If your aim feels inconsistent after switching to an ultra-lightweight mouse, first check that it is using the intended DPI stage and game profile. Then compare it with your previous mouse under the same game, settings, mousepad, and task. Change one thing at a time: a repeatable overshoot may justify a small sensitivity adjustment, while slipping or poor stopping points to grip, mouse feet, or the pad—not automatically to DPI.
Why can the same sensitivity feel different with a new mouse?
The number shown for DPI or CPI concerns how much movement the mouse reports for a given physical distance; weight and grip are separate variables. A lighter shell does not, by itself, show that the configured DPI changed. SteelSeries explains the DPI/CPI terminology in its DPI and CPI guide.
A new mouse can still feel different even when the displayed sensitivity is unchanged. Its active DPI stage, a DPI-shift button, or a game-specific profile may not be what you expect. The shell shape, grip, feet, and how the mouse glides on your surface can also change how easy it feels to start, guide, and stop a movement. Logitech documents default DPI, DPI shift, and per-game profiles for the G102 in its pointer-settings support article; the exact interface and controls vary by mouse and software.

Separate the movement the game registers from the physical feel of controlling the shell. If the same measured hand movement produces a different in-game turn, investigate settings first. If the turn is similar but the mouse slips, feels awkward to hold, or is harder to stop, focus on grip and glide.

That distinction helps avoid a common dead end: changing sensitivity to compensate for a grip or glide problem. A sensitivity adjustment changes how the game responds to reported movement; it will not make a shell fit your hand or repair worn feet. Conversely, buying a different pad will not correct an active profile that has switched to another DPI stage.
What should I record before changing anything?
Make a short baseline record so you can compare the old and new setups without guessing which change affected your aim. Keep the first comparison in the same game and task, on the same pad and with the same settings. SteelSeries recommends comparing a new mouse with unchanged settings in its aim-accuracy guidance. Writer Luke Siuty put it plainly in 2023: “When you get a new mouse, the most important step is to thoroughly test it out with the same settings.”
- Old and new mouse models, plus the active DPI/CPI stage on each.
- In-game hip-fire sensitivity and scoped sensitivity, if the game has separate settings.
- The active game profile and whether a DPI-shift button is mapped or easy to press accidentally.
- Polling rate, mousepad, and the task you will repeat, such as a short flick-to-target drill.
- Whether the issue is consistent overshooting, consistent undershooting, difficulty stopping, slipping, or unpredictable movement.
Do not change DPI, game sensitivity, pad, and grip together. If aim changes afterward, you will not know which adjustment mattered. Also note any settings you change during troubleshooting, so you can return to the baseline if the trial makes control worse.

Keep the conditions simple: use the same game mode or practice area, start from the same position, and repeat the same movement. If you switch between hip-fire and scoped aiming, treat those as separate tests when the game uses different sensitivities. A result in one mode does not automatically tell you what is happening in the other.
How do I check whether the new mouse is reporting a different movement?
Use a repeatable physical movement and compare the resulting turn in the same game. This is a practical check based on the meaning of DPI/CPI and same-settings comparison; it is not a laboratory calibration of the two mouse sensors.
- Choose a repeatable in-game starting point and a clear direction to turn.
- Move the old mouse a measured distance, note how far the view turns, then reset.
- Repeat with the new mouse using the same physical distance and the same game settings.
- Repeat the comparison enough to see whether the difference is consistent rather than judging a single movement.
- If the turn repeatedly differs, recheck the active DPI stage, profile, and game settings before adjusting aim technique.
If the turns are similar but the new mouse feels difficult to control, the likely issue is physical feel rather than a demonstrated sensitivity change. Compare grip, shell contact, feet, and pad separately.
For a useful comparison, pay attention to the pattern rather than trying to produce a perfect laboratory measurement. If you repeatedly cover the same physical distance and get a similar turn, the configured movement is behaving similarly in that test. If the turn changes from one repetition to another, check for an accidental button press, profile change, or other input-setting difference. If the turn is consistent but your hand overshoots the target, the issue may be repeatable control rather than a changed output distance.

