The UniFi U7 Pro XGS makes the most sense when you need a WiFi 7 access point with a 10 GbE wired uplink and can provide PoE++. In a wired-backhaul setup, Ethernet carries the access point’s network traffic; a PoE++-capable switch port or injector supplies its power. Ubiquiti lists strong headline radio rates and capacity figures, but those are specifications and planning estimates—not independent speed or coverage test results.
What the U7 Pro XGS offers
Ubiquiti identifies the U7-Pro-XGS as a three-band, WiFi 7 access point with eight spatial streams. Its published radio arrangement is 2×2 at 2.4 GHz, 4×4 at 5 GHz, and 2×2 at 6 GHz. The access point has one 10 GbE RJ45 network port and supports ceiling or wall mounting; a Lite Mount is included. Dimensions are 215 mm in diameter by 32.5 mm thick. | Band | Streams | Ubiquiti-listed maximum data rate and channel width |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | 2×2 | 688 Mbps at 40 MHz |
| 5 GHz | 4×4 | 8.6 Gbps at 240 MHz |
| 6 GHz | 2×2 | 5.8 Gbps at 320 MHz |
These are manufacturer maximum radio rates under the listed channel widths, not expected speeds for one client or a guarantee of internet throughput. A client’s capabilities, signal conditions, channel configuration, and shared airtime all matter. The official store lists a US$299 base price and offers black and white versions; prices and availability can change by region and over time. How wired backhaul works—and what equipment you need
For wired backhaul, connect the AP’s Ethernet port to your wired network. That link provides the network path to the router and other network devices. Power is a separate requirement: Ubiquiti specifies PoE++, with maximum consumption of 29 W and supported input voltage of 42.5–57 V DC. An ordinary Ethernet port does not necessarily provide power, so confirm both the PoE standard and port capability before buying or connecting equipment. (Ubiquiti technical specifications)
#1 Best Overall
- Ubiquiti
- Choose a wired path. Connect the AP to a switch port or suitable injector on the network. The port must support the link speed you intend to use; it need not be 10 GbE for the AP to connect, but a slower negotiated link can constrain aggregate traffic.
- Provide PoE++ power. Use a switch port that meets the device’s PoE++ requirement or a compatible injector. Ubiquiti’s store lists a 10G PoE++ Adapter (60W) at US$39 on the page accessed October 7, 2026. That is a dated store listing, not proof that it is the only compatible power option. (Ubiquiti Store listing)
- Check controller compatibility. The specification page lists UniFi Network software version 9.0.114 or later for the white model and 9.1.120 or later for the black model. Check the current compatibility information for the exact model and color before purchase, since software requirements can change. (Ubiquiti technical specifications)
- Confirm local 6 GHz availability. Ubiquiti says 6 GHz operation is supported only in specified countries. Verify the current country list and rules for the installation location rather than assuming that band is available everywhere. (Ubiquiti Store listing)
The available product specifications do not establish real-world wired-backhaul throughput, latency, roaming behavior, or thermal performance. Those results depend on the particular network and client setup and should not be inferred from the 10 GbE port or advertised radio maxima.
How it compares with the U7 Pro XG and U7 Pro Max
The most useful differences are uplink speed, power requirements, radio configuration, and Ubiquiti’s stated capacity estimates—not an assumed speed advantage in everyday use. The figures below are manufacturer specifications and estimates, not independent measurements. | Model | Radio streams | Wired uplink | Power requirement | Ubiquiti-listed coverage and client capacity | Price in cited material |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| U7 Pro XGS | 8 total: 2×2 at 2.4 GHz, 4×4 at 5 GHz, 2×2 at 6 GHz | 10 GbE | PoE++; 29 W maximum | 160 m² (1,750 ft²); 500+ | US$299 base displayed price, Ubiquiti Store, accessed October 7, 2026 |
| U7 Pro XG | 6 total; band allocation and 22 W maximum consumption appear in its technical specifications | 10 GbE | PoE+ | 140 m²; 300+ | not stated in cited material (Ubiquiti comparison and technical specifications) |
| U7 Pro Max | 8 total | 2.5/1 GbE | PoE+ | 160 m²; 500+ | not stated in cited material (Ubiquiti comparison) |
Ubiquiti’s coverage and client-count figures are vendor planning estimates, not guarantees for a particular building or simultaneous workload. The U7 Pro XG is the closer alternative if you want a 10 GbE uplink but do not need the XGS’s eight-stream configuration and PoE++ requirement. The U7 Pro Max retains eight streams and the listed XGS coverage/client estimates while using PoE+ and a slower 2.5/1 GbE uplink. Whether either trade-off suits your network depends on the switch, power budget, and expected client load.
Who should consider the U7 Pro XGS?
It may fit if
- Your wired network benefits from a 10 GbE access-point uplink and the upstream switch path can make use of it.
- You can supply PoE++ at the installation point, or are prepared to use a suitable injector.
- You want the specified three-band WiFi 7 radio configuration and have compatible clients and a location where 6 GHz is permitted.
- Your deployment benefits from a high-capacity AP, while treating Ubiquiti’s 160 m² and 500+ figures as estimates for planning rather than promises.
Look closely at alternatives if
- Your switch provides PoE+ but not PoE++, and upgrading power delivery is undesirable.
- Your wired network’s AP port is limited to 2.5 GbE or 1 GbE and you do not need a 10 GbE uplink; the U7 Pro Max has a lower listed uplink rate and PoE+.
- You need a measured performance result for a specific building, client mix, or roaming setup. The published specifications alone cannot answer that; seek reproducible tests matching your conditions.
Verdict
The U7 Pro XGS is a requirements-driven choice: its defining combination is an eight-stream WiFi 7 radio, 10 GbE uplink, and PoE++ power. It is a sensible candidate when your wired infrastructure can support that combination. If PoE++ or 10 GbE would go unused, compare the U7 Pro XG and U7 Pro Max on their documented power and uplink differences before paying for the XGS. Ubiquiti’s specifications establish what the hardware is designed to provide, but not independent real-world performance.
