Yes—you can turn a hummed melody into piano-roll notes. Record one clear pitch at a time, convert the monophonic audio with Ableton Live’s Convert Melody to New MIDI Track command or export detected notes from Celemony Melodyne, then correct the resulting MIDI by ear. The conversion is a transcription, not a perfect performance capture: expect to fix wrong octaves, missed attacks, note lengths and timing before choosing an instrument.

What audio-to-MIDI conversion actually does

Audio-to-MIDI software analyzes a recording and estimates where notes begin, how long they last and which pitches they contain. It then writes those estimates as MIDI note events. MIDI contains instructions such as pitch, start time, duration and velocity; it does not contain the sound of your voice.

That distinction matters. A hummed phrase can trigger a piano, synthesizer, bass or orchestral plug-in after conversion, but the vocal timbre is not preserved. The generated notes are a starting transcription that you edit and perform through another instrument.

A hummed melody is normally monophonic: one principal pitch at any moment. Melody-focused conversion works best on that material. Chords, layered vocals, reverb-heavy recordings and overlapping instruments require different analysis and can produce ambiguous or unusable notes.

Prepare a source that the detector can understand

Record one melodic line

Sing or hum a single line without simultaneous harmony. Leave enough separation between pitches that the software can identify each attack. If you want to capture a bass line or guitar idea instead, record only that solo instrument. A chord or a doubled melody should be reduced to one source before using a melody converter.

Use a reliable input path

Connect a microphone or instrument to an audio interface, select that interface as the input device, and record onto an audio track. Ableton’s recording guidance describes this interface-to-track routing. Set a comfortable input level that is clear but not clipping; keep the microphone position and performance consistent so attacks are easy to detect.

Keep the recording clean and uncompressed

  • Prefer an uncompressed WAV or AIFF file when importing audio.
  • Reduce room noise, monitoring bleed and effects that blur the start of a note.
  • Use clear attacks rather than breathy entrances that have no definite pitch.
  • Record the isolated voice or instrument instead of a full mix.
  • Avoid relying on MP3 for conversion. Lossy encoding can make the result unpredictable.

A clean source does not guarantee a perfect transcription, but it gives the detector clearer evidence. If your only recording is an MP3, convert or re-record in WAV or AIFF when possible; changing the file extension alone does not restore information lost by compression.

Convert a hum in Ableton Live

Ableton Live’s Convert Melody command is designed for monophonic material. Ableton documents that it can analyze singing, whistling or a solo instrument and generate MIDI notes. The following sequence keeps the original audio available for checking.

  1. Create and route an audio track. Add an audio track, choose the audio interface input carrying your microphone or instrument, arm the track and verify that the meter responds to your performance.
  2. Record the phrase. Keep the melody single-note and leave a little space before and after it. Stop recording, then listen once for clipping, background sounds or overlapping notes.
  3. Inspect note boundaries. If Live displays transient markers for the clip, move a marker when an attack is visibly early or late. Correcting boundaries before conversion can help the command distinguish adjacent notes.
  4. Run the melody conversion. Select the recorded audio clip and choose Convert Melody to New MIDI Track. Live analyzes the clip and creates a separate MIDI track.
  5. Check the generated track. Live supplies a preview instrument so you can hear the transcription immediately. Keep the original audio track muted or available for A/B comparison rather than deleting it.
  6. Compare phrase by phrase. Play the hum and MIDI together. Stop at every discrepancy and identify whether the problem is pitch, timing, duration or a missing note.
  7. Edit in the piano roll. Drag a note to the correct pitch, move its start, trim or extend its end, and add or remove notes where the detector misread an attack. Zoom in for short notes and zoom out to check the musical phrase.
  8. Choose the final instrument last. Once the notes are accurate, replace the preview sound with the instrument you want to arrange or perform.

The command makes a useful first pass, not a finished score. Listening against the source is essential because a visually plausible piano roll can still contain an octave error or a note that starts a fraction too soon.

Refine the generated MIDI instead of accepting every note

Fix pitch and octave errors

Detection can place a note in the wrong octave, especially when the hum contains breath noise or an unstable vocal onset. Play the original recording and the MIDI together, then move the note by an octave or semitone only after confirming the intended pitch. Check the contour of the whole phrase rather than correcting isolated notes without context.

Restore missing attacks

A soft entrance, consonant or breath may not contain enough pitched energy to create a note. Draw a MIDI note where the melody clearly begins, then set its length to match the audible sustain. Do not turn every breath into a note; an unpitched inhale belongs in the audio performance, not necessarily in the MIDI line.

Correct starts, ends and timing

Short notes are commonly merged, split or given inaccurate lengths. Align each start with the audible attack and trim the end at the point where the pitch stops. Apply broad timing cleanup only after listening: aggressive quantization can remove intentional pauses and expressive pushes that were present in the hum.

Check velocity and articulation

The detector’s dynamics are an approximation. If the instrument sounds mechanically even, edit velocities to follow the musical accents you intended. MIDI velocity controls how the destination instrument responds; it does not recreate every change in vocal loudness or breath.

