URL2PNG’s public Quickstart Guide documents two capture-timing controls, but it does not publish a timeout threshold, timeout-specific error code, retry policy, or guaranteed timeout fix. First establish whether the target site or one of its resources is slow; then use URL2PNG’s delay or say_cheese only when the page’s readiness behavior calls for it. Neither option is documented as extending URL2PNG’s service timeout.
First determine which part is timing out
A failed screenshot can reflect a slow target page, a slow or blocked resource, or a failure in the screenshot service or request. The available URL2PNG documentation does not define its error taxonomy, so record the exact error text and response rather than assigning it an undocumented code.
- Reproduce the failure and record the exact target URL, time, response status and body, and whether the same request fails consistently. Remove API credentials and tokens from any notes shared outside your team.
- Open the target URL directly in a browser and compare its behavior with the screenshot request. Note whether it is slow or incomplete in the browser too.
- Repeat the test. If useful, compare from another geography: a route or regional origin issue may not affect all locations equally.
- If the target loads promptly but URL2PNG repeatedly fails, preserve the generated request with credentials removed and the timestamps and response details for URL2PNG support.
URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide links to a status page, but the documentation alone does not establish whether a current incident is affecting your request.
Measure the target site and find the slow dependency
Use the browser’s Network panel or request timing instrumentation to separate DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS handshake, time to first byte (TTFB), and total request time. Compare repeat runs rather than treating one slow request as proof of a persistent problem. Cloudflare’s slow-website troubleshooting guide describes these timing stages and common sources of delay.

Check the page and its resources
- Look for slow origin responses and API calls. If the origin itself is slow, investigate the server, database, and caching behavior.
- Inspect large images and videos, third-party scripts, and render-blocking resources. A page can appear stalled while waiting for a dependency rather than its main HTML.
- For static assets, check whether caching is being bypassed or missed. Do not indiscriminately cache personalized HTML or API responses.
- Check whether the page is genuinely incomplete until client-side JavaScript runs. A browser-style capture may observe readiness at a different point than a simple document request.
Use URL2PNG timing options for readiness—not as timeout extensions
Once the target’s behavior is understood, choose the smallest documented capture adjustment that matches it. URL2PNG describes delay as a fixed wait after document readiness and asset loading; the guide gives delay=2 as an example and says it can be useful for things such as Flash animations. It does not state a maximum on the page consulted, nor does it say that the option increases a service timeout.
Use say_cheese=true when you control the page and can provide a reliable readiness marker: URL2PNG waits for <div id='url2png-cheese'></div> to be available. This can help capture content that appears after normal readiness. It is not a timeout bypass, and it is not applicable if you cannot add the marker to the target page.

Both settings address when a screenshot is taken, not how long URL2PNG will wait before failing. If the page is slow because its origin or a dependency is delayed, fix or isolate that cause rather than assuming a longer capture delay will help.
Reduce unnecessary capture work when appropriate
URL2PNG captures the viewport by default. Its fullpage=true option attempts to capture the entire document canvas; viewport sets the viewport dimensions. The guide lists a maximum viewport of 5000×5000 and a default of 1480×1037. If the use case does not require a full-page image or an unusually large viewport, request only the needed scope. This may reduce the work requested, but URL2PNG does not promise that a smaller capture resolves timeouts.

The unique parameter varies a request to force a fresh screenshot, while ttl controls screenshot-cache lifetime; the documented default TTL is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). These affect cache freshness, not a documented render-time limit. Avoid forcing a fresh capture when you do not need one, but do not treat cache settings as timeout controls.
Re-sign requests after changing signed parameters
URL2PNG’s v6 examples describe a request containing an API key, token, and URL-encoded target. The token is documented as an MD5 hash of the full query string plus the secret. If you change signed query parameters such as delay, say_cheese, or capture scope, regenerate the token according to URL2PNG’s instructions; reusing a token for a changed query can cause a request-authentication problem that is distinct from a slow-page timeout.

Keep other browser-service settings separate
Cloudflare Browser Run documents its own navigation wait behavior: its default domcontentloaded may occur before JavaScript finishes rendering, and its FAQ discusses networkidle0, networkidle2, selector waits, and increasing that product’s goToOptions.timeout up to 60 seconds. Its 422 responses can relate to timeouts, page errors, or memory use.
