Whether Diamond Necklace can stay the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe’s mile-and-a-half distance was the central question Aidan O’Brien identified ahead of the race. He said her form and several physical indicators offered encouragement, but none could guarantee she would see out the trip.
Why the Arc distance is a question
In a Racing TV report published October 1, 2026, O’Brien said: “I think the only question is the distance with Diamond Necklace.” The uncertainty is about stamina: whether she can maintain her effort over the Arc’s longer distance, rather than whether she has shown high-class form.
The report says Diamond Necklace had won the French 1000 Guineas and the French Oaks. Those victories demonstrate strong form, but the results alone do not settle how she will handle the Arc trip.

Pedigree offers a clue, not proof
O’Brien said Diamond Necklace’s dam had stayed a mile and a quarter but had not raced farther. He also pointed to mile-and-a-half influences elsewhere in her family. That pedigree gives a reason to think the extra distance may suit, but it does not establish that she will stay it.

Physical indicators are encouraging but inconclusive
O’Brien cited stride length, heart rate and the way Diamond Necklace settles as signs that could indicate stamina. As Racing TV quoted him: “There’s things like stride length, her heart rate, the way she settles that give you an indication and all those suggest she could, but still you can never be sure.” He also said: “She’s in good form, will she get a mile and a half? We can’t be sure.”
These are the trainer’s observations, not a published statistical assessment of her chance of staying. They support cautious optimism, not certainty.
What was known about her Arc entry
As of October 3, 2026, Irishracing.com’s profile listed Diamond Necklace for Longchamp on October 4 over 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 204 yards. That was a pre-race entry listing, not confirmation of the final declarations or a record of the result. The reviewed reports and profile do not establish her eventual race-day status, the going, her jockey or how she finished.

Diamond Necklace’s Group 1-winning form makes her credentials clear; the unresolved issue is whether that quality will carry over the longer Arc trip. Her pedigree and the indicators O’Brien described suggest she could stay, while the trainer himself stressed that nobody could be sure in advance. The available pre-race reporting does not justify turning that possibility into a prediction.
