The turbojet to hypersonic ramjet transition demonstrated by Hermeus was a ground-test milestone, not a Mach 5 aircraft flight. In November 2022, the company showed that its Chimera turbine-based combined-cycle engine could transition from turbine operation to ramjet operation in simulated high-Mach airflow at Notre Dame’s Turbomachinery Laboratory.

That distinction matters. Chimera is designed to give a runway-launched aircraft turbine-powered takeoff and acceleration, then route air around the turbine so a ramjet can provide propulsion at much higher speed. The test addressed one of the hardest parts of that concept—changing propulsion modes without losing stable airflow—but it did not demonstrate a complete hypersonic aircraft.

Key takeaways

  • Hermeus announced the Chimera turbine-to-ramjet transition test on November 17, 2022, after testing at the University of Notre Dame’s Turbomachinery Laboratory.
  • The test occurred on a ground stand using heated, pressurized airflow to represent high-Mach inlet conditions; no Chimera-powered aircraft reached hypersonic speed during the test.
  • Chimera is a turbine-based combined-cycle engine: the turbine handles takeoff and acceleration, while an integrated ramjet path is intended to handle higher-speed flight.
  • Hermeus describes Chimera as a Mach 5-capable design target, but public program updates do not establish that a complete Chimera-powered aircraft has already flown at Mach 5.
  • Quarterhorse Mk 1 began flight testing with a GE J85 in May 2025, while later F100 and precooler work is intended to lead toward a full Chimera installation in Quarterhorse Mk 3.
  • Darkhorse is the nearer-term uncrewed defense-oriented application; Halcyon remains a proposed commercial passenger aircraft concept rather than a certified airliner.

What is the turbojet to hypersonic ramjet concept?

The turbojet to hypersonic ramjet concept is an attempt to make one aircraft engine useful from runway takeoff through hypersonic cruise. A turbine engine can produce thrust while the aircraft is stationary or moving slowly, but a ramjet needs the aircraft to be moving rapidly before its inlet can compress air effectively.

In the original 2023 coverage, “turbojet” was a useful shorthand for the low-speed propulsion mode. Hermeus’ more technically precise term is turbine-based combined-cycle engine, or TBCC. The architecture combines a turbine core and a ramjet flow path with shared inlet, ducting, control, and exhaust-management hardware. It is not simply two unrelated engines bolted together.

The basic problem is an operating-envelope mismatch:

Propulsion mode Best role Main limitation
Turbine engine Runway takeoff and low-to-high-supersonic acceleration Rotating machinery, inlet temperature, pressure, and efficiency limits become increasingly important as speed rises.
Ramjet High-supersonic and hypersonic propulsion A ramjet needs substantial forward speed because the inlet and vehicle motion provide most of the air compression.
Rocket High thrust independent of atmospheric speed or oxygen availability The vehicle must carry oxidizer, making rocket propulsion less like ordinary aircraft operation.
TBCC such as Chimera Aims to cover the low-speed and high-speed envelope with integrated propulsion modes Inlet management, bypass hardware, thermal loads, combustion, and transition control are unusually complex.

Why can’t a ramjet take off from a runway?

A pure ramjet cannot provide useful static thrust in the same way a turbine engine can. A turbine engine uses rotating compressors to raise the pressure of incoming air before combustion, allowing the engine to operate from low forward speed. A ramjet has no comparable compressor; the aircraft’s forward motion and carefully shaped inlet must compress the air.

At takeoff, the aircraft is therefore moving too slowly for a pure ramjet to be a practical sole propulsion system. A separate rocket, booster, or turbine engine would be needed to accelerate the aircraft into the ramjet’s useful operating range. Chimera’s attraction is that the turbine mode is intended to provide the initial thrust inside the same integrated propulsion system.

How does Chimera transition from turbine to ramjet operation?

Chimera’s proposed transition is a controlled change in airflow rather than a simple engine start-and-stop sequence. The turbine supplies thrust at low speed; as the aircraft accelerates, the propulsion system increasingly routes air around the turbine core and into the ramjet combustor.

  1. Takeoff and low-speed acceleration: The turbine path is active and supplies the thrust needed to leave the runway and accelerate.
  2. Approach to the transition regime: As speed increases, the inlet delivers hotter, higher-pressure airflow. The turbine’s rotating machinery and thermal limits become more restrictive.
  3. Airflow bypass: Integrated doors, ducts, valves, and control logic redirect incoming air around the turbine core. The exact transition point is not a universal fixed Mach number; it depends on altitude, inlet pressure, temperature, throttle setting, and aircraft configuration.
  4. Ramjet light-off and stabilization: Fuel is burned in the ramjet combustor while the inlet and ducts maintain the pressure and mass flow needed for stable combustion.
  5. High-speed operation: The ramjet becomes the principal propulsion path, using the aircraft’s forward speed to compress air before combustion.