Use Melodyne when you need note-level audio editing

Melodyne provides a separate route from detected audio notes to a MIDI file. Its documentation states that exported MIDI notes represent the audio notes’ position, length and pitch, with velocity derived from amplitude. Breaths in vocal tracks are not exported as notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the recording in Melodyne. Use the isolated vocal or instrument take rather than a busy mix.
  2. Let Melodyne detect the notes. Review the note blobs or equivalent note display and listen to the phrase, watching for incorrect splits, octave choices and unpitched sections.
  3. Correct the audio-note interpretation. Adjust a detected note’s pitch, start or end when the analysis does not match the performance. Keep breaths and unpitched transitions as audio details rather than forcing them into MIDI.
  4. Export MIDI. Use Melodyne’s MIDI export to create a Standard MIDI file containing the detected note information.
  5. Import the file into your DAW. Open or drag the Standard MIDI file in Ableton Live or another DAW, assign an instrument and compare it with the original audio.
  6. Perform final MIDI cleanup in the DAW. Correct channel, octave, timing, duration and velocity choices in the piano roll before arranging.

This route is useful when you want to see and correct the audio interpretation before committing to a MIDI handoff. Melodyne’s exported notes are still an analysis of the recording, so they deserve the same listening check as Live’s generated track.

Decide between Ableton Live and Melodyne

Question Choose Ableton Convert Melody when… Choose Melodyne export when…
What is the source? You have a single-note hum, whistle or solo instrument clip. You have the same kind of monophonic source but need to inspect its detected notes closely.
How much editing do you need? You want a rapid transcription and are comfortable correcting MIDI in Live. You want to edit the audio-note interpretation before creating MIDI.
Where should the result go? Directly into the current Live Set as a new MIDI track. To any DAW that can import a Standard MIDI file.
What does the first result include? A MIDI track and preview instrument created by Live. Exported notes with position, length, pitch and amplitude-derived velocity; you choose the destination instrument after import.
What about cost? Confirm the current Live edition and license on Ableton’s official site. Confirm the current Melodyne edition and license on Celemony’s official site.

Neither option is a reliable shortcut for polyphonic transcription. If your recording contains chords, several singers or a full backing track, isolate the melody first or use a tool specifically designed for polyphonic material.

Troubleshoot common conversion failures

The result contains many random notes

Check whether the source is truly monophonic. Remove harmony, guitar strums, reverb tails and loud background noise, then make a new recording with clearer attacks. A lossy MP3 can also contribute to unstable detection; use WAV or AIFF.

Notes are consistently an octave too high or low

Confirm the intended register against the original hum and move the affected MIDI notes in the piano roll. If every note is wrong by the same octave, check the destination instrument’s octave or transpose setting before rewriting the entire clip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two sung notes become one long note

The boundary may not have a clear attack. Re-record with a slightly more distinct separation, adjust the transient marker before Ableton conversion, or split the resulting MIDI note manually at the audible change.

A note starts late or ends too early

Zoom in on the audio and compare the note event with the actual attack and decay. Move the MIDI start and extend its end to match the musical phrase; avoid using a global quantize command as a substitute for listening.

Breaths create unwanted MIDI notes

Breaths are unpitched, so they can confuse a detector at the edges of notes. In Melodyne, breaths in vocal tracks are not exported as notes. In Live, delete any false MIDI events generated by breath noise and leave the breath in the original audio only if you want to preserve that performance detail.

The MIDI sounds unlike the original singer

That is expected. MIDI triggers the selected instrument and carries note instructions; it does not carry the voice’s timbre. Choose a suitable synth, piano or sampled instrument, then shape its envelope, articulation and dynamics separately.

Export and organize the finished idea

Keep the original audio clip, the unedited conversion and the corrected MIDI in the same project until the arrangement is complete. Name the tracks clearly—for example, “Hum source,” “Converted MIDI” and “Final melody”—so you can return to the evidence if a later edit sounds wrong.

When moving the idea to another DAW, export or save the corrected MIDI in the format that application accepts. Melodyne’s documented handoff is a Standard MIDI file. After import, verify the tempo, starting bar, MIDI channel and instrument octave; a file can contain correct note data yet appear misplaced if the receiving project uses a different musical starting point.

A repeatable checklist

  • Record through an audio interface onto an audio track.
  • Keep only one principal pitch sounding at a time.
  • Use clear attacks and an isolated source.
  • Prefer WAV or AIFF over MP3 for conversion.
  • Adjust transient markers when note boundaries are unclear.
  • Run Ableton’s Convert Melody to New MIDI Track or export detected notes from Melodyne.
  • Audition MIDI against the original recording.
  • Correct pitch, octave, starts, ends, missing notes and velocity manually.
  • Assign the final instrument only after the transcription is accurate.

The practical answer is straightforward: hum one clean melody, convert it with a melody-focused tool, and treat the output as editable notation rather than a finished performance. Ableton Live is the quickest integrated path; Melodyne is the better fit when detailed audio-note inspection and a Standard MIDI file handoff are central to the workflow.
