Neither TJ Hughes nor B&M is consistently the cheapest across every category. B&M is usually the more natural first stop for routine grocery and general-merchandise shopping, while TJ Hughes can be especially worthwhile for branded department-store lines, homeware, beauty products and clearance deals. The reliable way to decide is to compare the identical brand, model, size and pack count, then add travel or delivery costs.
This is a UK comparison. Prices, stock and promotions change by branch and channel, so any result should carry its date, location and whether it came from a shop or an online listing.
The short answer: choose by basket, not by chain
A retailer-wide winner does not exist. Discount stores build value in different ways, and a basket that is cheapest at one chain can be more expensive at the other when you change category, brand, pack size or promotion.
- Start with B&M when your list is mainly everyday grocery and general merchandise.
- Check TJ Hughes when you want branded department-store products, homeware, beauty, fashion, seasonal goods or clearance lines.
- Use an identical-SKU comparison for a defensible answer. A different slow cooker capacity, cleaning-product size or multipack is not a like-for-like result.
- Calculate total cost, including transport, delivery and any minimum-order charge, rather than relying only on the shelf ticket.
TJ Hughes says it offers branded and quality goods at discounts of up to 80% off recommended retail price (RRP). That is the retailer’s stated maximum claim, not a promise that every item or every branch is discounted by 80%. B&M describes its model as direct sourcing from manufacturers and leading household brands to offer compelling prices, while warning that products are subject to availability.

These descriptions explain why a blanket verdict is misleading. A chain may be excellent for a category without being the best place for every individual product in it. A clearance line can also be cheaper for a short period without representing the retailer’s normal price.
What “cheaper” should mean
Match the product exactly
For a meaningful comparison, record the same manufacturer, product name, model number, capacity or dimensions, pack count and variant. Fragrance, colour and included accessories can change the specification and price. For appliances, the model number is more reliable than a similar-looking photograph.
If an identical item is unavailable, mark it as unavailable. Do not silently replace a 3.5-litre appliance with a 5-litre version or a six-pack with a four-pack and call the result a saving.

Convert multipacks and different sizes
Compare the price per item, per 100 grams or per litre when pack sizes differ. The basic calculations are:
- Price per item = pack price ÷ number of items.
- Price per 100 g = pack price ÷ total grams × 100.
- Price per litre = pack price ÷ total litres.
Unit pricing does not make different formulations identical, but it exposes when a larger-looking pack is not actually better value. Record the original pack size alongside the unit result so a reader can see what was compared.
Separate normal prices from special offers
Label every observation as a regular shelf price, clearance price, limited-time promotion or channel-specific offer. A clearance ticket may be an excellent one-off purchase but cannot support a claim that one chain is always cheaper. Note the date because promotions and stock can change quickly.

A repeatable 10–15-item basket test
A small, mixed basket is more useful than comparing one attractive bargain. Include products you genuinely buy, and keep the list fixed while checking both retailers.

- Write the basket before visiting. Choose 10–15 items and specify the brand, model, size, capacity, pack count or acceptable variant. Include a mixture of the categories you actually shop for.
- Create a recording sheet. Use columns for retailer, branch or online channel, product name, exact SKU or barcode, pack size, shelf price, promotion, stock status and date.
- Check the same channel conditions. A shop price and an online delivered price are not directly equivalent. Record whether each figure is in-store, collection or delivery.
- Verify the specification. Read the product description and packaging. For appliances, capture the exact model and capacity; for consumables, capture weight, volume and count.
- Calculate a comparable unit price. Apply the per-item, per-100g or per-litre calculation where pack sizes differ.
- Record missing items honestly. Enter “unavailable” rather than substituting a different size, brand or model.
- Add acquisition costs. Include delivery, minimum-order charges, parking, public transport, fuel or the incremental cost of a special trip.
- Classify the result. Mark which lines are regular prices and which depend on clearance or a time-limited offer.
- Repeat after a material promotion change. A changed price or a newly unavailable key item can alter the basket result, so rerun the calculation instead of carrying forward an old total.

Where B&M is more likely to make sense
Routine grocery and repeat household shopping
B&M’s stated focus on grocery and general merchandise makes it a logical first check for a standard essentials list. That does not prove every staple is cheaper there; it means the range is aligned with the type of repeat shopping where availability and a dependable shelf price matter as much as a one-off bargain.
For a regular basket, compare the same branded product and pack size whenever possible. If the brands differ, explain that you are comparing alternatives rather than proving a retailer price advantage. A lower ticket price can also reflect a smaller pack, a different formulation or a promotion that has ended.
General merchandise in one trip
When a list combines everyday consumables with basic household goods, B&M may reduce the need for multiple stops. Include the value of that convenience in your own decision, but do not convert it into a universal claim about price. A single trip is only cheaper if the avoided travel or delivery outweighs any higher item prices.
Where TJ Hughes is more likely to make sense
Branded and department-store-style lines
TJ Hughes specifically presents a broad branded and quality-goods offer spanning homeware, fashion, seasonal and beauty departments. Its catalogue also lists bedding, kitchen appliances, garden, toys, electrical goods, leisure, DIY and pet products. That breadth makes it worth checking when the brand, design or specification matters and a clearance or end-of-line price may be available.
Clearance and changing stock
Clearance is inherently variable. The item that makes TJ Hughes the better choice today may not be available tomorrow or online. Treat the price as a dated opportunity, not as evidence that all TJ Hughes products beat B&M. Confirm the exact branch or current listing before making a special journey.

