The most useful way to classify a computer screenshot is by what it captures: the entire screen, one window or menu, a selected rectangle, or an irregular freeform shape. Web browsers add a separate full-page mode for content below the viewport, while screen recording produces video rather than a still image. File format is another independent choice.
This guide explains each type, the current Windows and macOS methods, browser-page captures, format trade-offs, timing options, and when an API is more practical than a desktop tool.
The main types of computer screenshots
Capture area and output type are separate decisions. A window capture can be saved as PNG or JPEG; a full-screen capture can be a still image or, with a recording tool, moving video. Use these categories to describe the result you need.
1. Full-screen screenshot
A full-screen screenshot records everything currently visible on one display: application windows, the desktop, menus, and notifications. It is useful for documenting an error exactly as it appeared or sharing a complete workspace.

- Windows: Print Screen copies the whole screen to the clipboard. In Snipping Tool, choose Full screen; Windows+Shift+S opens the image-capture overlay.
- Mac: press Shift+Command+3. The image is saved according to the Screenshot settings.
2. Window or menu screenshot
This captures one application window or an open menu without the rest of the desktop. It produces cleaner support tickets and documentation when surrounding information is irrelevant.
- Windows: open Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S, then select Window mode and choose the target window.
- Mac: press Shift+Command+4, press Space to switch to the camera pointer, and click the window or menu. Option-click can omit the window shadow.
Some protected applications can block capture. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not allow their windows to be captured.
3. Rectangular-region screenshot
A rectangular region is a user-drawn box around part of the display. It is the quickest choice for a paragraph, chart, dialog, or interface control.
- Windows: choose Rectangle in Snipping Tool and drag around the area.
- Mac: press Shift+Command+4, drag the crosshair, then release.
4. Freeform screenshot
Freeform mode follows an irregular outline instead of a rectangle. It helps isolate a signature, object, or diagram with a non-rectangular silhouette. Windows Snipping Tool calls this Freeform; draw the boundary after opening the capture overlay.
5. Full-page or scrolling webpage screenshot
A normal screen capture stops at the visible viewport. A full-page webpage capture stitches or renders content below the fold, including sections that require scrolling. In Microsoft Edge, use the Screenshot feature and choose the full-webpage option, then copy or save the result.

This is a browser/page capture, not another desktop-selection shape. Availability can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Animated GIFs, carousels, and other moving content remain at the frame shown while the page is captured, so position the page first if a particular frame matters.
6. Still screenshot versus screen recording
A screenshot is one still image. A screen recording (called a video snip in Windows Snipping Tool) is a moving clip of a selected rectangular area. Use a still for a state you want to cite or print; use video when the sequence of clicks, animation, or timing is the evidence.
On Windows, Windows+Shift+R opens the video-capture overlay. Snipping Tool also supports annotation, cropping, text extraction (OCR), saving, and sharing after an image capture.

Capture type is different from file format
Choose the area first, then choose how to encode the resulting image. The same full-screen or window capture can be exported in several formats.
| Format | Strength | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless compression and transparency | Often larger than lossy formats for photographic images | Interface text, diagrams, logos, line art, and screenshots where sharp edges must remain exact |
| JPEG | Small files for continuous-tone imagery | Lossy compression can blur text and create colored fringes around sharp edges | Photos or captures where file size matters more than pixel-perfect UI detail |
| WebP | Modern compression with broad browser support | Some older software and workflows may not accept it | Web delivery when your publishing pipeline supports it |
| AVIF | Very efficient modern compression and advanced image features | Compatibility is less universal than PNG or JPEG | Size-sensitive web delivery after checking the target browsers and tools |
MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art because compression artifacts are conspicuous around text and sharp edges. PNG is therefore a defensible default for documentation. Select JPEG, WebP, or AVIF when your compatibility requirements and file-size target justify the trade-off.

Windows and Mac workflows at a glance
| Goal | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Entire display | Print Screen, or Snipping Tool > Full screen | Shift+Command+3 |
| Selected rectangle | Windows+Shift+S > Rectangle | Shift+Command+4, drag |
| Window or menu | Windows+Shift+S > Window | Shift+Command+4, then Space |
| Irregular region | Windows+Shift+S > Freeform | Use selected-portion capture and crop afterward |
| Video clip | Windows+Shift+R | Open Screenshot controls with Shift+Command+5 and choose a recording option |
On macOS Mojave 10.14 and later, Shift+Command+5 opens the Screenshot app. It provides a timer, save-location controls, and pointer-visibility settings. A timer is useful when a menu must be opened or a hover state prepared before capture.
How to choose the right type
- Define the evidence. If the surrounding desktop matters, choose full screen. If only one app matters, choose a window. For a single control or message, choose a rectangle or freeform outline.
- Check whether content is below the fold. Use a browser full-page capture for an entire article, landing page, or long dashboard. A desktop full-screen image cannot include pixels that are not currently visible.
- Decide still versus motion. Use a still for a reproducible state; record when the order or timing of actions is important.
- Choose fidelity and compatibility. Start with PNG for text and UI. Choose JPEG, WebP, or AVIF only after confirming the destination accepts the format.
- Control what is exposed. Close unrelated windows, hide private notifications, and check the image at 100% zoom before sharing.
Delayed and specialized captures
Immediate capture is not always accurate. A timer lets you prepare a menu, tooltip, hover state, or transient notification. macOS Screenshot includes a timer; Windows Snipping Tool lets you capture after opening the overlay and preparing the target. For web pages, wait until fonts, lazy-loaded images, and interactive components have finished rendering before taking a full-page image.

Capturing webpages programmatically
Browser tools are ideal for an occasional page. An API is more consistent for many URLs, scheduled documentation, regression snapshots, or server-side workflows. Before automating, decide whether you need the viewport or the entire page, whether authentication is required, and how to handle cookie banners, lazy loading, animations, and failures.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatible parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or only partly rendered
Wait for network activity, fonts, and lazy images to finish. For a webpage API, use a selector wait, delay, or network-idle condition and ensure the target URL is reachable without an interactive login.
A cookie banner, popup, or chat bubble covers the content
Dismiss it before a desktop capture. In automation, use a click action, hide selectors, custom JavaScript, or a cleanup option that recognizes consent platforms and overlays.
The full page is missing sections
Confirm that you selected the browser’s full-page mode rather than a viewport screenshot. Infinite-scroll pages may require a defined stopping condition; content that loads only after interaction may need a click or scripted step first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Text looks fuzzy
Prefer PNG, avoid repeated JPEG recompression, and inspect at 100% zoom. Check browser zoom and display scaling if text is consistently soft.
The capture includes private information
Review notifications, other windows, account identifiers, and browser tabs before sharing. Crop or redact sensitive regions; do not rely on a screenshot tool to remove secrets automatically.

FAQ
Can one screenshot have more than one type?
Yes. “Window capture” describes the area, while “PNG” describes the file. A single image can therefore be a window screenshot saved as a PNG, or a full-page webpage capture saved as WebP.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is a scrolling webpage image the same as a full-screen screenshot?
No. A full-screen image contains only the pixels visible on the display. A full-page browser capture includes content below the viewport and depends on browser or service support.
Which format should I send to technical support?
Use PNG unless the support system rejects it or imposes a strict size limit. PNG preserves small text and interface edges better than lossy JPEG.
Frequently Asked Questions
