Yes—an Ubuntu player can often join friends on Windows, but three separate conditions must line up: the game must run on Linux (natively or through Proton), its online services must work on Linux, and the Windows player must be using a compatible store and platform. A game that launches successfully is not automatically a game that supports cross-platform multiplayer.
For the least uncertainty, start with a title that has a native Linux build and have everyone use the same PC storefront. Then check the current Steam page and the publisher’s support information for cross-play, anti-cheat, and version restrictions before buying.
What “works on Ubuntu” actually means
Linux compatibility and multiplayer compatibility are different tests. Ubuntu’s Steam documentation describes Proton as “software developed by Valve that allows Windows games to run on Linux, and is used by the Steam Play client.” That gives you two installation routes:
- Native Linux: the developer ships a Linux build that Steam can install directly. Proton is not required.
- Proton: Steam runs the Windows build through Valve’s compatibility layer. The game may launch correctly, while a particular anti-cheat system, voice service, launcher, or multiplayer backend still fails.
There is also a third question: which network can your friend join? A Steam PC release may use a different multiplayer network from an Xbox or Microsoft Store release of the same game. Console cross-play can be narrower than PC cross-play, and a patch can change the situation after an otherwise successful setup.

Native-Linux games to put on your shortlist
The comparison guide identifies the following games as native Linux entries. A native build removes one layer of uncertainty, but it does not establish cross-play with every Windows edition. Before purchasing, confirm the current Windows storefront, multiplayer rules, and anti-cheat status on the game’s own store and support pages.
| Game | Ubuntu route | Check before inviting Windows players |
|---|---|---|
| Overcooked! 2 | Native Linux entry | Whether the Windows players’ storefront and edition use the same online service; check local or shared-screen input requirements if you are playing in one room. |
| Portal 2 | Native Linux entry | Whether the co-op mode you want is online, local, or suitable for Steam Remote Play Together on your current build. |
| Left 4 Dead 2 | Native Linux entry | Current multiplayer availability, server connectivity, and whether all players are using compatible PC releases. |
| Barotrauma | Native Linux entry | Current multiplayer and mod compatibility between the Linux and Windows installations. |
| Enlisted | Native Linux entry | Whether the supported Linux route and the Windows account or storefront can use the same matchmaking service. |
| Valheim | Native Linux entry | Version parity, server access, and any restrictions attached to the Windows player’s store. |
| Project Zomboid | Native Linux entry | That everyone is on the same game version and that mods, if used, are available to every player. |
| Core Keeper | Native Linux entry | Current cross-platform PC rules and whether a shared world can be joined from the Windows release your friends own. |
| Don’t Starve Together | Native Linux entry | Account, version, and storefront requirements before you create or join a server. |
This is a starting list, not a guarantee. The guide’s entries are editorial leads, and compatibility can change with patches, Proton versions, anti-cheat updates, or store policies.
How to choose among the native candidates
Use the type of session you want as the first filter. Overcooked! 2 and Portal 2 are natural fits for short, coordinated co-op sessions, but you should distinguish their online modes from local or shared-screen play. Left 4 Dead 2 is built around networked sessions, so server access and the exact PC release matter more than controller support. Barotrauma, Valheim, Project Zomboid, Core Keeper, and Don’t Starve Together are persistent or systems-heavy games where version and mod parity can determine whether a friend can join an existing world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnlisted deserves an especially careful storefront check because its matchmaking and account path must be the same for every player. For any title in this list, write down the exact store edition before buying. “Native Linux” tells you how the Ubuntu executable is supplied; it does not tell you which Windows network, account system, or console group it can reach.
Two platform rules that prevent common buying mistakes
Stardew Valley: PC multiplayer, not universal cross-play
The Stardew Valley Wiki documents multiplayer for 1–8 players across PC Linux, Mac, and Windows. It also describes cross-platform play as generally unavailable outside compatible PC versions. That makes it a strong candidate for a Linux-and-Windows PC group when everyone is using compatible PC releases, but it should not be advertised as a universal console cross-play game.
Deep Rock Galactic: Steam and Microsoft Store are separate groups
The developer’s official policy explicitly separates the Steam release from the Xbox/Microsoft Store cross-play group. A player on Steam therefore cannot simply join a friend using the Xbox or Microsoft Store version because the title is available on both PC ecosystems. Always identify the exact store before assuming “PC cross-play.”
Configure Steam and Proton on Ubuntu
Native Linux games do not need Proton. For a Windows-only Steam game, use Steam Play and then test the title before your group commits to it.

