It combines excellent stabilization, 5.3K60 video, flexible 8:7 capture, GPS, a removable Enduro battery and a mature helmet-mount ecosystem. Choose the GoPro MAX2 if you want to record in every direction and reframe later, the HERO12 Black for a substantial discount, the LIT HERO for the lightest simple setup, or the MISSION 1 PRO for premium low-light and cinematic production.
The right choice depends less on the largest resolution number than on mounting position, wind audio, battery strategy, low-light needs and how much editing you will tolerate.

Which type of motorcycle footage are you making?
Forward-facing POV
A conventional HERO camera records what it is aimed at. That produces the simplest files and the least editing. HERO13 is the default; HERO12 is the value alternative and LIT HERO is the lightest compromise.
#1 Best Overall

Reframed 360 footage
MAX2 records the entire sphere so you can select the view afterward. It is excellent when the camera cannot be aimed precisely, but 8K 360 is not equivalent to an 8K forward-facing image: a reframed view uses only part of the sphere, and heavy crops reduce effective detail.
Cinematic production
MISSION 1 PRO’s one-inch sensor, open-gate modes, higher-end audio and continuous-power options suit creators who grade and edit footage. Its narrower native view and larger body do not automatically make it a better helmet camera than HERO13.
Incident or ride documentation
Prioritize dependable recording, stable mounting, adequate power, easy file retrieval and date/time or GPS data where available. Preserve original files and metadata. A camera is not a certified dashcam and footage does not by itself establish fault; recording, privacy and helmet-mount rules vary by jurisdiction.

Starting settings
- Daylight POV: 4K60 for smooth motion and manageable storage.
- Maximum crop or frame extraction: 5.3K60, accepting larger files and greater heat.
- Lower light: 5.3K30 or 4K30 when motion does not require 60 fps.
- Mixed social output: 8:7 capture, then crop deliberately for widescreen or vertical delivery.
Mounting, audio and limitations
A full-face helmet chin mount usually gives the most natural perspective with less leverage than a tall top mount. Shell shape, chin-bar geometry, visor movement and the helmet maker’s instructions determine whether a mount is appropriate. Built-in microphones can be overwhelmed by turbulent air, so serious narration needs a protected helmet microphone or separate audio track.
HERO13 is not a major sensor-generation leap over HERO12, and it is not the strongest night camera. Its total cost rises when you add lens mods, spare batteries, mounts, memory cards and audio hardware. Verdict: the safest all-round recommendation for most riders.
2. GoPro MAX2: best for 360 coverage
Why it suits riders
- True 8K 360 capture, 5.6K60, 4K100 360 slow motion and 4K60 single-lens recording.
- 360 Horizon Lock keeps the horizon level when the camera rotates.
- Replaceable optical-glass lenses reduce repair cost compared with a permanently damaged camera, but remain vulnerable while riding.
- Standard GoPro fingers, a 1/4-20 thread and magnetic mounting support motorcycle and pole rigs.
- Six microphones, stereo recording, wind-noise reduction and Bluetooth audio support are useful starting points for narration, but helmet testing at real speeds is essential.
- GoPro specifies V30 or UHS-3-class microSD media; use a reputable card from its current compatibility list.
Read the official MAX2 specifications. Independent testing found low-light performance particularly weak; see Cycling Weekly’s review.
Mounting advice
Both lenses need a clear view. A poorly chosen helmet position may record the rider or helmet, and an extension pole adds vibration, snag and impact risk. Forward bike mounts, rear-facing mounts and carefully positioned poles are often more useful than a casual chin mount.

- 4K Ultra HD action camera: Professional 4K30Fps & 2.7K30Fps video with 20MP photos at up to 30 frames per second for incredible photos, which is 4 times the resolution of traditional HD cameras.
- Smooth Stabilization: Built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) delivers steady and smooth videos. It can enable excellent footage even you or the object is in fast-moving.
- 131ft waterproof camera: AKASO EK7000 is designed to withstand extreme environments, together with durable waterproof case. With the accessories, transform it for indoor and outdoor activities.
- Wireless wrist remote control sports camera: With a wrist 2.4G remote, you can capture the world in an all-new way. Controlling the camera, framing shots or recording video is convenient. (THE REMOTE IS NOT WATERPROOF)
- Built-in Wi-Fi, edit & share your action in minutes: Just download App(AKASO GO) on your phone or tablet and connect with this action camera. Wi-Fi signal ranges up to 10 meters. MicroSD card is not included.
Workflow and limitations
MAX2 footage normally passes through reframing and tracking in Quik before it becomes a conventional view. That adds storage, editing time and potential detail loss. Lens guards and a protective case are sensible for transport, and careful optical cleaning matters because scratches affect stitching across multiple angles. Verdict: choose it when framing flexibility matters more than immediate, clean forward-facing files.
