You can launch it with “Hey Google” or, on supported software, by holding the Side button. The exact screens depend on your model and software version.
Check your Galaxy device and software
Samsung lists Google Assistant support for Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 5.0 or higher. That broad compatibility statement does not mean every current Assistant or Gemini feature is available on every device. Samsung also cautions that “Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and phone model.”
The steps below are for Galaxy phones and tablets. Menu names can differ slightly between software builds.
Set Google as the default digital assistant
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app, then tap Digital assistant app again.
- Select Google.
These are Samsung’s documented settings steps. Selecting Google here sets the default provider; on software that offers a separate choice, you may also need to select the Google Assistant experience.

Select Google Assistant when the option is available
On devices that show this Google services menu, open Google services > All services > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant > Digital assistant from Google, then select Google Assistant. If the option is absent or the labels differ, your device’s software may expose a different Google assistant experience or menu.
Choose how to launch it
Use the Side button
On supported software, configure the button through Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press > Digital assistant. Open the digital assistant’s settings and choose Google. Holding the Side button can then launch the selected assistant.

Use “Hey Google”
Google’s voice wake phrase can be used where it is supported and configured. To set up voice recognition, go to your Google profile or Google services, open Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy > Voice Match > Set up, and follow the prompts. Voice Match is an optional configuration step, not a guarantee of any particular recognition result.
Know which Google assistant you have selected
Samsung’s current Galaxy help covers both Google Assistant and Gemini. They are distinct Google assistant experiences, and the available choice and features depend on the device and software. Check the product name shown in your settings rather than assuming that selecting Google as the default automatically enables every classic Google Assistant feature.

Bixby is Samsung’s assistant. Choosing Google as the default does not, by itself, establish that Bixby has been removed. Samsung says Bixby features and content can vary by region, language, model, and software.

A Galaxy Watch’s Google Assistant operates separately from the phone. Samsung says it can be installed through the watch’s Play Store, and some functions may require an LTE connection; phone setup does not configure the watch.

The phone instructions also do not enable Assistant on a Samsung TV. Google’s TV guidance applies only to some TVs and says that, as of May 1, 2025, Assistant is no longer available on TVs that do not use Android OS.
