There is no single best Node.js framework: the right choice depends on whether you value compatibility, a strongly structured application architecture, low overhead, or features integrated into one stack. Express is the broad-compatibility default; NestJS suits teams seeking consistent architecture across application types; Fastify targets low overhead; Koa is a minimal middleware foundation; hapi emphasizes explicit extension points and security; and AdonisJS bundles common product features.

Compare the leading Node.js frameworks

Framework Architecture and ecosystem TypeScript, validation, and API documentation Performance evidence Built-in features and application modes
Express Large installed base and broad compatibility; relatively few architectural conventions. Specific validation and API-documentation capabilities are not stated in the supplied framework details. 59,651 requests/second in Fastify contributors’ illustrative single-instance comparison of Express 5.2.1, updated September 2, 2026; not a universal capacity figure. HTTP framework; does not impose a broad application architecture.
NestJS Opinionated modules, dependency injection, and conventions for consistent service architecture. Supports TypeScript and JavaScript. Specific validation and API-documentation details are not stated in the supplied framework details. Not included in the cited Fastify benchmark. HTTP APIs, microservices, WebSockets, GraphQL, cron jobs, and CLI applications.
Fastify Designed for low overhead; ecosystem and migration-risk comparisons are not stated in the supplied framework details. Specific TypeScript, validation, and API-documentation details are not stated in the supplied framework details. 97,595 requests/second for Fastify 5.12.1 in the same illustrative single-instance comparison. HTTP services; other built-in application modes are not stated in the supplied framework details.
Koa Small, composable async middleware core; teams choose and assemble middleware themselves. Specific TypeScript, validation, and API-documentation details are not stated in the supplied framework details. Not included in the cited Fastify benchmark. Web applications and APIs; middleware is intentionally not bundled into core.
hapi Predictable routing, mature plugins, and explicit extension points for larger teams. Validation is among its stated capabilities; specific TypeScript and API-documentation details are not stated in the supplied framework details. Not included in the cited Fastify benchmark. Full out-of-the-box functionality and a request lifecycle designed for extensibility.
AdonisJS Conventional, integrated TypeScript application stack rather than a collection of separately selected packages. TypeScript framework; validation is integrated. Specific API-documentation details are not stated in the supplied framework details. Not included in the cited Fastify benchmark. Authentication, ORM, validation, mail, queues, cache, and testing.

The performance figures are from the Fastify contributors’ benchmark page, updated September 2, 2026, and compare Fastify 5.12.1 with Express 5.2.1 in an illustrative single-instance test. The page warns that hardware, Node.js version, and workload affect results. Treat these figures as directional, not as a forecast for your application.

How to choose a framework

Start with the shape of your application

For a conventional HTTP API, any of these options may work; the deciding factors are often the team’s preferred structure and the packages or features the application needs. If one codebase may also need microservices, WebSockets, or GraphQL, NestJS explicitly supports those modes alongside HTTP APIs. If integrated product capabilities such as authentication, an ORM, mail, queues, caching, and testing are more important than choosing each component independently, AdonisJS is designed for that approach.

Account for team habits and migration cost

Existing Express applications and teams familiar with its ecosystem may prefer to stay with Express rather than accept the migration and retraining cost of a different architecture. NestJS gives teams more conventions and dependency injection, which can help keep multiple services structurally consistent but asks developers to work within its patterns. Koa takes the opposite approach: its small core leaves more decisions to the team, including middleware selection and composition.

Decide how much to assemble yourself

A small core is not the same as a complete application stack. Koa deliberately leaves middleware out of core, offering control at the cost of selecting and maintaining the surrounding pieces. AdonisJS integrates a range of common product features. hapi takes another route, offering mature plugins, validation, predictable routing, and a defined request lifecycle rather than requiring every concern to be improvised.

What the benchmark can—and cannot—tell you

In the published illustrative test, Fastify 5.12.1 handled 97,595 requests per second and Express 5.2.1 handled 59,651. That is evidence about those versions under that test’s particular conditions, not a ranking of every route, deployment, or workload. The benchmark page itself notes that results vary with hardware, Node.js version, and workload.

For a capacity decision, benchmark representative routes in your own environment: include the real request and response sizes, validation, database or network calls, authentication, and middleware your service uses. Measure latency as well as throughput, and compare equivalent configurations. A framework-level test that excludes the work dominating your production requests cannot establish the capacity you will achieve in production.

Version and support details to check

Express 5

Express 5 was published on October 15, 2024, and drops support for Node.js versions before 18. It handles rejected promises from middleware and changes route-pattern rules. Teams upgrading from Express 4 should review the Express migration guide for route changes and other compatibility details before deployment.

Express remains the usage leader in the State of JavaScript back-end survey. The displayed survey is the 2025 edition with historical data; that finding does not establish a 2024 market-share percentage.

Koa

Koa’s documentation requires Node.js 18 or higher. Its async-function middleware design and intentionally small core make it a better fit when the team wants to choose how the rest of the stack is assembled.

hapi

hapi highlights secure defaults, plugin maturity, validation, and predictable routing. Treat broad vendor statements such as “100% code coverage” as project claims, not guarantees about every version or your application; verify the version you deploy and its relevant behavior.

Framework choice by priority

  • Compatibility and an established ecosystem: choose Express when its low-convention approach and broad installed base suit the project; review the Express 5 migration implications if upgrading.
  • Consistent structure across services: choose NestJS when modules, dependency injection, and support for several application modes match the team’s needs.
  • Low framework overhead: choose Fastify when throughput is a concern, then test representative routes before making capacity decisions.
  • Minimal, composable middleware: choose Koa when the team wants control over middleware choices and is prepared to assemble the surrounding stack.
  • Explicit lifecycle and plugin governance: choose hapi when its validation and predictable extension model fit the service and team.
  • Integrated product features: choose AdonisJS when its bundled authentication, ORM, validation, mail, queues, cache, and testing reduce the amount of stack assembly you want to manage.
