A toaster oven is usually the practical choice for toast, reheating, and small portions; a conventional full-size oven is better when a dish needs more room, height, or multiple trays. For a fair energy comparison, look at watt-hours used to cook the same food to the same result—not the appliances’ wattage ratings alone. Test results show toaster ovens can use less energy for some small cooking tasks, but the difference depends on the appliance and the job.

What is the difference between a toaster oven and a conventional oven?

Both appliances heat food in an enclosed cooking chamber, typically using upper and lower heating elements, temperature controls, and sometimes a convection fan. Many can bake, roast, or broil. Their main practical difference is the size and layout of the cooking space, along with model-specific features and heating systems.

A toaster oven sits on a countertop and has a smaller cavity. A conventional oven is generally part of a range or built into a kitchen and offers more usable space. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines a conventional oven for appliance standards as a household appliance with one or more compartments heated by a gas flame or electric resistance. Its regulatory definition excludes portable or countertop electric-resistance ovens designed for approximately 120 volts. That distinction is regulatory; in everyday use, people may call countertop baking appliances small ovens. DOE’s conventional cooking products page explains the definition and standards context.

Which oven is better for your cooking?

Cooking need Usually the better fit Why
Toast, reheating, a pizza slice, or a small side dish Toaster oven The compact chamber suits small batches and avoids heating a much larger cooking space.
A tall casserole, large roast, or whole turkey Conventional oven Greater usable height and capacity make it easier to fit larger dishes.
Several trays or a larger meal Conventional oven More rack positions and space can accommodate multiple pans or larger batches.
A small batch of baked food Depends on the model and recipe Check usable dimensions, rack placement, temperature control, and whether the food browns evenly before the center is done.

Capacity varies substantially across countertop models. In RTINGS’ tested group, countertop ovens ranged from a one-slice mini oven to a model that could fit two 9-by-13-inch pans; its tested full-size oven accommodated multiple full-size pans. These are examples from that test group, not specifications for all ovens. Before using a toaster oven for a full-size-oven recipe, check that the dish fits with adequate clearance and monitor doneness instead of assuming the same rack position or cooking time will work.

Which uses less energy?

For a small task, a toaster oven may use less energy because it heats a smaller chamber and can take less time to preheat. But a lower wattage rating alone does not prove an appliance will use less energy for a particular meal: energy depends on power over time. The most useful comparison is watt-hours (Wh) for the same food, quantity, and finished result.

What one 2025 comparison measured

RTINGS’ comparative tests, updated February 24, 2025, measured specific appliances and cooking tasks. In its baking-cycle comparison, the Frigidaire Gallery GCRE306CBF full-size oven used 600 Wh. The Black+Decker Natural Convection 4-Slice TO1756SB toaster oven used 127 Wh, or 21.2% of the full-size oven’s measured energy in that test. Across RTINGS’ tested toaster ovens, the baking-cycle average was 183 Wh, or 30.5% of that full-size oven’s measured energy.

  • FOUR VERSATILE COOKING FUNCTIONS – Select from baking, broiling, toasting, or keeping food warm. Natural convection airflow circulates heat throughout the oven—preheat for 10 minutes to ensure consistent cooking and crisp results.
  • PRECISION 30-MINUTE TIMER WITH STAY-ON OPTION – The 30-minute timer includes clearly marked toast settings and a stay-on function. Oven will not operate unless timer is set or stay-on is selected, ensuring controlled and safe operation.
  • CONVENIENT REMOVABLE CRUMB TRAY – The slide-out crumb tray allows for quick, hygienic cleanup. To prevent spills and overheating, keep food and bakeware at least 1½ inches from the top heating elements and fully contained within the tray.
  • COMPACT AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN – Measuring 14.5" x 10.8" x 8.8", this sleek stainless steel toaster oven complements any kitchen. Outer surfaces become hot during use—always use oven mitts and allow space for proper ventilation.

For preheating to 350°F, RTINGS measured 420 Wh for the full-size oven and an average of 60 Wh for the tested toaster ovens. Average preheat times were 12 minutes for full-size ovens and 3 minutes 48 seconds for toaster ovens; a large countertop combi oven was an exception at 9 minutes 27 seconds. These are results for RTINGS’ tested appliances and methods, not a guarantee for other models or recipes. See RTINGS’ toaster-oven testing and comparisons for its test context.

Results vary by cooking task

The same test set illustrates why there is no single energy-saving percentage for every use. In RTINGS’ air-frying tests, the Frigidaire full-size oven used 960 Wh, the toaster-oven average was 420 Wh, and basket-style air fryers averaged 245 Wh. For toast, RTINGS found the tested full-size oven used about twice the energy of the toaster oven for equivalent batches; a slot toaster averaged 76 Wh for four slices.

RTINGS says its tested toaster ovens used 30–80% less energy across the tasks it analyzed. That range describes those tests, not every toaster oven, conventional oven, recipe, or household. An ENERGY STAR scoping report summarizes an estimate from industry representatives that toaster ovens use about one-third to one-half less energy than a conventional electric oven for small meals; it is an industry-representative estimate, not a universal government test result. North Dakota State University Extension also recommends considering small appliances such as toaster ovens for small meals as a potential energy-saving measure, without providing a quantified head-to-head result.

When might the energy advantage shrink?

A toaster oven is not automatically the more efficient option for every meal. If the smaller cavity forces you to cook several rounds, or if both appliances are already hot, the comparison can change. The cited measurements do not quantify every batch-cooking or preheated-oven scenario, so treat these as practical factors rather than measured savings.

  • Batch size: Compare the space required with the oven’s usable capacity. Multiple rounds in a small appliance may change the total energy and time.
  • Preheating: For a short cooking task, preheating time can matter because it adds to the total time the appliance is operating.
  • Fit and clearance: A dish that sits too close to a heating element may brown or burn on the outside before it cooks through.
  • Baking performance: For cookies, bread, and other sensitive bakes, usable height, rack position, heat distribution, and temperature stability matter alongside capacity.
  • Kitchen space: A toaster oven needs counter space and suitable clearance; a conventional oven has a larger permanent footprint but does not occupy the countertop.

How to choose the right oven for a task

  1. Start with the food and portion. For toast, reheating, or a small side, check whether a toaster oven can hold the food comfortably. For large dishes or multiple trays, check the full-size oven’s usable capacity.
  2. Check the actual cavity dimensions. Compare the dish’s height and width with the oven’s interior, allowing room for airflow and safe placement away from heating elements.
  3. Consider the complete cooking cycle. For a short task, include preheating time and energy in your comparison. For multiple rounds, consider the whole batch rather than a single tray.
  4. For energy, compare like with like. Use reliable watt-hour measurements for the same food, portion, and result when they are available. Do not infer energy use from rated wattage alone.
  5. For baking, prioritize control and evenness. Look for suitable rack positions, enough usable height, and stable temperature control for the foods you bake.

What DOE’s cooking standards do—and do not—tell you

DOE’s 2024 standards for residential conventional cooking products require newly manufactured covered models to comply beginning January 31, 2028. The department projected about $1.6 billion in consumer utility-bill savings over 30 years from the standards. This is a projection for the standards overall, not an estimate of savings from an individual toaster oven. The announcement covers residential ranges and stand-alone cooktops and ovens, while DOE’s regulatory definition excludes qualifying countertop ovens. See DOE’s January 29, 2024 standards announcement.
