The available information therefore does not establish a complete set you can buy today for under $35. If you find the Activator or another set within budget, verify the exact paddle model’s current status on USA Pickleball’s Approved Paddle List before relying on an approval claim.
Is there a two-player set under $35 you can buy now?
Franklin describes its Activator starter set as containing two wooden paddles and X-40 balls, and says the paddles and balls are USA Pickleball approved. However, the Franklin set page currently marks the product out of stock, so it does not confirm a live purchase or delivered price under $35. Franklin’s Activator set page
Franklin’s separate green Activator paddle page lists one paddle at $14.99. That is an individual-paddle price, not proof of the price or availability of a two-player bundle. The page describes the paddle as seven-ply wood weighing 9.5–10.5 oz and says: “This paddle is approved for tournament play by USA Pickleball (USA Pickleball).” Franklin’s green Activator paddle page
Before buying, make sure the listing is for the same two-player set, check that it is in stock, and confirm the final delivered total is below $35. A retailer listing also describes a Franklin Activator set with two approved wooden paddles and two X-40 balls, but it does not establish current Amazon availability or price. How to verify that a paddle is approved
Approval is attached to the specific paddle model, not just a product category or the fact that a seller calls a set “approved.” For sanctioned match play, the 2025 USA Pickleball rulebook makes players responsible for confirming that their paddle is approved and listed as “Pass” on the official list. USA Pickleball 2025 Official Rulebook
- Open the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List.
- Search for the paddle brand and exact model name shown on the product or packaging. If an exact search returns no result, try the first few letters, as the list advises.
- Confirm the matching model is marked “Pass.” If the model is missing or has a different status, do not assume the set-level label establishes approval for sanctioned play.
Approval status can change. USA Pickleball says its Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR) testing measures the trampoline effect and is intended to limit excessive paddle response. Its December 27, 2024 update described paddles scheduled to be sunset and removed from certification for sanctioned tournament play starting July 1, 2025; the live compliance report records model-specific investigations and removals. Check the current list rather than relying only on an older listing or package claim. USA Pickleball paddle certification updates · USA Pickleball Paddle Compliance Report