Home appliances: compare the specification, not the headline
A current TJ Hughes home-sale catalogue lists a Daewoo Slow Cooker 3.5L at £27 and a Quest Slow Cooker 3.5L at £20. These prices were listed on 19 October 2026. They illustrate why model-level checking matters: both appliances have the same stated capacity, but they are different brands and models, so the figures do not establish a TJ Hughes-versus-B&M saving.

Use the named model as the search key when checking another retailer. Comparing a different capacity or a similar-looking slow cooker would answer a different question.
Availability: the hidden reason price comparisons fail
Store, warehouse and website are different channels
TJ Hughes says not every product sold in its stores is available online and that the online range depends on warehouse stock. B&M likewise states that products are subject to availability. Therefore, a website listing, a shelf ticket and a product seen in another branch are three separate observations.
Check before travelling
For a low-priced item, travel can erase the saving. Check the local branch where a stock checker is available, phone the store when practical, or confirm that the online listing can actually be ordered. Do not assume that a product shown in a catalogue is held at your nearest location.
Do not treat an unavailable line as a zero
In a basket calculation, an unavailable product is not free and should not be omitted without explanation. Report the number of matched items, the number unavailable and the channel checked. If the missing product is essential, the basket may not meet your needs even when the partial total looks lower.
Total cost: the shelf ticket is only one input
Use this calculation for each retailer:
Total acquisition cost = item prices + delivery or minimum-order charges + incremental travel cost

Incremental travel cost means the extra cost caused by shopping there, not the entire cost of a journey you would have made anyway. For example, if one shop is on your normal route, its additional travel cost may be close to zero; a special car trip to collect one clearance item is different.

- Include fuel, public transport and parking when a branch requires a separate trip.
- Consider whether a promotion encourages you to buy more than you need; unused products are not savings.
- Keep collection and delivery comparisons separate when the service costs differ.
A retailer can have the lower item subtotal but the higher final cost. Conversely, paying a little more per item may be rational if it avoids a second journey and the products are all available in one place.
How to make a fair branded-product comparison
- Start with the brand and model. Search or inspect packaging using the exact identifier, not a broad product name.
- Confirm size and included contents. Check capacity, dimensions, quantity, accessories and any variant such as fragrance or colour.
- Capture the price at the same time. Write down the date and whether the price is promotional or clearance.
- Check stock and fulfilment. An online price that cannot be delivered to your area is not an available alternative.
- Compare the final cost. Add delivery or travel, then decide whether the difference is large enough to justify another shop.
This method is particularly important for branded toiletries, cleaning products, storage, kitchen equipment and personal-care goods, where a similar package can hide a different quantity or formulation.

Comparing RRP with another retailer’s shelf price
TJ Hughes’s “up to 80% off RRP” statement compares selected goods with a recommended retail price. It does not tell you whether the same product is cheaper at B&M. Fix the problem by recording the current price for the identical SKU at both retailers.
Using a different model as a substitute
Two 3.5-litre slow cookers can have different controls, materials, accessories and warranty arrangements. Fix this by using the model number and listing the specifications that affect value.
Mixing clearance with regular prices
A clearance price may be temporary or branch-specific. Fix this by labelling the promotion type and reporting the date.

Ignoring unavailable stock
A low online price is not useful if the item cannot be delivered or collected. Fix this by recording availability separately from price.
Reporting a percentage saving without a basket test
No independently published, current like-for-like basket statistic establishes a general percentage saving for TJ Hughes over B&M or vice versa. Fix this by reporting your own dated basket, with its geography, channel, matched-item count and exclusions, rather than inventing a headline percentage.

A useful comparison states exactly what was measured. Include:

- Date and time of the check.
- Every matched product’s brand, model, size and pack count.
- Whether each price was regular, promotional or clearance.
- Unavailable products and any substitutions, clearly separated.
- Delivery, collection, travel and minimum-order costs.
- The basket subtotal, total acquisition cost and number of matched lines.
Use wording such as “B&M was lower for this dated 12-item basket in this location” rather than “B&M is always cheaper.” Conditions change, and a result that is accurate for one branch and date may not apply elsewhere.
Final verdict
Choose B&M as the first check for routine grocery and general-merchandise baskets, and check TJ Hughes when branded department-store goods, homeware, beauty, appliances or clearance lines are central to your list. Neither chain wins by default. The better value is the retailer with the lower total cost for the identical products you can actually obtain, on the date and in the UK location you are comparing.