Older coverage sometimes described the ramjet as taking over at about Mach 3. That figure should be treated as an approximate reporting reference, not a guaranteed Chimera changeover speed. A real transition schedule would be determined by the engine’s inlet geometry, operating conditions, vehicle aerodynamics, fuel flow, and flight-control system.

What did the November 2022 Chimera test actually prove?

The November 2022 test demonstrated a turbine-to-ramjet transition on a ground test stand. Hermeus conducted the work at the University of Notre Dame’s Turbomachinery Laboratory using heated and pressurized airflow intended to reproduce selected high-Mach inlet conditions. Hermeus described the result in its primary account of the November 2022 engine test, announced November 17, 2022.

The practical achievement was stable mode transition under controlled test conditions. That matters because a TBCC engine must manage two very different flow paths while the pressure, temperature, fuel flow, and combustion state are changing. Demonstrating the transition on the ground reduced propulsion risk before a future flight attempt.

The test did not prove that a Chimera-powered aircraft flew at Mach 4 or Mach 5. A test facility can reproduce selected pressure and temperature conditions without the engine or aircraft traveling through the atmosphere at the corresponding Mach number. The accurate description is “ground-based testing under simulated high-Mach conditions,” not “a hypersonic flight.”

Question What the test supports What it does not establish
Did the engine transition modes? Yes. Hermeus reported a turbine-to-ramjet transition. It does not establish that every transition condition has been validated.
Was the test high-Mach relevant? Yes. Heated, pressurized airflow simulated selected high-Mach inlet conditions. It was not equivalent to an aircraft flying through the atmosphere.
Did a complete aircraft fly hypersonically? No such result is established by the 2022 test. Aircraft aerodynamics, flight controls, thermal protection, and aircraft-level integration remained to be demonstrated.
Did the test prove Mach 5 service? No. It was a propulsion technology milestone. It did not demonstrate a reliable, operational, aircraft-level Mach 5 system.

Hermeus said it designed, built, and tested Chimera in 21 months for $18 million. Those are company-reported development figures, not an independent industry-wide cost or schedule benchmark; the claim appears in Hermeus’ announcement of the test milestone.

Why is turbine-to-ramjet transition so difficult?

The hard part is not merely opening a bypass door. The engine must keep the inlet, combustor, turbine, ducts, exhaust, and control system within stable operating conditions while the aircraft is accelerating through a rapidly changing flight environment.

Inlet compatibility

The inlet must deliver usable airflow across a range that includes low-speed takeoff, supersonic acceleration, and hypersonic operation. An inlet that works well at one Mach number can produce poor pressure recovery, shock instability, or excessive heating at another.

Pressure matching and flow control

The turbine and ramjet paths need different pressure and mass-flow conditions. Bypass passages and valves must redirect air without causing destructive pressure oscillations, choking, or flow reversal.

Unstart and flow separation

Supersonic inlets rely on controlled shock structures. If downstream pressure becomes incompatible with the inlet, the shock system can move or separate from its intended position. This “unstart” can sharply reduce airflow quality and destabilize propulsion.

Thermal management

High-speed compression heats the incoming air before fuel is burned. The engine, ducts, valves, sensors, structure, and surrounding aircraft must tolerate high temperatures. Thermal management is one reason Hermeus has been testing a proprietary precooler with an F100 turbine core.

Ramjet combustion stability

The ramjet must ignite and remain lit while airflow conditions change. Combustion that is stable in a test condition may need different fuel scheduling and flameholding behavior during an accelerating flight transition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control-system timing

The transition must coordinate aircraft speed, altitude, inlet pressure, fuel flow, turbine state, bypass hardware, and ramjet combustion. A control system that reacts too slowly can lose the desired flow conditions; a system that moves too aggressively can produce pressure or thermal transients.

Aircraft integration

An engine-stand demonstration does not automatically validate free-flight behavior. A moving aircraft introduces changing angles of attack, atmospheric disturbances, structural vibration, aerodynamic back-pressure, fuel slosh, and interactions between the engine and vehicle control laws.

Is Chimera a scramjet?

No. Public descriptions identify Chimera as a turbine-based combined-cycle engine incorporating a ramjet, not a scramjet.

A ramjet slows incoming air to subsonic conditions in its combustor before burning fuel. A scramjet is a different propulsion concept in which combustion occurs while the airflow through the combustor remains supersonic. Calling Chimera a “scramjet engine” would therefore blur an important technical distinction. Hermeus’ current Chimera overview describes the system as a TBCC architecture with a ramjet component.

What is the difference between a turbojet, a turbine engine, and the F100?

