TTyGO is an open-source Arduino-based serial terminal project for viewing and interacting with serial devices on a compact screen. Its maintainers describe it as “a simple VT220 compatible serial terminal with some XTerm extensions with optional UTF-8 support.” That means VT220-style compatibility, not a claim that this small build reproduces every feature of a full-size DEC VT220.

What TTyGO does

TTyGO uses the U8g2 graphics library to display serial output. Hardware buttons act as programmable function keys, and the software also offers an on-screen keyboard. It can be useful when you need a portable view of diagnostic output from a device or a headless computer such as a Raspberry Pi, but its small display and few controls constrain text entry and extended terminal work.

The project documentation describes TTyGO as a “VT220 serial terminal for Arduino.” Its non-ASCII handling is limited: Latin-1/ISO 8859 is unsupported, and non-ASCII input is interpreted as UTF-8 or the DEC Special Character Set. The project documents a CSI 18 t query for asking the terminal for its screen size.

Which hardware is tested?

The project names two tested targets. Their documented limits and controls differ considerably:

Target Maximum serial speed Maximum screen size Buttons and functions Feature support
TTGO OLED ESP8266 SH1106 115200 baud 24 × 12 characters Three physical buttons; six programmable functions, or five with the on-screen keyboard enabled All software features can be enabled, according to the project documentation
Arduboy production version 9600 baud 24 × 12 characters Six physical buttons; twelve programmable functions, or eleven with the on-screen keyboard enabled Memory limits restrict features; Unicode support is unavailable on this target

The TTGO build supports serial over USB or a physical TTL-level serial connection. Hackaday likewise notes USB serial or a logic-level serial port, while cautioning that the tiny display and limited buttons are not suited to extensive typing. Check the board’s electrical interface and serial wiring before connecting it to another device; the listed baud rates describe documented project maxima, not a guarantee that every attached device uses those settings.

How the buttons and keyboard work

Each of the three physical buttons supports both a click and a long press, corresponding to the VT220 User Defined Keys model. On reset, their click/long-press pairs map to up/left, enter/escape, and down/right. Enabling the on-screen keyboard reduces the number of programmable button functions by one on each documented target.

ELEGOO UNO R3 Project Super Starter Kit with PDF Tutorial for Beginners
  • TURN CODE INTO REAL-WORLD RESULTS — Follow 22+ guided lessons to make LEDs blink, read temperature and distance, move servo and stepper motors, control an LCD and respond to joystick or IR input; ideal for a family weekend build, homeschool unit, coding club or STEM classroom
  • MORE PROJECT VARIETY IN ONE ORGANIZED KIT — Includes the UNO R3 controller, LCD1602 with pre-soldered header, breadboard power module, ultrasonic and DHT11 sensors, joystick, IR receiver and remote, SG90 servo, stepper motor, relay, DC motor, fan blade, displays, LEDs, buttons, resistors and jumper wires
  • START WITHOUT SOLDERING — Plug-in modules, a solderless breadboard and the pre-soldered LCD help beginners focus on wiring, code and testing; the illustrated component list makes it easier to find each part and move from one lesson to the next
  • LEARN THE LOGIC, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN — Use Arduino IDE and the included example code to understand digital input and output, analog sensing, timing, motor control and display functions, then change thresholds, speeds and sequences for alarms, environmental monitors, reaction games and motion projects
  • CLEAR SETUP SUPPORT FOR FIRST-TIME BUILDERS — Download the latest tutorial and code, select the UNO board and correct computer port, check component polarity and breadboard rows, and keep power-module input at 9V or below; younger learners should work with an experienced adult

This arrangement is best for navigation, simple responses, and occasional commands. Hackster’s project coverage also notes that the handful of buttons is not suited to entering long strings, so treat the keyboard as a limited input option rather than a substitute for a full keyboard.

How to build and configure TTyGO

The official build guide requires configuration rather than promising a universal plug-and-play build. Before compiling, edit TTyGO/config.h to match the target system and select the software features you want. The documented Arduino Library Manager dependencies are OneButton, U8g2, and ESP8266Scheduler.

  1. Choose a documented target. The project’s tested hardware evidence covers the TTGO OLED ESP8266 SH1106 and production Arduboy. Other hardware may need adaptation; do not assume that an arbitrary Arduino board will work unchanged.
  2. Configure the project. Edit TTyGO/config.h for the hardware and desired features. On the Arduboy, account for memory-related feature limits, including the lack of Unicode support.
  3. Install the libraries or use the automated path. Install OneButton, U8g2, and ESP8266Scheduler through Arduino Library Manager, or follow the build guide’s make upload route. That command can install arduino-cli if needed, fetch the ESP8266 board package and required libraries, build the project, and upload it.
  4. Build for the selected board. The build guide gives make FQBN=arduino:avr:leonardo upload as an example for another hardware platform. This is a build example, not evidence that every board is supported without configuration.

Is TTyGO a practical terminal?

TTyGO makes the most sense as a compact serial debugging display: it can show output from hardware or a headless computer without requiring a full monitor. The trade-off is input. A screen of at most 24 × 12 characters and a few button-based controls can make quick checks possible, but they do not provide the comfort or typing speed of a conventional terminal and keyboard.

If choosing between the documented builds, consider the device you already own, the serial speed you need, and whether the reduced feature set matters. The TTGO target has the higher documented baud-rate ceiling and permits all software features; Arduboy has more physical buttons but a lower baud-rate ceiling and memory-driven limitations.

What does it cost to build?

There is no verified current parts budget in the available project coverage. Hackster’s Cameron Coward wrote that the ESP8266 build “should be under $15” in the context of that article; treat that only as a historical estimate, not a present-day price. For a parts search, the project’s named TTGO ESP8266 OLED/SH1106 board is the clearest starting point, but verify the exact board revision, OLED controller, and button configuration rather than assuming all similarly named boards match.
