What happened at the temple?
Residents reportedly noticed smoke at about 7 a.m. on October 1 and found one body still burning and the other severely burned at the temple in Sutha village, within Khudaganj police-station limits. Who were the two ascetics?
Hindustan Times identified the men as Gopal Das, 70, and Bihari Das, 60. It reported that Gopal Das had lived at the temple for nearly 20 years and that Bihari Das had begun staying with him around a month before the incident. The Indian Express described Bihari Das as becoming Gopal Das’s disciple about 10 years earlier, so reports differ on the length and nature of their association. The Indian Express, October 2
Has a suspect been arrested?
Yes. Early October 1 coverage said a local man named Sumit or Sumeet had been detained for questioning. By October 2, India Today reported that police had arrested him as Sumit Singh and recovered an iron rod said to have been used in the killings. These are reported police claims; they are not findings established in court. India Today, October 2

What do police allege about the killings and motive?
According to the account attributed to police questioning, the suspect attacked the ascetics while they were asleep and then set the bodies alight using firewood and ghee from the temple. Police reporting also described a possible motive involving a desire to stay at or gain control of the temple premises and nearby land. The motive and sequence remain allegations while investigators examine the evidence; the reviewed reports do not provide final post-mortem or forensic findings.
Hindustan Times attributed a statement to Shahjahanpur SSP Saurabh Dixit, who was relaying what villagers said the suspect had told the ascetics: “Both of you should leave this place. I am going to stay here now. I will have exclusive control over this place.” This is a villagers’ account reported by the SSP, not an independently verified direct statement from the suspect.