3. GoPro HERO12 Black: best value full-size HERO
HERO12 retains a familiar body, removable battery, broad accessory support, 5.3K-class video and HyperSmooth 6.0. It is the logical buy when it costs materially less than HERO13 and you do not need HERO13’s newer battery, connectivity, magnetic latch, HB-Series lenses or telemetry workflow.
Check GPS and data-overlay requirements for the exact regional model and firmware before purchase. Buying HERO12 at nearly the same price as HERO13 removes its main advantage. The official HERO12 page has the current model information. Verdict: a strong value or secondary camera when the discount is substantial.
4. GoPro LIT HERO: best lightweight option
What you gain
- 4K60 recording, 4:3 video, a 165-degree lens and 12-megapixel stills.
- A small body weighing approximately 3.2 ounces in Tom’s Guide testing.
- Built-in LED with three brightness levels, magnetic mounting, integrated fingers, a 1/4-20 thread and a replaceable lens cover.
- 5-meter waterproofing when doors and seals are correctly closed.
See the official LIT HERO page and Tom’s Guide testing.
Rank #4
- Ultra Compact Design Weighs Only 86g: With 35% less volume and 44% less mass than HERO12 Black, HERO is small and light enough to follow you on any adventure. Carry it in your pocket, in your pack or capture body- and gear-mounted shots or handheld footage on the go.
- Rugged + Waterproof to 16ft (5m): Completely waterproof and built with legendary GoPro durability, HERO is ready to capture the fun whether you’re ripping through mud, snow or water (down to 16ft/5m) or just exploring nature or a new city.
- Super Simple Controls: HERO makes capturing breathtaking GoPro footage incredibly easy—just frame your shot and hit the Shutter button for amazing results.
- Stunning Image Quality: HERO captures the action in ultra HD 4K video while also taking 12MP photos. You can also grab 8MP photos of your favorite shots from your videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- What's Included: HERO Camera, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB C-C Cable
Important compromises
Stabilization is applied in Quik rather than fully baked into the camera file, and the battery is fixed. There is no external microphone support, making serious helmet narration difficult. The LED can help with close or stationary subjects but cannot replace a motorcycle headlight at road distance. Verdict: an appealing minimalist camera for short rides, not the best tool for touring, multi-hour recording or audio-heavy vlogging.
5. GoPro MISSION 1 PRO: best premium creator camera
Why creators may choose it
- One-inch sensor, GP3 processor, 8K60, 8K open-gate 4:3, 4K120 and 50-megapixel stills.
- Designed for improved low-light performance compared with smaller-sensor action cameras.
- 32-bit float audio, USB-C audio, GPS overlays and log/HDR-oriented production options.
- 2,150 mAh Enduro 2 battery, fast charging, improved thermal design and up to five hours of continuous recording under GoPro’s stated conditions.
- 20-meter waterproof rating on the current product-family page and a magnetic door/cable kit for continuous USB-C power.
Consult the MISSION 1 series page. The camera’s larger body, narrower native view and more demanding workflow make it better suited to a bike rig or professional setup than an everyday chin mount. Digital Camera World’s comparison likewise distinguishes its creator role from HERO13’s POV role. Verdict: the premium choice when sensor performance, audio and production control justify the cost and size.
Which one should you buy?
- Best helmet-chin POV: HERO13 Black.
- Record everything and choose angles later: MAX2.
- Full-size HERO at a meaningful discount: HERO12 Black.
- Minimum helmet weight: LIT HERO.
- Night, cinematic or professional work: MISSION 1 PRO, with adequate motorcycle lighting.
- Helmet narration: favor HERO13, MAX2 or MISSION 1 PRO with a tested protected microphone; LIT HERO cannot accept an external mic.
- Several hours of riding: choose a removable-battery model, spare batteries and a regulated USB-C supply.
Mounting positions and their consequences
| Position | Strength | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet chin | Natural POV and generally less leverage than a top mount | Fit depends on shell and chin-bar shape; check manufacturer guidance |
| Helmet top | High, unobstructed view | More drag, leverage and snag exposure |
| Handlebar | Shows controls and road ahead | Transmits engine and road vibration |
| Tank | Stable bike-centered composition | May show too much motorcycle |
| Crash bar or frame | Dramatic low angle | Debris, impact and vibration exposure |
| Rear-facing | Traffic context and follow shots | Requires a second camera or deliberate framing |
| 360 pole | Creative third-person views | Snag, clearance and structural risks; secure every joint |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio that survives motorcycle wind
- Place a microphone inside the helmet near your mouth, away from direct airflow.
- Add a suitable windscreen or helmet-specific cover.
- Record tests at idle, urban speed and highway speed with the visor in its normal position.
