The Ouroborous-3 produced 100 newtons of thrust in a July 2023 test, but it has not flown: the demonstration was of an engine on the ground, not a rocket reaching space.
How can a rocket eat itself?
An autophage rocket gradually consumes part of its own structure. In the Ouroborous-3 test, heat from combustion melted a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic fuselage. The molten plastic was fed into the combustion chamber and burned alongside gaseous oxygen and liquid propane.
“Self-eating” is therefore a description of how the engine uses its fuselage as an additional propellant source. It does not mean the entire vehicle disappears or that the plastic alone powers the engine. The UK Defence and Security Accelerator describes autophage rockets as using their fuselage as fuel on a continuous basis.
What did the Ouroborous-3 test demonstrate?
The University of Glasgow team fired the Ouroborous-3 at its MachLab in July 2023. The ground test produced 100 newtons of thrust, a figure reported by the UK Defence and Security Accelerator and the university in 2024.

- The engine sustained a stable burn.
- It demonstrated throttling, pulsed operation and restart control.
- Its plastic fuselage supplied a portion of the propellant, rather than serving only as inert structure.
These are engine-test results. They do not establish that a complete vehicle can launch, steer through ascent or deliver a payload to orbit.
How much of the rocket’s structure became propellant?
The reported percentages describe different quantities, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or added together.

| Measure | Reported result | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fuselage-derived propellant during steady operation | 5.1% to 15.7% of total propellant | University of Glasgow thesis, 2024 |
| Fuselage-derived propellant during pulsed operation | 0% to 18.6% of total propellant | University of Glasgow thesis, 2024 |
| Fuselage contribution in the university’s summary | Up to one-fifth of total propellant | University of Glasgow, 2024 |
| Typical conventional rocket structure | 5% to 12% of total mass | Patrick Harkness, University of Glasgow, 2024 |
The comparison is promising as an engineering concept, but it does not show that the same percentage of a future rocket’s mass could be converted into payload. Propellant share, structural mass and payload fraction have different denominators; a flight vehicle would also have to carry the systems needed to feed and control the engine.
Could this make small-satellite launches cheaper or reduce space junk?
The potential benefit is reducing the amount of structure a rocket must carry without using, or discard as a stage. If some fuselage mass can do useful propulsive work during ascent, a future design might devote more of its mass budget to payload or carry less dead structure. That is a design objective, not a demonstrated payload increase or cost reduction.

Likewise, consuming part of a vehicle’s structure could change what hardware remains after ascent, but the ground test does not establish how much debris a complete launch vehicle would leave. It is not evidence of zero space junk or zero environmental impact.
| Comparison point | Autophage approach | Conventional staged-rocket approach |
|---|---|---|
| Structure and payload | Aims to turn some fuselage mass into propellant; flight payload benefit remains unproven. | Structure and tanks contribute to vehicle mass; the university gives a typical structural share of 5% to 12% of total mass. |
| Propulsion control | Ouroborous-3 demonstrated stable burn, throttling, pulsing and restart on a ground engine. | The cited project sources do not provide a directly comparable control result for a conventional rocket. |
| Demonstrated scale and maturity | A 100-newton ground-engine test; scaling to flight-class thrust remains open. | The cited project sources do not specify a comparable conventional vehicle or thrust level. |
| Discarded hardware | Designed to consume some fuselage mass; debris outcomes for a flown vehicle are not established. | Staged rockets shed stages or carry structure that becomes dead mass; exact debris depends on vehicle and mission. |
Has the self-eating rocket actually flown?
No. Ouroborous-3 is a tested prototype engine, not a flying rocket. Its 100-newton result came from a MachLab ground firing; it was not an orbital launch or a payload-carrying flight.

The idea has a longer history: the concept dates to a 1938 proposal and patent, and Glasgow and Oles Honchar Dnipro National University achieved a controlled autophage firing milestone in 2018. Ouroborous-3 represents later work using more energetic liquid propellants and an unsupported fuselage configuration.
What comes next for Ouroborous-3?
The team says it is continuing development with UK Space Agency and STFC support, with work aimed at scaling toward flight-relevant thrust. It is also exploring industry partnerships in flight dynamics, control systems and materials science.
A University of Glasgow project page describes a possible sub-orbital demonstration in 2028. That date is a development target subject to further work, not a confirmed launch or a completed flight.
