Topaz’s video-enhancement software has offered genuinely ambitious AI tools, but its history also includes features explicitly labeled beta, research preview, or early access. That makes “early access” a useful description of parts of the experience—not a blanket status for every model or for the product today. The distinction matters even more after Topaz’s 2025 shift to a new subscription product, Topaz Video, while preserving legacy perpetual licenses for existing Video AI customers.

Why the “early access” label has some basis

The clearest evidence is in the product’s own release history. On August 5, 2021, the Video Enhance AI v2.4.0 release added explicit support for beta models and a setting that let users enable them. The release notes said the application would display when new beta models were ready to try. They also separated model downloads from application updates, so model availability could change independently of an app update. Topaz’s Video Enhance v2.4.0 release notes

That is evidence of an experimental model workflow in that release; it does not establish that every feature was unfinished, or that the product remains in the same state now. It does explain why users could encounter tools whose behavior, availability, or maturity differed from the main application.

Starlight made the trade-offs unusually visible

On February 19, 2025, Topaz introduced Starlight with Video AI 6.1 as its first diffusion model for video enhancement. The launch was staged: Topaz described a research preview and an early-access render option. It also spelled out a substantial processing trade-off: “Because of its size, this model is significantly slower and more expensive to run than previous models, and requires cloud processing on server-grade graphics hardware.” Topaz’s Video AI 6.1 announcement

That cloud requirement and performance warning applied to Starlight as described at launch, not automatically to every Topaz model. Later product materials describe selected local model options, depending on user tier and hardware. There is no basis here for a general performance ranking or a promise that one generation will always be faster or produce better results.

What the early-access limits meant at launch

Topaz’s February 2025 announcement described three 10-second previews per week during the research-preview phase and an early-access render limit of up to 9,000 frames (five minutes at 30 fps). It also listed 90 credits per minute as introductory, under-cost early-access pricing that was expected to change. Those were dated rollout terms, not reliable current allowances or prices. Topaz changed the product and license model in 2025

On September 17, 2025, Topaz announced Topaz Video 1.0 as part of Topaz Studio. The announcement said Topaz Video would be available only by subscription, while existing Video AI customers would retain access under legacy perpetual licenses. It also directed new features and models to Topaz Video. Topaz’s Topaz Video 1.0 announcement

This creates two separate questions for buyers: whether an existing perpetual license still provides access to the legacy Video AI product, and whether the latest features or models are available in the newer subscription product. The 2025 announcement supports the licensing distinction at launch; it does not establish current subscription prices or the present feature list.

What to check before relying on a model

Topaz’s legacy Starlight documentation describes a workflow with specific resource demands, cloud processing, output and codec constraints, and possible problems with tiny or inconsistent text. It advises deinterlacing interlaced footage before enhancement. These are cautions documented for that Starlight workflow, not universal limits of every model or necessarily current behavior. Topaz’s legacy Starlight documentation

  • Identify the exact model and release state. Check whether Topaz calls it beta, preview, or early access, rather than assuming the application as a whole has that status.
  • Confirm where processing happens. Starlight’s February 2025 launch required cloud processing; other options may differ by model, tier, and hardware.
  • Check the footage against model-specific constraints. For the legacy Starlight workflow, review format, output, and text-related cautions, and deinterlace interlaced material before enhancement as the documentation advises.
  • Verify current entitlements and costs. Preview counts, render limits, and introductory credits from a launch announcement should not be treated as standing terms.

So, is Topaz Video Enhance AI still early access?

Not as a blanket description supported by the available release history. Video Enhance AI explicitly supported beta models in 2021, and Starlight went through research-preview and early-access phases in 2025. Those facts support describing particular features and workflows as experimental or staged. They do not establish that all of legacy Video AI—or the newer Topaz Video product—is universally early access today. The most accurate assessment is model-specific: check the status, processing route, constraints, and license for the feature you intend to use.
