Windows uses the Activation page to begin the edition upgrade; a reinstall is not part of Microsoft’s documented process.
Before you start
- Your current edition must be Windows 10 Home.
- Windows 10 Home must already show as activated in the Activation settings.
- The key must be a legitimate 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key. A Windows 10 Home key does not perform the edition upgrade.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Upgrading to Pro changes the edition, but it does not extend Windows 10’s support lifecycle.
Upgrade with an existing Windows 10 Pro key
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Confirm that the page identifies the edition as Windows 10 Home and reports that Windows is activated.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the valid 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key.
- Select Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft describes the Microsoft Store as the best way to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro, but the Activation page also supports entering a Pro key that you already own. The documented edition change uses the existing Windows installation rather than asking you to reinstall Windows.
If you do not have a product key
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Go to the Store.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the purchase.
- Complete the Microsoft Store purchase flow and follow the prompts.
- Restart when Windows prompts you to do so.
A Microsoft Store purchase may be delivered as a digital license associated with your Microsoft account instead of a separate activation code. Therefore, a confirmation email may not contain a new product key even though the Pro entitlement is attached to the account used for the purchase.

What Pro adds
Windows 10 Pro includes features aimed at business, administration, and security use cases. Microsoft lists:
- BitLocker Drive Encryption
- Remote Desktop
- Domain joining or Microsoft Entra ID joining
If you only need ordinary personal Windows features, the edition change may not provide a practical benefit. Pro is relevant when one of those security, remote-access, or organizational-management capabilities is required.

Can you use a free Windows 10 Pro key?
Microsoft does not publish a universal free consumer key that guarantees activation. The legitimate documented choices are to enter a valid Windows 10 Pro key you already own or purchase the upgrade through Microsoft Store. A generic key copied from an unofficial website should not be treated as a guaranteed activation method or proof of a valid license.

Home is not activated
The manual key-entry procedure is documented for an activated Windows 10 Home installation. Activate Home first, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and try Change product key again.

The key is for the wrong edition
Check that the key is specifically for Windows 10 Pro. A Home key cannot switch the edition to Pro, and an illegitimate or invalid key will not grant a Pro entitlement.
You bought Pro but cannot find a key
Check the Microsoft account used during the Store purchase. Store purchases can be account-linked digital licenses, so there may be no separate code to enter. Return to the Activation page while signed in to that account and use the Store or activation prompts shown there.

You expected a clean installation
This edition upgrade is performed from Activation settings. Microsoft’s documented flow does not require wiping the drive or reinstalling Windows; a Store purchase may require a restart to finish.
