A video prompt is only one part of a useful test record. To know whether an edit helped—or whether a model update changed the result—save the exact prompt alongside its model or service version, generation settings, inputs, evaluation criteria, and observed output. Then rerun the same cases when you make a change.
Why the prompt text alone is not enough
The same words can produce different results when the model, service version, settings, seed, or source media changes. If you save only the prompt and a finished clip, you cannot reliably tell which change caused a better or worse result.
AWS Prescriptive Guidance states: “As central components of a generative AI system, prompts cannot be treated as simple text files that are unplanned and unmanaged.” Its prompt-lifecycle guidance recommends versioning prompts, linking versions to evaluation results, documenting why a version changed, and validating it in staging before production (AWS prompt-lifecycle guidance).
Think of each prompt revision as a testable version, not an isolated piece of prose. The record should let another person reproduce the comparison as closely as the service allows and understand why a result passed or failed.

Build a repeatable prompt-testing workflow

Define the intended result and how to judge it
Describe what the video must do in observable terms: for example, whether the main subject stays recognizable, an action occurs in the intended order, or the camera movement matches the brief. Decide which checks are scored by a person and which can be assessed with a grader. OpenAI’s evaluation documentation describes datasets, annotations, graders, and comparisons among prompt variants (OpenAI evaluation documentation).

Save a baseline and representative cases
Store the exact baseline prompt and a small set of representative inputs. Include ordinary examples as well as difficult cases that expose likely weaknesses. When a new failure or blind spot appears, add it to the evaluation set rather than relying on memory to check it next time. OpenAI recommends expanding datasets with newly identified edge cases.

Record the model, settings, and inputs
For every run, note the provider and model or service version, the date or access point if a version is not exposed, relevant generation controls, and the seed when available. Preserve any source image, video, or other input, or use a durable reference to it. Do not assume a seed guarantees identical output across runs, model updates, or providers; Amazon Nova Reel’s documentation recommends keeping a seed consistent to help isolate wording changes, not as a promise of determinism.

Change one meaningful thing at a time
Keep the test cases and other settings steady while changing the prompt. If you change the model, seed, and wording together, the result cannot show which change mattered. After evaluating a prompt edit, test model or settings changes separately where practical.

Compare results against the criteria
For each output, record scores or pass/fail judgments and annotate subjective failures. A practical comparison rubric is adherence to the brief, visual and temporal quality, repeatability where supported, recurring failure patterns, and cost or latency if measured. This is a working rubric, not a shared cross-provider benchmark. OpenAI’s Sora System Card describes a safety-evaluation framework combining model input prompts with input and output classifiers; that illustrates one evaluation design, not a general measure of creative quality (OpenAI Sora System Card).

Promote passing versions and keep their history
Once a version meets its criteria, move it through review or staging validation before production use. Retain the prompt, configuration, output reference, evaluation results, and change rationale so you can compare later versions or roll back. AWS recommends staging validation; OpenAI documents comparisons among prompt variants and evaluation datasets.

What to put in a version record
The following fields form a practical record; they are a synthesis of the cited guidance, not a mandated industry standard.

| Provider and model | The service and model/version used. If the provider does not expose a version, record the access date. |
| Settings and seed | Relevant generation controls and the seed, if the service exposes one. |
| Input media | Source image, video, or other inputs, or a durable reference to them. |
| Expected outcome and criteria | The intended result, evaluation metrics, and any grader or human-review instructions. |
| Output reference | The generated video itself or a durable reference to it. |
| Result and annotations | Pass/fail or scores, plus notes about visual, temporal, or other observed failures. |
| Change rationale | What changed and why, linked to the evaluation result. |
This record connects a version label and rationale to expected output and evaluation metrics, while preserving datasets, annotations, graders, and prompt comparisons where those tools are available.
Account for provider-specific prompt behavior
Prompt limits and generation advice are not universal. Amazon Nova Reel’s documentation says prompts are generally limited to 512 characters, with up to 4,000 characters allowed for a single prompt used for videos longer than six seconds. Those are Nova Reel limits, not general limits for AI video services (Amazon Nova Reel prompting guidance).

For Nova Reel, AWS advises keeping the seed consistent while making small prompt changes, then varying seeds after refining the prompt. Its documentation also warns that negation can lead to the opposite result. Treat this as guidance for Nova Reel, not a guarantee or universal rule: check the current documentation for the service you use and record its behavior in your test case.
How to interpret evaluation and dates
Evaluation can address different questions. A safety system may inspect prompts and generated media, while a creative-quality review asks whether the clip meets a particular brief. Keep those goals distinct when choosing criteria. OpenAI reported that external red-teamers in nine countries tested multiple iterations of Sora safety mitigations from September through December 2024, with more than 15,000 generations tested. That figure describes safety red-teaming, not a prompt-quality benchmark or evidence that versioning improves video quality by a particular amount.
OpenAI’s evaluated-datasets guide states that its Evals platform is scheduled to become read-only on October 31, 2026, and shut down on November 30, 2026. These are platform timeline statements, not general dates for prompt evaluation tools; check the guide for current status before depending on that platform (OpenAI evaluation documentation).