It can help to run three kinds of short task: a flick to a fixed target, smooth tracking of a moving target, and an ordinary in-game turn. The flick makes stopping errors easier to notice; tracking can reveal inconsistent movement during continuous control; normal turns show whether the difference appears outside a drill. These are diagnostic comparisons, not a promise that a particular drill will identify every cause.
Why am I overshooting or undershooting with a lighter mouse?
A repeatable overshoot or undershoot can justify testing a modest sensitivity change, but mouse weight alone does not establish that sensitivity should go up or down. First confirm the active settings; then make one small adjustment and repeat the same task.
| What you notice | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The view turns farther or less far than before after the same measured movement. | Active DPI/CPI stage, accidental DPI shift, mouse profile, and in-game sensitivity. |
| Flicks consistently pass the target or stop short, while the active settings are confirmed. | Try one modest in-game sensitivity adjustment, then repeat the same flick task before changing anything else. |
| Flicks are sometimes fast and sometimes slow, or the feel changes suddenly. | Check DPI switching, game profiles, and acceleration settings rather than immediately changing sensitivity. |
| Turning distance is similar, but stopping or holding the mouse feels different. | Check grip, shell shape, feet, and surface glide separately. |
| Motion stutters when using a very high polling rate. | Try a lower report rate supported by the mouse while holding sensitivity fixed; very high polling can strain lower-end PCs, according to SteelSeries. |
Polling rate is the frequency of mouse reports, not a DPI multiplier. If motion is unpredictable, investigate the input path before prescribing more practice. On Windows, check whether Enhance pointer precision or another acceleration option is enabled in the active configuration. Its effect depends on the game’s input path, so do not assume that toggling it will fix every game.
Use the symptom to choose the next check. A stable, repeatable overshoot is different from a sudden jump in speed halfway through a match. The first may be worth a small sensitivity trial after settings are verified. The second is a reason to look for an active DPI shift, profile, or acceleration behavior. Making a large sensitivity change in response to erratic input may hide the symptom briefly without fixing what caused it.
For a sensitivity trial, leave DPI, profile, pad, and grip alone. Make a modest adjustment in the game, repeat the same task, and compare the result with your baseline. If the adjustment makes repeatable control worse, revert it rather than stacking another change on top. There is no single prescribed DPI, eDPI, or centimetres-per-360 value in this guidance that fits every player and game.
Should I lower my DPI or change in-game sensitivity?
Not automatically. Choose an adjustment based on repeatable movement and aim results after verifying the active DPI stage and profile—not on the fact that the new mouse is lighter. Do not assume every player should use lower DPI, and avoid treating one DPI, eDPI, or cm/360 value as correct for everyone.
If the same physical movement produces a similar turn but you consistently overshoot in a repeated task, make a small, single-variable in-game sensitivity trial. If the turn itself changes between mice, confirm the mouse and game settings before tuning. If speed varies unexpectedly within a task, look for a DPI shift, profile change, or acceleration setting rather than compensating with a large sensitivity change.

DPI/CPI and in-game sensitivity are separate controls in the chain: DPI/CPI describes the mouse’s reported movement per inch, while the game sensitivity setting affects how the game responds to that input. If you alter both at once, you cannot tell which adjustment mattered. Keep the existing values for the initial comparison, then choose one control only if your repeated tests point to it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCould the grip, mouse feet, or mousepad be the problem?
Yes. A different shell shape can change where your hand rests, and worn or different feet can alter glide. Keep your current pad for the baseline comparison; only compare another surface after you have isolated the mouse and settings.
If the shell slips
Check whether your grip remains relaxed and secure. Grip tape is a targeted option when the shell actually slips, but first check whether compatible tape was included with the mouse. ASUS lists anti-slip tape with its 54 g ROG Harpe Ace Aim Lab Edition; that is a model-specific example, not a universal accessory. See the ASUS product page for that model’s details.
Grip tape and a different mouse shape solve different problems. Tape may help with a slippery shell when the shape otherwise suits your hand; it is not a substitute for a shell that remains uncomfortable or unstable. Before searching for accessories, check the exact model’s box and compatibility details. Some manufacturers include grip tape, but bundle contents are product-specific.
If stopping or glide feels wrong
Inspect the mouse feet and pad for wear or damage. Check the box for compatible replacement skates before buying exact-model replacements. CORSAIR’s product listing, for example, describes included spare skates and grip tape on the Sabre V3 Pro; included accessories vary by product. Its product page gives the model-specific details.

SteelSeries lists different speed, balance, and control surfaces, including QcK Performance – Control, on its mousepad page.
Do not assume a control pad is automatically better for every player. Treat a pad change as a test of friction and stopping feel, not as a cure-all. The current pad is your control condition: if you replace it before comparing the new mouse, you have added another variable. If you later try a control cloth surface, compare it against the current one with the same mouse and settings.