- Install and update Steam for Linux. Sign in to the account that owns the game and let Steam finish its client and library updates.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles. Open Steam’s settings, find the Steam Play or compatibility section, and enable the option for supported games.
- Enable Steam Play for other titles only when needed. Ubuntu’s guidance provides a separate setting for running other Windows titles. Turning it on exposes more games, but “launches” still does not mean “multiplayer works.”
- Choose a Proton tool per game when necessary. In your Library, open the game’s Properties, select Compatibility, and choose the Proton version you want Steam to use. Keep the setting specific to that game while you troubleshoot.
- Launch before scheduling a group session. Reach the main menu, sign in to any required service, and try the multiplayer or server browser. This separates an installation problem from a network or cross-play problem.
Ubuntu notes that unsupported titles vary in functionality and directs users to game-specific compatibility reports. Steam Support likewise distinguishes its Linux-supported list from Steam Play: the Linux list covers games downloadable by the Steam for Linux client, while Steam Play can potentially make some Windows-only games work. Do not interpret the Linux list as a complete list of every Proton-compatible game.
How to verify a game before you buy it
Use this sequence for every title, including a game that appears in a Linux recommendation list.
- Identify the release. Write down whether you and your friends will use Steam, another PC store, Xbox, or the Microsoft Store. Treat each as a separate platform until the publisher says otherwise.
- Confirm the Linux route. Look for a native Linux depot or a current Proton compatibility report. A native build avoids Proton-specific failures; a Proton title requires an additional multiplayer check.
- Read the multiplayer wording. Look specifically for “cross-play,” supported platforms, account requirements, and whether Linux is included. “Online co-op” by itself does not prove Windows-to-Linux play.
- Check anti-cheat and launchers. Anti-cheat, a separate launcher, or a required voice or account service can block multiplayer even when the game reaches its menu under Proton.
- Match versions. Have every player update before testing. Different patches, beta branches, mods, and server versions can prevent a join.
- Check the store page for local or Remote Play Together support. These are different from ordinary online cross-play and have different ownership requirements.
- Run a short group test. Create a lobby or server, invite one Windows player, and confirm that voice, joining, saving, and reconnecting all work before buying copies for the entire group.
Read platform and ownership labels precisely
Store language often compresses several different arrangements into one “PC” label. Before checkout, record four things: the storefront, the operating system, the account or launcher required, and the multiplayer network. Two people can both be on Windows yet be separated by Steam and Microsoft Store rules, as the Deep Rock Galactic policy demonstrates. Conversely, Linux and Windows players may be able to meet when their compatible PC releases use the same service, as the Stardew Valley PC arrangement suggests.
Also separate ownership from participation. Ordinary online co-op generally requires each participant to own a compatible copy, subject to the game’s own policy. Steam Remote Play Together is the notable exception for supported local co-op: the host runs the game and invites a friend who does not need to own or launch it. That feature does not transfer to every online mode, and it does not override a publisher’s platform restriction.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck downloadable content and mods as well. A shared world may require the same game version, and a modded session can fail when one player lacks a dependency or uses a different branch. If the store page is unclear, test an unmodded session first, then add modifications one at a time.
Native build, Proton, and cross-play: a practical decision framework
| Your situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the fewest Linux-specific variables | Native Linux game on the same PC storefront | There is no Proton layer to troubleshoot, although the game’s own multiplayer and store rules still apply. |
| The title has no Linux build | Steam Play with a documented Proton configuration | Proton may run the Windows build, but online services and anti-cheat require separate confirmation. |
| Friends own different PC releases | A title whose publisher explicitly lists those storefronts together | Store ownership and network groups can be separate even when the game name is identical. |
| You are sharing one screen | A game with local co-op and supported controllers | Local-player limits and input support matter more than online cross-play. |
| A friend does not own the game | Steam Remote Play Together, if the title supports it | The host streams a supported local co-op session; the invited friend does not need to own or launch the game. |
Remote Play Together is not ordinary online multiplayer
Steam Remote Play Together lets you invite friends into supported local co-op sessions. Steam says an invited friend can participate without owning or launching the game. The feature is title-specific: look for the Remote Play Together indication on the individual Steam store page, then check how many local players and controllers the game accepts.
This mode can be useful when a game has shared-screen or couch co-op but no native online lobby. It is not a way to bypass a title’s platform restrictions for its normal online mode, and streaming quality depends on the host and participants’ connections.

