Tyler Adams is the new captain of the U.S. men’s national team. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino named the midfielder to the role on October 2, 2026, beginning a new leadership cycle after Tim Ream’s international retirement. The appointment is framed around the road to the 2030 World Cup, but it does not guarantee Adams will captain every match through that tournament.
Who is the new USMNT captain?
Adams, an AFC Bournemouth midfielder, was named captain by Pochettino ahead of the United States’ friendly against Mexico in Arizona. U.S. Soccer published the announcement on October 3, 2026, reporting that the decision was made the previous day. U.S. Soccer’s announcement is the source for the appointment and the coach’s direct remarks; Agence France-Presse also reported the change and described it as the captaincy for the 2030 World Cup cycle (AFP).

U.S. Soccer reported that Adams had made 60 senior appearances and scored two goals as of its October 3 article. Those are the federation’s totals at publication, not an independently audited career tally.
Why did Pochettino choose Adams?
Pochettino presented Adams as a leader for the team’s next period. U.S. Soccer quoted him saying, “It’s so happy to announce, and for everyone to know, that he’s going to be our leader and our captain.” AFP separately quoted the coach: “He’s the player that can lead the period that we have ahead.” The transcriptions differ, so each quote is attributed to its original report.

Adams said he was “extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity,” according to U.S. Soccer. AFP reported that he wanted to “lead this group into a winning culture.”
What happened to Tim Ream?
Ream captained the United States through the 2026 World Cup and announced his retirement from international soccer earlier in the week, U.S. Soccer reported. The federation said Ream had been Pochettino’s captain 23 times and had 86 caps at the time of its October 3, 2026 article. His retirement created the opening for a new captain.
Was Adams captain before?
Yes. Adams captained the United States at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. U.S. Soccer reported he was 23 years and 288 days old during that tournament, making him the youngest captain there and the youngest American World Cup captain since Walter Bahr in 1950. Those historical comparisons are attributed to the federation.

The announcement establishes Adams as captain for the new national-team cycle, which is being built toward the 2030 World Cup. U.S. Soccer reported that Pochettino’s contract runs through 2030, and AFP also framed Adams’s appointment around that cycle. Neither report says Adams is guaranteed to wear the armband in every match or that the role cannot change before 2030.
