ratings do—and do not—tell you
USB-C PD is a negotiated power system: a compatible device requests a level supported by the power source. The USB-IF overview says PD 3.1 extended the specification’s capability up to 240 W. Its fixed-voltage examples include 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are specification capabilities, not a promise that a particular charger, cable, or computer supports those levels. USB-IF’s USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) overview describes the system and its capabilities.
So a label such as “100 W” is not enough on its own to establish that a charger will work with a computer. First confirm USB-C charging support on the exact model, then check the computer’s requirements and the charger’s and cable’s ratings.

Why model-specific requirements matter
USB-C ports can have different roles
A USB-C connector does not necessarily accept power. Lenovo’s guidance for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 states, “The USB Type-C connector is not designed as the primary power input port.” That warning applies to that model’s documented setup, not to every computer with USB-C. Power may depend on the computer’s state
Lenovo lists 20 V at 2.25 A for charging the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 in sleep, hibernation, or powered-off states; its guidance lists higher output combinations as capable of charging the computer. This is a single-model example, not a general laptop power threshold. When a universal barrel charger is appropriate
A universal barrel-plug charger is a reasonable option when the computer requires a barrel input and the charger’s specified output and selected tip match the exact model’s documentation. “Universal” describes the available adapter tips; it does not establish a universal electrical standard or guarantee fit for every computer.
Use the original adapter’s label and the computer manual as starting points. If the replacement documentation does not clearly confirm the required output and connector, do not assume a tip that physically fits is electrically compatible. USB-C-to-barrel cables are not automatic converters
A USB-C PD-to-barrel cable does not by itself make a barrel-powered computer USB-C-compatible. Consider one only if the computer manufacturer documents that arrangement for the exact model and the required output and connector are verified. Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every USB-C port charges the computer: check the exact model and port documentation.
- Assuming more watts always means faster charging: a higher-rated charger does not override the computer’s supported charging input and requirements.
- Assuming any universal tip fits: verify the selected connector and adapter output against the computer’s specifications.
- Assuming a trigger cable solves compatibility: use a USB-C-to-barrel arrangement only when the manufacturer documents a compatible setup.
Which should you choose?
Choose USB-C PD for a computer whose documentation confirms USB-C charging, using a charger and cable that satisfy its stated requirements. Choose a barrel-plug charger when the computer requires barrel power and the adapter is specified for that model. If the documentation does not establish compatibility, do not decide by connector shape, a “universal” label, or wattage alone.
