Choose Uncharted if you want a cinematic, character-led treasure hunt driven by action set pieces and third-person combat. Choose Tomb Raider if Lara Croft, exploration, tombs, and puzzles are the draw—and you are willing to pick an era, because the series changes significantly across its history.

Uncharted puts the adventure first
Uncharted is built around a forward-moving, cinematic rhythm: characters trade banter, follow clues across striking locations, climb through dangerous spaces, and get pulled into escalating action. Combat is a regular part of the journey, especially third-person gunplay, but the appeal also comes from the company and spectacle along the way.

TIME’s 2016 review of Uncharted 4 drew a useful distinction: it characterized older Tomb Raider as a better fit for players who want to master jumps, while Uncharted favors set pieces, navigation, scenery, and third-person gunplay. Tomb Raider makes exploration a bigger part of its identity
Tomb Raider also mixes traversal and combat, but the promise of exploring ruins and uncovering tombs is especially prominent. Puzzles and exploration can be a larger part of the appeal than they are in Uncharted. The important qualification is that Tomb Raider is not one uniform style: its classic games, Legend-era entries, and Survivor-era reboot trilogy have distinct approaches.

Which Tomb Raider era should you start with?
Choose Tomb Raider (2013) for a grounded reboot
If you want a modern, filmic origin story about Lara becoming a survivor, start with Tomb Raider (2013). PlayStation’s retrospective describes it in those terms. It is a practical entry point for the Survivor-era take, but it does not represent the tone or design of the entire franchise.
Choose classic Tomb Raider for a different emphasis
If the main draw is navigating dangerous spaces, working out jumps, and exploring tombs, look toward the classic games rather than assuming the 2013 reboot is the definitive version. The series’ changing eras matter: a recommendation for one Tomb Raider game may not describe another.

Pick Legacy of Thieves Collection for two later adventures
For a current, clearly defined option, UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection bundles remastered single-player versions of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The collection is listed for PS5, and PlayStation’s page also references PC availability. These are later adventures, so characters and history carry over from earlier games; players who want the full character arc may prefer to begin earlier in the series where available. Tomb Raider: Catalyst is planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam; Amazon describes its setting as Northern India.