“Turbojet” describes the shorthand used in the original coverage, while “turbine engine” or “turbine core” is safer for current reporting. The Pratt & Whitney F100 used in later Hermeus testing is more accurately described as a low-bypass afterburning turbofan, not a simple turbojet.

The distinction matters because the F100 is not the complete Chimera engine. Hermeus uses the F100 as the turbine core for later configurations and for Quarterhorse Mk 2-related testing. The full ramjet-equipped system is associated with the later Chimera and Quarterhorse Mk 3 path. Hermeus explains the F100 and precooler relationship in its F100 precooler-testing update.

Term Meaning in this program Why the wording matters
Turbojet Short description used in the original article for the turbine-powered mode Useful shorthand, but not the most precise description of every turbine configuration.
Turbine engine or turbine core The rotating-compressor engine portion that handles low-speed operation Preferred general wording for current Chimera coverage.
F100 A low-bypass afterburning turbofan used as a turbine core in later testing Calling the F100 a simple turbojet is technically inaccurate.
Ramjet The high-speed air-breathing combustion path in Chimera It is distinct from a scramjet because the combustor is not described as operating with supersonic internal airflow.

What does the precooler do?

The precooler is intended to lower the temperature of incoming air before that air enters the turbine system, extending the turbine’s useful speed range. The technology is important because a turbine core that can operate farther into the high-speed regime can make the transition to the ramjet path more manageable.

Hermeus has been testing a proprietary precooler with the F100. That testing should not be confused with a complete Chimera flight demonstration: the F100-powered Quarterhorse Mk 2 is intended to validate high-speed turbine operation and related technologies, while the ramjet-equipped Chimera system is planned for the later Mk 3 aircraft.

Hermeus’ HEAT-facility update describes the relationship between F100 testing, the Quarterhorse development path, and future Chimera integration. The precooler is an enabling subsystem, not a replacement for the ramjet.

How do Quarterhorse, Darkhorse, and Halcyon fit together?

Hermeus is using a staged aircraft-development approach rather than attempting to put the final passenger-aircraft concept into service immediately. The sequence separates early aircraft and flight-test learning from later turbine, thermal, and combined-cycle demonstrations.

Quarterhorse: the progressive test-aircraft family

Quarterhorse is the smaller test-aircraft family used to validate Hermeus’ airframe, propulsion, avionics, and flight-test processes progressively.

Vehicle or version Role Status or propulsion detail supported by the dossier
Quarterhorse Mk 0 Ground-test vehicle Used to validate aircraft subsystems without serving as a flying aircraft.
Quarterhorse Mk 1 Early flight-test aircraft Uncrewed and powered by a GE J85; Hermeus reported its first flight in May 2025.
Quarterhorse Mk 2 / Mk 2.1 Higher-speed turbine development Uses an F100-related propulsion configuration and precooler work; Hermeus has stated a target above Mach 2.5 for the Mk 2 configuration.
Quarterhorse Mk 3 Future full combined-cycle demonstration path Intended to integrate the Chimera propulsion system and demonstrate turbine-to-ramjet transition in flight.

The exact Mk 2 and Mk 2.1 sequence has evolved as Hermeus has iterated its development program. The safest interpretation is that later Quarterhorse aircraft are stepping stones toward full Chimera integration, not evidence that the final Chimera-powered aircraft has already completed its intended flight demonstration. Hermeus’ later Quarterhorse flight update and Mk 2 newsroom material provide the program chronology.

Darkhorse: the defense-oriented application

Darkhorse is a larger reusable uncrewed hypersonic aircraft concept for defense and national-security missions. Hermeus says Darkhorse will use a more powerful Chimera II configuration with an F100 turbine core. The Darkhorse program description identifies the vehicle as a reusable hypersonic uncrewed aircraft, not a passenger aircraft.

Darkhorse is a different development target from a commercial airliner. An uncrewed defense vehicle can have different payload, route, certification, operating-base, test-range, and mission-duration requirements. Those differences make Darkhorse a more direct military application of the technology than an immediate bridge to passenger service.

Halcyon: the commercial passenger concept

Halcyon is Hermeus’ proposed commercial passenger aircraft associated with the long-term Mach 5 vision. Earlier coverage described a concept with approximately Mach 5 performance, a range of about 4,600 miles, capacity for up to 20 passengers, and a roughly 90-minute Paris–New York journey.

Those figures are company concepts or projections, not demonstrated aircraft specifications. Halcyon is not an available, certified, or airline-operated aircraft. A passenger aircraft would need to solve additional problems involving certification, passenger safety, airport compatibility, noise, thermal-cycle maintenance, fuel economics, emergency procedures, and reliable repeated operations.

What are Chimera’s advantages and trade-offs?

