Neither is a universal winner for speed, image quality, or cost: the available official sources do not establish a head-to-head benchmark. If you are also considering screenshot services, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture and bills only clean shots.
Thumbalizr vs Puppeteer: the core difference
Thumbalizr is a hosted screenshot API built around sending a target URL and options to a service. Its Embed API is intended for generating website thumbnails that can be used on websites. You need API credentials, which Thumbalizr says are available after registering a free account. The API documentation describes status in HTTP response headers, including QUEUED, OK, or FAILED. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi. It runs headless by default, with a visible browser mode available. Screenshots are one capability among browser interaction, UI testing, form submission, tracing, PDF creation, and other automation tasks. The Puppeteer documentation displayed version 25.12.0 when reviewed. Puppeteer: What is Puppeteer?.
Which should you choose?
Choose Thumbalizr when
- Your application can request a screenshot by URL without first clicking through or otherwise interacting with the page.
- You want a hosted API and can work within the capture controls and plan entitlements it currently offers.
- You want published monthly quotas and prices to inform a service-plan decision.
Choose Puppeteer when
- The page must be manipulated before capture, such as through a scripted browser workflow.
- The screenshot is one step in a broader process such as UI testing, form submission, tracing, or PDF generation.
- You want to control a browser from your own JavaScript application and can choose and maintain its execution environment.
For a mixed workload, the choice can be per task: use an API for straightforward URL captures and browser automation where a page needs interaction. The sources establish the products’ operating models, not which will be faster or render a particular site more accurately. Test representative pages and requirements before committing.

What the 2026 Thumbalizr transition means
In an announcement dated April 8, 2026, Thumbalizr said it was moving its screenshot engine from Browshot to ScreenshotCenter in phases, starting with new accounts and then transitioning existing accounts in batches. The company said existing integrations, API calls, embeds, and settings should remain unchanged. Thumbalizr’s migration announcement.
The same announcement described more geographic locations, ad and popup filtering, video, PDF exports, and extended device emulation as features to be introduced progressively. Treat these as planned or rolling out unless current product documentation confirms availability for your account. Thumbalizr also describes the transition as bringing a current Firefox release compared with the older alternative previously available; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent rendering comparison. The announcement’s speed and reliability claims are not accompanied by measured benchmarks.
How to compare them on your own pages
- List the job. Record whether each target needs only a URL capture or must be clicked, filled in, or otherwise manipulated first.
- Choose representative pages. Include pages with the dynamic content, viewport needs, output format, and geographic requirements that matter to your workflow.
- Check Thumbalizr’s current options and plan. Confirm the required capture controls and entitlements in its API documentation and features and pricing.
- Build a Puppeteer trial around the actual workflow. Use the Puppeteer guide and Page.screenshot() reference; include any page interactions the production job needs rather than testing a bare screenshot alone.
- Compare what matters to your application. Check whether captures complete and meet your layout and output requirements, how status and failures are handled, and what your own operating costs would be. The available sources provide no universal speed or image-quality winner.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a hosted screenshot API rather than maintaining a browser workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first. It accepts one GET request for a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
