Arnold Clark was hit by a ransomware attack on 23 December 2022. The company took IT systems offline and isolated its network, disrupting dealership services, vehicle deliveries, servicing and rentals. Its chief information officer later told the Scottish Parliament that sensitive customer and corporate or employee data was stolen, but Arnold Clark says it could not identify with certainty whose data—or which specific data—may have been accessed.
When was Arnold Clark hacked, and what happened?
Arnold Clark says the attack began on 23 December 2022. The company shut down IT systems, isolated its network, notified regulators and law enforcement, and brought in independent cybersecurity specialists, according to its security notice.
Chief information officer David Keenan described the incident to the Scottish Parliament as a ransomware attack. The Parliament’s report says attackers deliberately chose the Christmas period, when staffing was reduced, which lengthened detection and response time.
Taking systems offline was a containment measure, but it also prevented the company from operating normally for a period. In evidence given on 14 May 2025, Keenan said more than 4,000 customers had been expecting to use Arnold Clark’s services in the days immediately after the attack.

How many customers and services were affected?
The figures below come from the Scottish Parliament’s 2025 report, which quotes Keenan’s evidence on 14 May 2025. They describe customers whose immediate plans or services were affected; they are not a count of people whose personal data was confirmed exposed.

These operational figures should not be confused with the later court record concerning a proposed group action involving around 15,000 customers. That figure describes the customers represented in an application for proceedings, not a regulator-confirmed total of people whose data was accessed.
What data was stolen from Arnold Clark customers?
Arnold Clark says it could not determine with certainty whose data, or which specific data, may have been accessed. Its security notice says it contacted potentially affected customers and partnered with Experian to provide complimentary specialist tools, support and monitoring.

In evidence to the Scottish Parliament, Keenan said sensitive customer and corporate or employee data was stolen. Separately, a Court of Session opinion dated 16 April 2026 records an allegation that personal data was released to the dark web after the attack. That is part of the applicants’ case; the court record does not establish the exact data categories published or confirm a complete list of affected individuals.

What happened with the ICO investigation?
Arnold Clark says the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded its investigation on 12 April 2024 with no further action. The ICO’s public disclosure log confirms that it has an investigation record, but some information in that record is withheld. “No further action,” as reported by Arnold Clark, does not by itself establish that no data was accessed or that no customers were affected.

Can customers claim compensation?
A Court of Session opinion in Robert Adamson v Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd [2026] CSOH 39, dated 16 April 2026, records an application to bring group proceedings on behalf of around 15,000 customers. The proposed claim alleges loss and damage after personal data was released to the dark web. An application to bring group proceedings is not, by itself, a judgment that Arnold Clark is liable or that any individual is entitled to compensation.
The court record establishes that an application was made; it does not establish a compensation award, the outcome of the application, or each customer’s eligibility. Anyone considering a claim should check the current court status and obtain advice from a qualified solicitor. Be cautious of unsolicited messages promising guaranteed compensation or asking for sensitive information or an upfront fee.

What should you do if you may have been affected?
Check the original notification
If Arnold Clark contacted you, use the contact details in that communication or find the company’s contact information independently. Do not rely on unexpected links or phone numbers in messages claiming to be about the incident.

Use any support offered at the time
Arnold Clark said it partnered with Experian to offer complimentary specialist tools, support and monitoring to potentially affected customers. That was the company’s response to the incident; the notice does not establish that the offer remains available now. If you received an invitation, check its terms and expiry directly with the provider before enrolling or sharing information.
Watch for suspicious activity and contact attempts
- Be alert to unexpected emails, calls or texts that use personal details to appear credible. Verify requests through a channel you locate independently.
- Do not share passwords, one-time passcodes or full payment details in response to an unsolicited contact.
- If you reuse a password that may have been exposed, change it on other accounts too, starting with email and financial accounts, and use unique passwords going forward.
- Review relevant financial and online accounts for activity you do not recognize, and contact the institution through its official channel if anything looks suspicious.
Keep records if you are considering a claim
Retain Arnold Clark’s notification, any correspondence about monitoring, and records of specific losses or costs you believe resulted from the incident. These documents do not establish entitlement, but they may help a solicitor assess your circumstances.