Chimera’s central advantage is runway independence without requiring a separate rocket booster. The turbine mode could provide takeoff and initial acceleration, while the ramjet could support higher-speed flight. Hermeus also says that using existing gas-turbine hardware can reduce development time and cost compared with creating an entirely new turbine from scratch.

The trade-off is an engine that must work across a much wider envelope than a conventional aircraft engine. Bypass ducts, valves, inlet structures, thermal systems, sensors, and control software add mass and failure modes. The aircraft must also carry high-temperature structural and thermal-protection systems.

Hypersonic range would not be determined by engine thrust alone. Fuel fraction, aerodynamic drag, inlet performance, thermal limits, aircraft mass, trajectory, and the amount of usable payload all affect the result. A successful propulsion transition is therefore a gateway technology, not proof that the complete aircraft has solved hypersonic flight.

What did the original Chimera coverage get right—and what needs updating?

The January 24, 2023 New Atlas article correctly identified the core engineering problem: a ramjet is ineffective at static and low speed, while a turbine engine becomes less suitable as speed rises. The article also correctly focused on Chimera’s concept of using the turbine first and diverting airflow around it so the ramjet can take over. See the original January 24, 2023 coverage for that historical framing.

What changed is the development context. The original story could make a Mach 4-capable aircraft appear close to flight. Later updates show a more staged path: early J85-powered Quarterhorse flight testing, F100 and precooler testing for higher-speed turbine operation, and full Chimera integration reserved for Quarterhorse Mk 3.

Claims about beating the SR-71’s approximately Mach 3.3 benchmark also require a precise category. A company target for an uncrewed test vehicle is not the same as a verified crewed-aircraft record, an air-breathing aircraft record, or an operational service achievement. Chimera should not be described as having broken the SR-71 record.

What remains to be demonstrated?

The 2022 ground test addressed one major risk, but a complete operational system would need to demonstrate much more:

  • Stable inlet operation across the aircraft’s actual flight envelope.
  • Reliable turbine-to-ramjet transition while the aircraft is accelerating in free flight.
  • Ramjet ignition, combustion stability, and sustained operation in the intended altitude and speed regime.
  • Thermal management for the engine, airframe, fuel system, sensors, and control surfaces.
  • Integration of propulsion controls with aircraft flight-control laws.
  • Repeated operation, maintenance, and recovery of a reusable vehicle.
  • Aircraft-level reliability and mission performance rather than isolated engine-stand behavior.

Those requirements explain why the Quarterhorse progression matters. A ground test can validate a critical component interaction; early flight vehicles can validate aircraft behavior; later versions can add the higher-speed turbine and combined-cycle hardware. Each step reduces a different category of risk.

So, was Chimera a hypersonic breakthrough?

Chimera was a meaningful propulsion breakthrough in the narrower sense: Hermeus demonstrated a turbine-to-ramjet mode transition during a controlled ground test under simulated high-Mach conditions. The result showed progress on a difficult TBCC problem and supported further development.

Chimera was not an operational hypersonic breakthrough in the sense of a complete aircraft flying at Mach 5. The most accurate description is credible technology maturation toward a runway-capable hypersonic aircraft. The engine’s intended Mach 5 capability, the future Quarterhorse Mk 3 demonstration, the Darkhorse aircraft, and the Halcyon airliner remain distinct program goals or concepts unless and until flight-test evidence establishes them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Hermeus’ Chimera engine reach Mach 4 during the 2022 test?

No. The November 2022 Chimera test was conducted on the ground using heated and pressurized airflow to simulate selected high-Mach inlet conditions. The test demonstrated a turbine-to-ramjet transition, but it did not involve a Chimera-powered aircraft flying at Mach 4.

Is Chimera a scramjet engine?

No. Hermeus describes Chimera as a turbine-based combined-cycle engine incorporating a ramjet. A scramjet is a different architecture in which combustion occurs in supersonic airflow through the combustor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When will Chimera fly in an aircraft?

The supplied program updates identify full Chimera integration with Quarterhorse Mk 3 as the intended flight-demonstration path, but they do not establish a completed full-Chimera flight milestone. Quarterhorse Mk 1 flew with a GE J85 in May 2025, while F100 and precooler testing supports later development.

Is Halcyon already a Mach 5 passenger aircraft?

No. Halcyon is a proposed commercial passenger aircraft concept. Hermeus has associated it with approximately Mach 5 performance, a 4,600-mile range, up to 20 passengers, and a roughly 90-minute Paris–New York flight, but those are projected concept figures rather than certified or demonstrated service specifications.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Hermeus’ Chimera test showed that a turbine-based combined-cycle engine could transition from turbine operation to ramjet operation on the ground under simulated high-Mach conditions. That is an important step toward runway-launched hypersonic aircraft, but it is not evidence that a complete Chimera-powered aircraft has already flown at Mach 5 or entered service.
