They are not replacing conventional data-center campuses. The current evidence describes a small but growing group of operating facilities whose success depends on geology, water control, electricity, fiber routes, access and the workload being served.
What “having a moment” means
Industry reporting in May 2026 characterized underground facilities as a “small but growing niche.” Most are adaptive-reuse projects in disused mines or hardened Cold War-era bunkers in North America and Northern Europe. They remain relatively few, but they are operationally established. This is interest in a specialized site type—not a mass migration of hyperscalers below ground.
Max Smolaks of Uptime Intelligence summarized the current position as: “There are not many of them, but generally they seem to be working quite well.” Examples reported in 2026 include Iron Mountain’s Boyers, Pennsylvania campus in a former limestone mine and Bahnhof’s Pionen facility in a former civil-defense bunker beneath Stockholm. Those facilities demonstrate different underground formats; neither establishes a universal design or service model.
Lefdal is the clearest current commercial marker
Lefdal Mine Datacenter in Norway illustrates how the concept is being scaled. In a March 11, 2026 announcement, 3i Infrastructure reported 37 MW of operational capacity and a further 43 MW contracted and under construction. The announcement described closed-loop seawater cooling, Norwegian power supply and six mine levels. At that time, only one level was being used for data-center capacity, leaving substantial physical space in the mine, although available capacity is not the same as instantly deployable IT power.

These are dated figures from an investor announcement, not live telemetry. They should not be treated as a benchmark for every underground site.
Why put computing infrastructure underground?
Physical protection
Rock, mine structures and bunker construction can create a hardened physical envelope and add protection against some severe-weather and external-threat scenarios. The degree of protection depends on the particular geology, structure, entrances, blast design, fire systems and security controls. Underground does not mean invulnerable.
More stable surroundings
Subsurface temperatures can be steadier than surface conditions, reducing exposure to daily weather swings. Nearby water may also enable a site-specific cooling design. Lefdal’s closed-loop seawater system is a concrete example, not a generic property of all mines or bunkers.
Reuse of an existing shell
A retired mine or bunker can supply tunnels, rooms and structural mass that would otherwise have to be excavated or built. Reuse can reduce surface land use and preserve an existing asset, but conversion still requires structural surveys, fire and life-safety work, environmental review, waterproofing, ventilation and modern electrical construction.

Potential fit for selected workloads
A remote underground campus may suit high-performance computing, archival storage or other workloads that can tolerate distance from users, provided fiber routes and customer requirements align. Latency-sensitive services may be a poorer fit. This is a site-selection inference, not a rule that underground facilities are inherently remote or slow.
How underground facilities stay cool
Cooling remains an engineered system, not an automatic benefit of being below ground. Operators must account for IT heat density, air movement, humidity, water chemistry, redundancy and maintenance access.
- Ambient-rock strategies: surrounding mass can moderate temperature, but it does not remove the need to reject heat.
- Water-based systems: nearby seawater or other water resources may support heat exchangers or closed loops. Availability, environmental permits, corrosion control and backup operation are site-specific.
- Mechanical cooling: chillers, pumps, fans and heat-rejection equipment still consume power and need service routes, drainage and spare capacity.
- Humidity and condensation control: damp mines require barriers, drainage, sensors, dehumidification and operating procedures that protect electronics.
A 2017 industry article repeated older Lefdal performance and construction-cost claims, including PUE comparisons. Those figures are historical and should not be used as current measured benchmarks.
Underground buildings are not the same as underground thermal storage
An underground data center places IT rooms and facility infrastructure below ground. Cold underground thermal energy storage (cold UTES) stores cooling potential in underground reservoirs or boreholes for later use. A surface data center can use cold UTES; the two ideas should not be conflated.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies, working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, Princeton and industrial advisers, reported a 2026 modeling study covering 12 data centers in Arizona and Virginia. It modeled cold-UTES scenarios rather than reporting savings from a commercial deployment.
For one Virginia scenario, the model indicated a 70% reduction in cooling-electricity cost, approximately $20 million per year for a 1-GW site. Other modeled scenarios estimated $90 million to $390 million in building-grid-infrastructure and fuel-cost reductions for a 1-GW reference hyperscaler. These are scenario outputs, not operating guarantees. The laboratory said the work is moving toward commercial-scale demonstration sites, so the technology remains promising and under development.
The same article cited an EPRI estimate that cooling can account for as much as 40% of annual energy consumption in computing facilities; the publication did not state the year of that EPRI figure.
The constraints that decide whether a mine works
Geology and structural condition
Old excavations may have unstable areas, load limits, abandoned shafts or complicated ownership boundaries. A structural shell that is adequate for storage may require extensive reinforcement before it can support modern racks, generators, cooling plant and cable systems.

Water ingress and humidity
Dampness, groundwater and flooding can threaten equipment and interrupt operations. Site plans need waterproofing, drainage, pumps, leak detection, humidity control and maintainable routes for replacing failed components.
Ventilation and fire safety
Long tunnels and enclosed rooms complicate fresh-air delivery, smoke control, evacuation, fire suppression and emergency response. Existing mine ventilation is not automatically suitable for high-density computing.
Power capacity and redundancy
Underground space has no value without dependable electricity. Developers must verify available grid capacity, substations, generator or other backup arrangements, fuel logistics, switchgear locations and the physical routes for high-voltage equipment.
Fiber, latency and customer access
Fiber diversity, route length and carrier availability can determine whether a site is practical. A secure mine with poor network paths may be unsuitable for latency-sensitive customers. Staff travel time and emergency access also matter.

Delivery, maintenance and expansion
Equipment may need to pass through narrow portals, shafts, ramps or elevators. Heavy transformers, chillers and racks can be difficult to install or replace. Expansion may be constrained by excavation, permits or the finite geometry of existing chambers, making growth less flexible than on a greenfield campus.

Compare a proposed site with a conventional campus using the same operational questions, rather than assuming the underground label is an advantage.
| Decision area | Questions to verify |
|---|---|
| Geology and security | What surveys establish structural stability, flood risk, entrances, fire separation and physical protection? |
| Cooling | What is the heat-rejection method, water dependency, redundancy and independently substantiated energy performance? |
| Power | What capacity is available now, how is it backed up, and where are substations, generators and fuel systems located? |
| Connectivity | How many physically diverse fiber routes exist, what latency do customers receive, and which carriers are present? |
| Construction and growth | Can racks, transformers and cooling equipment be delivered, serviced and expanded without major excavation? |
| People and compliance | How do staff, emergency crews and inspectors enter, and what environmental, mining and permitting obligations apply? |
Are underground data centers more secure?
They can be harder to reach and may benefit from rock or reinforced construction, but security is a system of controls rather than a consequence of depth. Entrances, ventilation openings, power yards, network points, visitor procedures, surveillance, fire protection and operational staffing still require protection. Ask for facility-specific threat, access and continuity evidence instead of treating “underground” as a security certification.
What the trend means for operators and customers
For operators, underground conversion is attractive when an existing structure, local power and cooling resource solve a real constraint. For customers, the useful question is not whether a facility is below ground, but whether it supplies resilient power, verifiable cooling performance, diverse connectivity, maintainable access and a credible expansion plan at the required latency and service level.
