TiddlyWiki is a flexible personal wiki for capturing, organizing, and linking information—not a conventional notes app built around a fixed sequence of pages. It can run as a self-contained HTML file or as a Node.js application, with desktop and hosted routes also linked from the project’s site. The right setup depends on where you want your information stored, how you plan to save and sync it, and how much configuration you are willing to do.
What is TiddlyWiki?
TiddlyWiki is an interactive wiki and “non-linear personal web notebook.” Its content is organized as individually manageable pieces called tiddlers, which you can link and arrange into a structure that suits the subject. The project describes its purpose as “capturing, organising and sharing complex information.”
That makes it useful for varied projects: a to-do list, an essay or novel plan, wedding planning, collecting thoughts, or building a flexible website. Rather than imposing one workflow, TiddlyWiki gives you a system you can shape. That flexibility is a strength when your information does not fit a rigid notebook format, but it also means you may need to decide how your wiki should be organized.
The project’s homepage identifies TiddlyWiki v5.4.1 as the current release, dated 10 July 2026. See the official TiddlyWiki site for current release information.

Ways to use TiddlyWiki
The main choice is not simply where to install an app: it is how you want to store, access, and save your wiki.
| Setup | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single HTML file in a browser | People who want a portable wiki with its code and data together in one file. | You need a compatible way to save changes in your browser and on your platform. |
| Official desktop application | People who prefer a desktop app over managing a file or command line. | The official site links downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux; check its current platform support and availability before choosing it. |
| Tiddlyhost | People who want an online starting point rather than configuring local file saving. | Tiddlyhost is an independently run community service, not the TiddlyWiki project itself. Review its current terms and service details. |
| Node.js application | Advanced users and developers who want command-line or client/server operation. | Requires installing and configuring the runtime and application. |
The official project overview describes the single-file option as needing no installation or external dependencies. The project also documents a Node.js command-line application, including serving a wiki and building an offline HTML copy. Start with the official overview and installation documentation to compare the available routes.

How saving and syncing work
Choose a supported saving method before putting important information into a browser-based wiki. The official GettingStarted instructions explicitly warn: “Don’t attempt to use the browser File/Save menu option to save changes (it doesn’t work).” Saving behavior depends on your setup, browser, and platform, so verify that your chosen method works before relying on it.

Saving and syncing are different operations. A saver generates and stores a new HTML file. A sync mechanism synchronizes changes to individual tiddlers back to a server. Whether you need one or both depends on whether you want a portable file, access from multiple devices, or changes synchronized online. The official GettingStarted guide explains the initial setup, and the saving documentation covers saving and synchronization.
Customizing a wiki with plugins
Plugins are optional bundles that customize or extend a TiddlyWiki. The official documentation says they can include JavaScript modules, stylesheets, templates, text, images, and other content. Plugins can come from the official library or community sites.
