The UEFA Nations League is a formal competition: results count toward group standings and can affect promotion, relegation and knockout progression. An international friendly is outside those Nations League standings, even though it is still an official international match that can be scheduled during an international window.
How the two types of match differ

The distinction is about competition consequences, not whether a match is “real.” A friendly can still be useful for preparation or evaluation, but its score does not feed the Nations League table. UEFA regulations also provide for friendlies on national-team dates and allow for them to be moved or cancelled when necessary to reschedule a disrupted competition match. What is at stake in the Nations League?
In the league phase, a win earns three points, a draw earns one and a defeat earns none. Those points determine each group’s standings. For the 2026/27 edition, UEFA’s regulations set out four leagues and 14 groups. Leagues A, B and C each have four groups of four teams; League D has two groups of three or four teams. Teams play each group opponent home and away. In League A, the top two teams in each group enter two-legged quarter-finals, followed by single-match semi-finals, a third-place match and a final. Why UEFA introduced the competition
UEFA said the Nations League was intended to replace most friendlies with competitive matches and give national teams opponents of similar ranking. That describes UEFA’s aim; it does not guarantee that every pairing will be evenly matched or that every fan will find every fixture meaningful. Friendlies were not eliminated. Does the Nations League qualify teams for the EURO or World Cup?
The Nations League is linked to EURO and FIFA World Cup qualification, but the exact route depends on the tournament and edition. A Nations League result may matter to a qualification route; it does not mean that winning the competition automatically qualifies a team for every major tournament. How the format is expected to change
UEFA announced on 20 May 2026 a planned change to the men’s Nations League from 2028/29: three leagues of 18 teams, each divided into three groups of six, with teams playing six matches against five different opponents. UEFA said the concept would be refined and the detailed format submitted for final approval later. This is a future plan, not the 2026/27 format described above.