Controllers and local co-op on Ubuntu
A controller is an optional accessory for games with shared-screen play. It is not required for remote online multiplayer. Before buying one, verify three details on the game’s current page:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Whether local co-op is supported at all.
- How many local players can join the same session.
- Whether the game accepts your controller through Steam Input or requires a particular layout.
If everyone is playing from separate computers, prioritize the title’s online networking and cross-play rules instead of assuming a controller will solve a connection problem.
A short pre-game test that saves a group purchase
- Install the same release on one Ubuntu machine and one Windows machine.
- Update both clients and avoid beta branches while testing.
- Start without mods or optional launch parameters.
- Confirm that each player can reach the main menu and complete any required account sign-in.
- Create a lobby, invite the other player, and verify that joining succeeds.
- Play long enough to test voice or text chat, saving, reconnecting, and leaving the session.
- Only then decide whether the rest of the group should buy the same edition.
Keep notes about the store edition, game build, and Proton version. Those details make later troubleshooting much faster and help distinguish a game update from a local Ubuntu configuration problem.
Common failure modes and fixes
The game starts, but multiplayer will not connect
Recheck the exact storefront and platform list first. Then compare game versions, disable incompatible mods, and test the game’s multiplayer menu with a clean installation. A successful launch only proves that the executable runs; it does not prove that the online service accepts Linux clients.
One Windows friend can join, another cannot
Compare their store editions, account requirements, and patch branches. The Deep Rock Galactic Steam-versus-Microsoft-Store rule illustrates why two Windows players can still belong to different network groups.
Proton works until an update
Compatibility can change when the game, Proton, or anti-cheat component updates. Recheck the game-specific compatibility report, try the Proton version selected in the game’s Properties > Compatibility panel, and report the result separately for launching and for multiplayer. Do not promise the rest of the group that a previous configuration will remain valid.
A local session has no usable input
Confirm that the game actually supports local players, connect the controllers before launching, and review Steam Input or the game’s control settings. Remote Play Together can carry a local session to a remote friend, but it does not add local-player slots that the game does not provide.

The game reaches a launcher but not the lobby
Check whether the launcher, account service, or anti-cheat component has separate Linux requirements. If the title is running through Proton, test another documented Proton tool only after recording the original result. Treat launcher login, game launch, and multiplayer connection as three separate checkpoints.
Keeping a Linux-and-Windows group working over time
- Record the game’s store edition and the Proton version that worked for your group.
- Update all installations before changing mods or server settings.
- When a patch breaks play, test native launch, online login, and cross-platform joining as separate stages.
- Re-read the publisher’s current platform policy after major updates; anti-cheat and storefront support can change.
- Keep a native Linux alternative available if a Proton title is essential to your regular game night.
Cost and purchase checks
Prices, bundles, subscriptions, and platform availability change, so check the current store page on the day you buy. Compare the total ownership requirement rather than the headline price: every player may need the same PC edition, an account with the relevant service, and any required launcher. A cheaper edition on another storefront is not a bargain if it belongs to a separate multiplayer network.
For local co-op, factor in the number of controllers and local-player slots. A controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement for separate-computer online play. For Remote Play Together, verify that the individual title advertises the feature and confirm whether the host’s copy provides the complete local mode you intend to stream.
A reliable buying rule
Choose a native Linux title from the shortlist when your priority is a predictable Ubuntu installation, then verify the Windows players’ exact store before purchase. Choose a Proton title only after confirming both launch compatibility and multiplayer support. Treat Stardew Valley’s PC-only cross-platform allowance and Deep Rock Galactic’s Steam/Microsoft Store split as reminders that “Linux,” “Windows,” and “PC” are not complete compatibility labels by themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ubuntu and Windows players play the same PC game together?
Often, yes. The game must run on Ubuntu natively or through Proton, its multiplayer service must accept the Linux client, and both players must use compatible storefronts, accounts, versions, and platforms.
Is a Proton-compatible game automatically multiplayer-compatible?
No. Proton can make a Windows game launch while anti-cheat, launchers, voice services, or the multiplayer backend still fail. Test online joining separately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Can Steam players join friends using the Microsoft Store version of Deep Rock Galactic?
The developer separates the Steam release from the Xbox/Microsoft Store cross-play group. Confirm the exact edition before buying or inviting friends.
Do native Linux games need Proton?
No. A native Linux build runs directly through Steam. Proton is for Windows builds that Steam Play runs on Linux.
Can a friend play through Steam Remote Play Together without owning the game?
For a supported local co-op title, Steam says an invited friend can participate without owning or launching the game. Check the feature on that game’s store page; it does not apply automatically to ordinary online multiplayer.

Do I need a controller to play co-op on Ubuntu?
Only when the game’s local or shared-screen mode requires one. Controllers are optional for separate-computer online play, and you should verify local-player limits and input support first.
Why can one Windows friend join while another cannot?
They may own different storefront editions, use different account networks, have mismatched patches, or be on incompatible branches or mod sets. Compare those details before changing Proton settings.
The Bottom Line
Ubuntu and Windows friends can often share a game night, but “runs on Linux” is only the first check. Prefer a native Linux build on the same PC storefront, verify the publisher’s current cross-play and anti-cheat rules, and run a two-player test before the whole group buys copies.
