Its published controls and plan limits are clearer: free captures are watermarked and screen-only, while paid tiers add full-page capture and, at higher levels, larger viewports and custom delays.
What Thumbalizr does
Thumbalizr is a hosted service for taking website screenshots and embedding thumbnail images on a site. It offers a free API-key account, which its home page says does not require a credit card. Screenshot quality: what can be judged
The documentation establishes output and rendering controls, not a quality score. The API supports JPG and PNG, a JPEG quality setting from 10 to 100, a thumbnail width, and browser viewport dimensions. Those options let you choose file format, compression level, output width, and capture context, but they do not guarantee faithful rendering on every website.
Thumbalizr’s demo notes that its displayed sample thumbnail has been cropped. It therefore cannot establish the uncropped output dimensions or serve as a controlled comparison of image quality. The official material reviewed does not provide an independent fidelity test or a documented test set. Judge a trial capture against your own pages, especially if they use custom fonts, dynamic content, or complex layouts.

How fast and reliable is it?
There is no published benchmark establishing Thumbalizr’s typical latency, success rate, or performance across sites. On April 8, 2026, Thumbalizr announced a phased move from its Browshot-powered backend to ScreenshotCenter. The company said the change would make complex captures faster and reduce errors and timeouts through redundant, distributed cloud services, but supplied no before-and-after timings, sample size, or failure-rate data. The announcement is a vendor claim, not a measured comparison: Thumbalizr’s blog.
The API exposes status headers for QUEUED, OK, and FAILED, as well as generated-time and error headers. These help an integration distinguish a queued job, a successful result, and a failure; they are observability signals, not a promise that a capture will finish within a particular time or succeed.

Capture controls and practical constraints
Page area, watermark, and dimensions
- Free captures include a watermark, capture the visible screen rather than the entire page, and use a fixed 1280×1024 browser viewport.
- Silver removes the watermark and permits either screen or full-page capture, but retains the 1280×1024 viewport.
- Gold and Platinum support larger browser dimensions. The feature table gives tier-specific limits; do not assume Gold and Platinum share the same maximum height. Thumbnail-width ceilings are 1600 px for Gold and 2000 px for Platinum.
Delay and geography
The API accepts a delay parameter with a documented range of 1–30 seconds. The API table lists five seconds for Free and Silver; the demo describes custom delay as a Gold and Platinum feature. The API specifically documents US and Germany location options and says to contact the company about other locations. The demo’s broader “US or European browsers” wording does not establish additional country choices in the API.
Formats and status handling
Choose JPG or PNG; the JPEG quality parameter applies to JPEG output. The API’s status and error headers mean your integration should account for queued jobs and failed captures rather than treating every response as a finished image. Integration considerations
The Embed API uses an API key and a token derived from the query string and secret. Treat the secret as a credential: keep it on a server, not in public browser-side code. Encode the target URL and other parameters correctly; nested URL query strings are a common source of malformed requests. The documentation includes PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl, and Bash examples. Validate parameter behavior and any library support against the current documentation before deploying.
The API’s documented countries are limited to US and Germany, with other locations requiring a company inquiry. If capture geography matters for regional content or compliance, verify the available location before building around it.
Migration status and unconfirmed features
The April 8, 2026 announcement describes a phased move from Browshot to ScreenshotCenter and says existing integrations, API calls, embed codes, and settings remain unchanged. That is Thumbalizr’s migration assurance; the announcement does not independently confirm that every existing account has migrated. It also mentions video, PDF, broader geography, popup filtering, and extended device emulation as future possibilities.
