Both Tokyo Ghoul and Choujin X are supernatural manga by Sui Ishida, but they center on different transformations and different kinds of conflict. Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki as he becomes a human-Ghoul hybrid and tries to survive within a hidden society of flesh-eating ghouls. Choujin X begins with friends Tokio and Azuma attacked by a superhuman, after which Tokio becomes a choujin. They are separate series; official listings identify the same creator but do not establish a shared continuity.

What do Tokyo Ghoul and Choujin X have in common?

Each series starts from a recognizable human life disrupted by supernatural change. VIZ describes Kaneki as an ordinary college student before he becomes half human and half Ghoul; in Choujin X, Tokio’s transformation follows an attack that also involves his friend Azuma. In both, becoming something nonordinary changes how the protagonist must navigate the world.

That is the useful point of comparison—not an indication that the beings, rules, or stories are interchangeable. Ghouls and choujin belong to distinct premises, and Ishida has described different creative aims for the two works.

How are the transformations and supernatural worlds different?

Tokyo Ghoul: survival among ghouls

VIZ describes ghouls as creatures who live among ordinary people but crave human flesh. After a violent encounter leaves Kaneki a half-human, half-Ghoul hybrid, he has to learn Ghoul society, contend with turf wars, and master new powers. The premise makes bodily change inseparable from survival and the question of where Kaneki belongs.

Choujin X: a broader superhuman premise

VIZ introduces Tokio and Azuma as best friends who are attacked by a superhuman mutant called a choujin; Tokio then becomes one himself. Rather than centering its publisher synopsis on a hidden species defined by a need for human flesh, the series opens with transformation into a superhuman being. Ishida has said he wanted a more flexible ability system than the combat transformations he used in Tokyo Ghoul.

How do the tone and settings compare?

VIZ explicitly describes Choujin X as combining “dark humor and quirky horror.” Its Tokyo Ghoul synopsis instead foregrounds human flesh, conflict between ghouls, and Kaneki’s violent transformation. That supports a contrast in how the publisher frames their entry points, not a definitive ranking of either series’ tone or quality.

The settings also reflect a stated design choice by Ishida. He has said that familiar, real-world backdrops reduce the amount of setting rules he needs to explain. Tokyo Ghoul uses Tokyo; Choujin X uses a fictional city that retains familiar elements. This does not mean their worlds operate by the same rules.

What did Ishida say he wanted to try with each series?

Ishida has said that Tokyo Ghoul began with the idea of a protagonist who might be called a menace to society. For Choujin X, he traced the early concept to an interest in kanji etymology and described wanting more flexible abilities and a more conventional manga structure. He called it “basically my attempt at writing something completely by-the-book.” These are his descriptions of creative intent, not an objective verdict on which series works better.

He has also described a general approach to chapter writing: “I try to leave the reader with the impression that they’ve seen some real development, even in chapters with heavy exposition. Battle-focused chapters, too, would be boring if they were comprised solely of fighting sequences, so I always try to find a way to express a character’s inner feelings, like through emotional exchanges.” This is a statement about his approach to chapters, not a direct comparison of the two manga.

Are the series related, or is one better?

The official sources cited here identify both as works by Sui Ishida; they do not say the manga share a continuity. Read them as separate series rather than as a sequel and its predecessor. The sources also provide no comparative metric that establishes one as objectively better or more popular, so the more useful choice is the premise, tone, and story status you prefer.
