Bluesky is a better fit for publishers who value community-built feeds, user choice over how content is ranked, and a more portable, open ecosystem. Neither platform guarantees reach or engagement. Choose based on where your readers participate, and compare results from your own accounts rather than treating network size as a forecast.
Threads vs. Bluesky at a glance
| What matters | Threads | Bluesky |
|---|---|---|
| Audience context | Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026. This is a company-reported platform figure, not a reach estimate for an individual publisher. Meta Newsroom | Bluesky’s FAQ reported over 44 million users as of May 2026. This company-reported figure uses different wording and a different reference date from Meta’s, so the totals are not a direct engagement comparison. Bluesky FAQ |
| Discovery and feeds | Offers public custom feeds people can share, explore, and pin; users can also set a custom feed as their default. Meta Newsroom | Emphasizes selectable feeds, including feeds created by developers and communities, so users can choose how posts are surfaced. Bluesky FAQ Bluesky Help Center |
| Publisher workflow and measurement | Documents a web experience with customizable columns and a persistent composer, plus native Insights covering views, interactions, audience growth, discovery sources, link visits, and performance over time. Meta Newsroom Meta Newsroom | The cited official materials emphasize feed creation and account portability. They do not establish equivalent native creator analytics. | Conversation and moderation controls | Documents reply approval and audience controls such as limiting replies to followers. Meta Newsroom | Documents mute, block, report, labeling services, and selectable feeds. Which platform has the larger audience?
The latest figures in the cited official sources favor Threads in reported scale, but they are not like-for-like: Meta said Threads had 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026, while Bluesky’s FAQ said it had over 44 million users as of May 2026. The companies use different labels and dates, and neither number tells you how many people will see or interact with a particular publisher’s posts.
Audience fit is more useful than a headline total. Meta said in a July 1, 2025 announcement that more than a third of daily Threads users with connections followed mostly different accounts on Threads than on Instagram. That is a company-reported claim about that described group, not proof that every publisher will find a separate audience there. Meta Newsroom
How discovery and feed control differ
Threads: shared feeds and personalized ordering
Threads supports public custom feeds that users can explore, share, and pin, and it lets users choose a custom feed as their default. Meta has also described personalized feed ordering and Your Algo, a feature that lets users temporarily express topic preferences. In its June 16, 2026 announcement, Meta described Your Algo as rolling out in certain named markets, so availability may depend on location and change over time. Meta Newsroom Meta Newsroom

Bluesky: selectable feeds and a developer ecosystem
Bluesky presents custom feeds as a way for users to choose the algorithm shaping their experience. Developers can publish feeds, and its Help Center points to a feed-generator starter kit. That makes Bluesky a natural fit for publishers whose readers gather around specific topics or communities, though a feed’s existence does not guarantee distribution or readership. Publishing workflow and measurement
Why Threads may suit a publishing desk
Meta’s documented Threads web experience includes customizable columns for monitoring feeds, saved and liked posts, and a persistent composer. Those features can make it easier to watch conversations and publish from a desktop workflow. Meta also describes Insights for views and interactions, audience growth, discovery sources, link visits, and performance over time. Feature availability can change, so check the current interface before building a workflow around a specific control. Meta Newsroom Meta Newsroom

What the cited Bluesky materials establish
Bluesky’s official materials highlight custom feeds, moderation options, and account portability. They do not establish a native creator-analytics feature set equivalent to the Insights described by Meta. Publishers who need comparable performance reporting should confirm which measures they can access in their own account and tools before choosing a measurement workflow.
Conversation management and moderation
Threads documents controls over who can reply and whether replies need approval, which can help publishers manage the shape of a discussion. Bluesky’s documented toolkit includes muting, blocking, reporting, and subscribing to labeling services, alongside feed choice. These are distinct approaches: reply controls shape interaction on a post, while labels and user controls can filter or manage content in a broader experience. Neither set of tools is a promise that every unwanted interaction will disappear.

Start with Threads if…
- Your readers or sources already participate in the Meta ecosystem, and you want to test whether Threads reaches them.
- You want documented native Insights and a desktop experience built around columns and a persistent composer.
- You expect to use reply approval or audience controls to manage high-volume conversations.
Start with Bluesky if…
- Your subject area has active communities or custom feeds that match the audience you want to serve.
- You want readers to choose among feeds and value a more open, portable account ecosystem.
- Community moderation labels and user-level mute, block, and report tools fit your approach to managing conversations.
Use both when audience evidence supports it
If your readers are meaningfully active on both services, maintaining both can be more sensible than making a platform-wide bet. Avoid assuming that identical posts will perform identically: audience composition, posting cadence, and available metrics differ.

There is no controlled evidence here that one platform universally produces better engagement. Run a small, defined comparison using your own audience and a consistent recording method:
Rank #4
- Choose a trial period and a set of comparable posts tied to the same editorial goals.
- Publish on both services at a similar cadence, while adapting the presentation to each platform rather than mechanically duplicating every post.
- Record each platform’s available reach and interaction measures, including link visits where available. Keep the platform and metric definitions attached to each figure.
- Compare results in context: account for audience size, posting frequency, and whether a post was surfaced through a custom feed or another discovery route.
- Continue investing where you see the strongest combination of relevant audience, useful conversations, and sustainable publishing effort.
This is a practical account-level trial, not a guarantee of statistical certainty or a substitute for platform-specific metric definitions.
