VLC for Mac hides many of its most useful controls in menus, preferences and an optional toolbar. In the documented VLC 3.0 interface, you can expose recording controls, change playback speed, adjust audio and video effects, correct timing, style subtitles and configure screenshot storage without altering the original media file. Menu names and shortcut bindings can differ in later releases, so treat the paths below as VLC Desktop 3.0 guidance and verify them in your installed copy.
Start with VLC’s Mac menus
The Mac overview for VLC 3.0.8 provides the basic map:
- File: Open media, open a stream, and save playlists.
- Playback: Select chapters, change speed, and jump to a chapter or specific time.
- Audio: Choose an audio track, output device and channel mode; toggle visualizations; adjust volume or mute.
These menus solve different problems. Use Playback for where or how fast the media runs, and Audio for which sound track or output path you hear.
How do I show Advanced Controls in VLC for Mac?
- Open the View menu.
- Choose Advanced Controls.
- Look above the normal Playback Controls for the additional toolbar.
The toolbar includes Record. Click it once to begin recording and click it again to end, or stop playback. VLC saves recordings in its default music/video location unless you choose another folder.

Change the recording folder
- Open Preferences.
- Go to Input/Codecs.
- Under Files, select Browse for the recording directory.
- Choose a folder and click Save.

Use Preferences without getting lost
VLC Preferences has a simple mode for common options and an advanced mode for settings that require more familiarity. The documented sections are:
- Interface
- Audio
- Video
- Subtitles/OSD
- Input/Codecs
- Hotkeys
Before changing an unfamiliar advanced value, note its original setting so you can undo the change. If a configuration causes problems, use Tools > Preferences > Reset Preferences, then reopen VLC and configure only what you need.
Shape the sound and picture
Adjust sound with the equalizer and effects
VLC includes a 10-band graphical equalizer for changing the relative level of frequency ranges. It also documents a compressor, spatializer, stereo widener and pitch adjustment. Open the audio effects controls, move the bands or select an effect, and then make sure the equalizer’s Enable option is checked. Moving sliders alone does not activate it.

Use small changes and reset them if voices become harsh, bass overwhelms speech or the mix sounds unnatural. These are playback adjustments; they do not permanently edit the media file.
Apply video filters
VLC’s video filters can provide playback effects such as brightness adjustment, distortion and motion blur. They likewise affect how VLC renders the current playback rather than rewriting the source video.
How do I change playback speed in VLC on Mac?
Use Playback to choose a faster or slower rate, or use the documented desktop shortcuts:

The reference describes these as global shortcuts that can work when VLC is not focused. Bindings are version-sensitive on macOS, so check Preferences > Hotkeys if a key does nothing or behaves differently.

How do I fix audio out of sync in VLC?
Audio/video sync and subtitle sync are separate controls. For a delayed soundtrack, use the documented audio-timing commands or enter a numerical value in VLC’s synchronization controls. The VLC Desktop 3.0 guide lists K/J for audio timing. A positive value advances the timing; a negative value delays it. Adjust in small steps while watching a clear lip movement or other reference.
Use bookmarked timing positions
The same guide documents Shift+H and Shift+J for bookmarking audio and subtitle positions, and Shift+K for synchronizing the bookmarked positions. These are desktop reference bindings, not a guarantee for every Mac release; verify them in your Hotkeys preferences.
How do I sync subtitles in VLC?
Subtitle timing has its own controls, independent of audio timing. The documented VLC 3.0 shortcuts are H/G for shifting subtitle timing. You can also enter a numerical subtitle offset in the synchronization dialog: positive values advance subtitle timing and negative values delay it.
If the subtitle track is consistently early or late, apply one offset. If the error grows over the course of a film, the subtitle file may have a different frame rate or edit than the video; a single offset cannot correct that changing discrepancy.

Load and style subtitles
Choose an embedded or external track
VLC supports text subtitle formats including .srt, .sub, .ass, .ssa and .idx, along with other formats and embedded tracks in several containers and disc formats. Use the subtitle-track menu to select an available track, disable subtitles, or load an external subtitle file.
For a VobSub subtitle, select the .idx file rather than the accompanying .sub file.
Change font and encoding
For text-rendered subtitles, the Subtitles/OSD preferences provide font and size options. Restart the stream for those changes to take effect. DVD/SVCD and VobSub image subtitles do not provide the same font controls because they are rendered as images rather than ordinary text.
If characters are missing, garbled or incomplete, change the subtitle file encoding in Subtitles/OSD preferences and reload the stream.

After enabling View > Advanced Controls, click Record on the extra toolbar. Click Record again to finish, or stop playback. The destination is VLC’s default music/video folder unless you changed it through Preferences > Input/Codecs > Files > Browse.
Where does VLC save screenshots?
The documented Mac snapshot shortcut is Command+Alt+S. When the location has not been changed, the FAQ identifies the Pictures folder as the default destination. Check the Video preferences to change the snapshot directory or format. Because this shortcut and the FAQ wording are version-sensitive, verify the binding and path in your installed VLC copy.