- Check intercom, Bluetooth and phone interference rather than assuming compatibility.
- For engine sound, use a protected microphone nearer the motorcycle; for narration, use the helmet mic.
- If the camera cannot accept your microphone, record a separate track and create a sync sound at the start.
Built-in microphones may be acceptable for casual clips, but no specification guarantees clear speech at your riding speed. MAX2’s Bluetooth and six-microphone system offers more paths; LIT HERO’s lack of external input is a decisive limitation for vloggers.
Best Value
- The Perfect Entry-Level GoPro: Simplified controls let you easily tap and swipe between video, photo and slo-mo modes
- Rugged + Waterproof to 16ft (5m): Completely waterproof and built with legendary GoPro durability, LIT HERO is ready to capture the fun whether you’re ripping through mud, snow or water (down to 16ft/5m) or just exploring nature or a new city.
- Built-in Light: LIT HERO’s built-in light can help you illuminate scenes that need a little more light or capture shots in total darkness. It features 3 brightness settings and even works when your camera is off or when it’s plugged in and charging.
- Stunning Image Quality: LIT HERO captures the action in ultra HD 4K video while bumping the frame rate up to 60 frames per second for more fluid motion and the ability to play back video in 2x slow motion. You can also take 12MP photos and grab photos up to 11MP from your videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- What’s Included: LIT HERO Camera, Light Diffuser, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
Battery, USB power and heat
- Use a regulated motorcycle USB-C source and route the cable away from steering movement, hot exhaust, suspension travel and pinch points.
- Do not treat a camera as waterproof with a power door open; inspect the exact door and cable system.
- Carry a spare battery for HERO13, HERO12, MAX2 or MISSION 1 PRO. LIT HERO must be recharged or externally powered because its battery is fixed.
- Advertised runtimes are test benchmarks. Resolution, frame rate, GPS, Wi-Fi, screen brightness, stabilization, ambient temperature and airflow all change endurance.
- High resolution, direct sun and stationary recording increase overheating risk. Turn the screen off after setup, use 4K60 when 5.3K is unnecessary, and test the exact configuration before a long trip.
Memory cards and file handling
- Use a reputable high-endurance card from GoPro’s current compatibility list; MAX2 specifies V30 or UHS-3 media.
- Format the card in the camera after backing up footage.
- Test the exact card at the chosen resolution and frame rate, and carry a spare.
- Do not remove a card while recording or rely on a nearly full card for a critical ride.
- 8K and high-bitrate 360 files consume storage much faster than conventional 4K footage.
Low-light riding and night safety
MISSION 1 PRO is the strongest design choice for low light because of its one-inch sensor. Independent testing identifies HERO13 and especially MAX2 as weaker in dark conditions. Lower frame rate when appropriate, avoid unnecessarily aggressive digital stabilization, and test headlights and license-plate rendering on a controlled route. A brighter recording is not automatically a more accurate one, and no camera compensates for inadequate motorcycle lighting or unsafe riding conditions.
Reliability and failure prevention
Vibration and jello
Use a short rigid mount, tighten every joint, inspect adhesive bases after rough sections and consider vibration damping for handlebar installations. Stabilization cannot repair severe mechanical vibration or a loose lens cover.
Wind noise
Protect the microphone, keep helmet vents from blasting it directly and test the visor position you actually ride with. Wind-reduction processing can distort speech or engine sound.
360 lens damage
Use compatible lens guards during vulnerable rides, transport MAX2 in a protective case and clean optics with appropriate materials. Scratches appear across stitched viewpoints.
Recommended Free Tools
Missed framing
A conventional HERO cannot recover a subject outside its field of view. MAX2 can reframe only what its lenses captured, with sufficient detail remaining after the crop.
Safety, privacy and evidence
- Follow the helmet manufacturer’s mounting instructions and local helmet laws.
- Set up and start recording before moving; do not operate a camera or remote in a distracting way while riding.
- Preserve original files, back them up promptly and keep metadata where possible instead of relying only on an edited or reframed export.
- Check local privacy, traffic-recording and data-protection rules before recording other people or publishing footage.
- Water resistance applies only with intact seals and closed doors, within the specified depth and conditions; impacts, pressure, spray and damaged seals can defeat it.
Useful accessories and services
A complete motorcycle system may include a chin or bike mount, spare batteries and charger, high-endurance microSD cards, lens protection, wind protection, a regulated USB-C adapter and a secure cable. GoPro’s The Remote is specified on the powersports page for control up to 196 feet (60 meters) and up to five cameras, but it should never distract from riding.
The optional GoPro Subscription currently highlights cloud backup, Quik tools, discounts and camera-replacement benefits; fees, eligibility, replacement charges and country terms apply. It is most useful for travelers who value automatic backup, less so for riders with their own backup system.