| Option | When it makes sense | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the current pad | During the first comparison with the new mouse. | It helps keep the surface constant while you check settings and physical movement. |
| Try a control-oriented cloth pad | After the baseline, if glide or stopping still feels difficult. | Compare it as one change; a different pad does not guarantee better aim. |
| Add compatible grip tape | If the shell slips and the shape otherwise fits. | Check the box and compatibility for the exact mouse model first. |
| Replace mouse feet | If feet are worn or damaged, or a specific glide issue has been identified. | Check for included spares and exact-model compatibility; no skate material is a universal accuracy upgrade. |
| Choose another shape | If the shell remains uncomfortable or unstable after fair trials. | A shape change addresses persistent hand-fit trouble; it is different from treating slipping with tape. |
These options do not all require a purchase. Start with checks you can make using what you already own: confirm the settings, keep the old pad in place, examine the feet, and see whether your hand can hold the shell securely. Buy replacement tape or skates only if you have identified slipping, wear, damage, or a specific glide issue. A new mouse is a later fit decision, not an automatic upgrade to fix aim.
How should I check software, profiles, and polling rate?
Look for settings that can change the active input without an intentional sensitivity adjustment. Use the instructions for your mouse’s current software and firmware rather than treating legacy screenshots for another model as universal directions.
- Open the mouse’s current configuration software and confirm the active DPI/CPI stage.
- Check whether a DPI-shift button is assigned and whether your grip can press it unintentionally.
- Confirm that the intended profile is active for the game; check for a game-specific profile that may use different settings.
- Review the active Windows pointer configuration, including whether Enhance pointer precision or another acceleration option is enabled. Consider the game’s input path when evaluating its effect.
- If stutter coincides with a very high polling rate, test a lower supported rate without changing sensitivity. Compare the result in the same task.
Logitech’s G102 support page documents the concepts of default DPI, DPI shift, and per-game profiles, but menu names and locations depend on the mouse and its current software.
After a polling-rate test, restore the previous value if stutter does not improve or if the lower rate does not suit your setup. Keep sensitivity unchanged throughout that comparison. A report rate describes how often the mouse sends updates; it should not be treated as another way of changing DPI. If the game feels smooth and the measured turn is consistent, there is no reason to change polling rate merely because the mouse is new.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much should I practice before deciding the mouse is wrong?
Once the settings are stable, practice flicking and tracking at that setting and judge repeatable results rather than one match. SteelSeries writer Luke Siuty suggested 20–30 minutes of aiming practice daily in 2023; that is practice guidance, not a controlled estimate of how quickly someone adapts to an ultralight mouse.
No cited figure establishes how many days a player needs to adjust after a substantial weight change. If the shape still feels uncomfortable or unstable after fair trials with confirmed settings, choosing a mouse shape that fits your hand is reasonable; buying a newer or lighter model is not inherently the answer.

Does a lighter mouse guarantee better aim?
No. A 2023 study published in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics compared 16 professional male, right-handed players using 80 g and 87 g mice and found no statistically significant performance improvement attributable to the 7 g weight difference. The comparison involved a small group and short experimental exposure; it does not settle the effects of larger weight changes, different shapes, or every player’s transition. The study is available through the CDC Stacks PDF.
That finding is a reason not to treat weight as a universal predictor of aim, not proof that weight or shape can never matter. It also cannot establish an adaptation timetable for a heavier-to-ultralight switch. The comparison tested 80 g against 87 g, not every modern ultralight mouse or every player’s previous setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DPI the same thing as in-game sensitivity?
No: DPI/CPI describes the mouse’s reported movement per inch, while in-game sensitivity is a separate game setting that affects how the game responds to that input. Either can be configured differently, so check both when diagnosing a changed turn.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I use one mouse sensitivity setting in every game?
Not necessarily. Game-specific profiles can use different settings, and games may offer separate hip-fire or scoped sensitivity controls. Compare settings within the game you are troubleshooting rather than assuming one value carries across every title.
Why does the same sensitivity feel different with a new mouse?
The active DPI stage or game profile may differ, or the shell shape, grip, feet, and pad may change how the mouse feels to control. Compare a measured movement in the same game first; similar turn distance suggests a physical feel issue rather than a demonstrated sensitivity change.
Should I lower my DPI after switching to a lighter mouse?
Not automatically. A lighter shell does not by itself change configured DPI or prove that lower DPI is better. Verify the active stage and profile, then make a modest single-variable sensitivity trial only if repeated tests show consistent overshooting or undershooting.
Would a control pad help me stop more accurately?
It may be worth comparing if stopping or glide remains difficult after you have tested the new mouse on your existing pad. Keep the old pad as your baseline and change only the surface for the comparison; a control-oriented pad does not guarantee better aim.
Does a 7-gram mouse-weight study predict how long I will need to adjust?
No. The 2023 study compared 80 g and 87 g mice in a short experiment; it did not measure how many days players need to adapt after a large weight change. No cited figure establishes a universal adjustment period.
Should I buy new skates or grip tape to fix inconsistent aim?
Only after identifying a specific problem: tape may address a shell that slips, while replacement feet make sense if the stock feet are worn, damaged, or tied to a demonstrated glide issue. Check the exact model’s included accessories and compatibility before buying.
The Bottom Line
Start with the old settings, pad, and game conditions; verify the active DPI stage and profile; and compare repeatable movements before changing sensitivity. If turns match but the mouse slips or feels hard to stop, check fit, feet, and surface separately. Make one modest adjustment at a time, and consider a different shape only if fit remains uncomfortable after fair trials.
