Check your home mobile plan before buying anything: if roaming at your destination is already included, it is usually the simplest choice. If it costs extra, compare the full trip cost with a travel eSIM for the same destination, length of stay, and expected data use. A travel eSIM can be cheaper, but it requires a compatible, unlocked phone and setup—and many plans provide data only.

How do travel eSIMs and roaming differ?

With home-carrier roaming, your existing mobile line connects to a partner network abroad. You keep using your usual number, while your carrier’s destination-specific inclusions, pass, or usage charges determine the cost. A travel eSIM is a separate mobile plan installed as an eSIM profile; it typically supplies data through another provider or network.

These options are not mutually exclusive. You can use a travel eSIM for data and leave your home line available for calls or messages, but the home line may still incur roaming charges. The data line, voice/SMS terms, and roaming settings all matter.

What to compare Home-carrier roaming Travel eSIM
Cost May be included, sold as a pass, or billed by usage; check the destination and plan terms. Usually a destination- or region-specific data plan; compare the allowance, validity, and total trip cost.
Setup Usually less setup; a roaming pass may need to be enabled or purchased. Requires buying and installing or activating a separate profile, selecting the data line, and tracking its allowance. Installation may require Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
Phone eligibility Your carrier must offer roaming in the destination. For a different carrier, the phone must be unlocked and support eSIM; check the destination’s network compatibility too.
Calls and texts Your usual number remains on the home line; inclusions and charges depend on your carrier plan. Many plans are data-only. Conventional calls or SMS are included only when the specific plan says so; internet calling and messaging apps use data.
Potential surprises Out-of-plan use, per-unit charges, and usage limits can affect the bill. Data caps, reduced speeds, validity limits, and unintended home-line use can matter.

Apple explains that international roaming with an eSIM works the same way as roaming with a physical SIM. The difference is the plan and line you use, not an exemption from roaming terms. Apple Support’s iPhone travel guidance also notes that regional exceptions apply to device compatibility.

Which is cheaper: a travel eSIM or roaming?

There is no universal winner. First find out whether your existing plan includes roaming at the destination. If it does, using that allowance is often the simplest option. If it does not, compare the carrier’s pass or usage cost against an eSIM plan that covers your actual trip.

A useful published comparison comes from Ofcom’s 2026 UK communications market report. For a defined case—10 GB over ten days, for UK pay-monthly customers whose plans did not already include roaming and whose inclusive data allowance exceeded 10 GB—the sampled averages were:

Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece £19.06 £19.50 Ofcom’s sampled UK network brands charging for EU roaming; O2’s free EU roaming was excluded. Selected roaming options ranged from £17.00 to £21.50; sampled eSIM options ranged from £13.39 to £30.00.
United States £21.99 £49.28 Four UK network brands in Ofcom’s comparison. Sampled roaming options ranged from £36.00 to £78.60; eSIM options ranged from £14.99 to £30.00.

These are averages from tariffs collected in August and September 2025, reported by Ofcom in February 2026—not current offers, prices for every UK customer, or a global average. Ofcom compared cheapest available options, including unlimited eSIM plans, among Uswitch, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Saily, Holafly, and Jetpac. Its figures do not include the extra effort of setup, billing, or phone configuration. The report notes that people with included or fee-free roaming are unlikely to save by switching to a travel eSIM. Read Ofcom’s report and comparison.

Your result may differ if you are travelling somewhere else, staying for a different length of time, using more or less data, or relying on a hotspot. Compare the complete trip cost and the plan’s practical limits, not just its advertised data price.

When is home-carrier roaming the better choice?

Your plan already covers the destination

Check the exact countries included, the data allowance, and whether calls or texts are covered. “Roaming included” can still come with a fair-use limit or different terms after an allowance is used.

You value simplicity or need your usual number

Roaming usually means fewer setup steps and keeps your home line as the connection. That can be useful for conventional calls or SMS, provided your carrier’s plan covers them at an acceptable cost.

You are making a short or low-data trip

A pass or included allowance may be more practical than installing another profile for a brief visit. Compare actual total cost rather than assuming a per-gigabyte price tells the whole story.

When is a travel eSIM the better choice?

Paid roaming costs more for your expected use

If your carrier charges for the destination, compare its pass or expected usage bill with a travel eSIM that lasts for your trip and supplies enough data. Ofcom’s US example shows a substantial average gap in its particular 10-day, 10-GB sample; its selected EU sample was nearly even.

You can use a separate data plan

Travel eSIMs can be a good fit if your main need is maps, browsing, messaging apps, or other data use and you are comfortable managing a second line. Do not assume a data plan also includes a local number, conventional calls, or SMS.

Your phone is ready for it

Apple says many regions support eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, with exceptions by model and region. To use an eSIM from another carrier, the iPhone must be unlocked. Verify your exact phone, carrier-lock status, destination coverage, and network compatibility before buying. Apple’s eSIM setup and travel guidance provides model and regional qualifications.

How to choose without surprise charges

  1. Check your home plan: Ask your carrier whether the destination is included, what data, call, and text allowances apply, whether you must buy or activate a pass, and what happens when a limit is reached. Apple advises contacting your carrier before travel to avoid higher rates. Apple’s data-roaming guidance explains the need to check your carrier’s terms.
  2. Estimate your trip use: Set the destination, number of days, and realistic data needs. Include navigation, video, messaging, and hotspot use as relevant; the Ofcom figures above describe only 10 GB over ten days.
  3. Confirm device and installation eligibility: Check that your phone supports eSIM, is unlocked if the plan uses another carrier, and works with the destination network. Find out whether installation requires an internet connection so you can arrange Wi-Fi or another connection before departure.
  4. Read the eSIM plan terms: Confirm the data amount, validity period, speed policy, hotspot or tethering rules, voice and SMS inclusions, and top-up options. Providers may apply usage or speed limits.
  5. Choose the data line and review roaming settings: Set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data if that is your plan. Decide whether to keep the home line on for calls or messages, and review its data-roaming setting and carrier charges. Keeping it enabled can still incur roaming fees.

What to check before you leave

  • The destination is covered by the home plan or eSIM, including any country-specific restrictions.
  • The full cost matches the length of the trip and expected data use.
  • The phone is compatible, and unlocked where required.
  • You know whether the eSIM includes only data or also a phone number, calls, and SMS.
  • You understand data limits, speed reductions, validity, and hotspot rules.
  • The correct line is selected for mobile data, and you understand what charges may apply to the home line.
