Ubisoft’s 2023 statement that it had not deleted accounts inactive for less than four years was a description of practice at that time—not a lasting guarantee.
What Ubisoft clarified—and what changed
In 2023, after concern about an inactivity email, Ubisoft said its account-deletion process was intended to comply with GDPR data-retention requirements. It also said that, in practice at that time, it had never deleted accounts inactive for less than four years. PC Gamer’s report of Ubisoft’s response captures that historical clarification.
Ubisoft later revised Article 8 of its terms to explain the scenarios in which it may delete inactive accounts and the steps users can take to prevent deletion. The terms update said users had until March 20, 2026 to accept the revised terms. That date has passed; the current international terms, rather than the 2023 practice statement, are the relevant guide to the policy now.
How the current inactivity policy works
The current international terms say Ubisoft may close an account that “has been inactive for a long time” and meets “specific inactivity criteria” that will be detailed in the email or notification about the upcoming closure. They do not set one fixed inactivity duration that applies to every account.

The terms also promise at least 30 days’ advance notice before closure. That notice is meant to warn you about the impending closure and its consequences, and to explain what steps you can take to keep the account open. The applicable criteria and response instructions therefore come from the notice you receive, not from a universal four-year rule.

Will inactivity delete your purchased games?
Ubisoft’s privacy policy distinguishes limited deletion of personal data after prolonged inactivity from full account closure: it says some data may be deleted “without affecting your game library.” That is not the same as promising that a dormant account with purchases can never be closed. Ubisoft’s current international inactivity wording does not state a universal purchased-game exemption.

A voluntary request to close your Ubisoft account is a separate case. Ubisoft says that closing the account means losing access to the account, games, game progress, Ubisoft online services, open Ubisoft Store orders, and links to external accounts. Do not treat the policy on limited data deletion as assurance that a voluntary full closure preserves game access.
What to do if you receive a closure notice
- Check that the message is genuine. Use Ubisoft’s official account or support channels rather than links in a message you do not trust.
- Read the deadline and criteria in the notice. The current terms say those specific inactivity criteria and the steps to keep the account open will be explained in the email or notification.
- Follow the stated steps before the deadline. Ubisoft’s terms promise at least 30 days’ prior notice, but the action required depends on the notice.
- Contact Ubisoft Support promptly if the instructions are unclear or you cannot complete them. Keep the notice and any support correspondence so you can refer to the stated deadline and guidance.
How long can a Ubisoft account stay inactive?
The current international terms do not publish one universal number of months or years. They describe a long period of inactivity plus specific criteria communicated in a closure notice. The four-year figure comes from Ubisoft’s 2023 description of what it had done in practice up to that point; it should not be used to calculate a guaranteed safe period today.
