Throughput is how much data your internet connection can deliver per second; latency is how long video takes to travel from the live event to a viewer’s screen. A stream needs enough stable upload throughput to carry its encoded bitrate, but a fast connection does not by itself make a stream low-latency. Encoding, platform processing, network conditions and the viewer’s playback buffer all affect the delay.

Throughput and latency measure different things

Throughput: how much data gets through

Throughput is a data rate, commonly expressed in megabits per second (Mbps). For a live stream, the relevant connection direction is usually your upload rate: the encoder sends video and audio data to the platform, which then distributes it to viewers. The stream’s encoded bitrate must fit within the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably.

Latency: how long the video takes to arrive and play

For streaming, the useful measure is often glass-to-glass latency: the time between an event happening in front of a camera and the video playing on a viewer’s device. RFC 9317, published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in October 2022, distinguishes this from packet-level network latency. Glass-to-glass delay can include capture and encoding, platform ingest and processing, delivery, buffering, and decoding at the viewer’s end. RFC 9317

That is why a speed test’s ping result is not the same as the delay viewers experience. A low ping measures a network round trip under test conditions; it does not measure the full path from your camera or encoder through the streaming platform to a viewer’s player.

Why a stream can lag with fast internet

A high throughput result says the connection can move data quickly under the test’s conditions. It does not guarantee that the upload path will remain stable, that the platform will process the stream immediately, or that the viewer’s player will use a small buffer. Congestion and fluctuations can add delay even when average available bandwidth appears sufficient.

The player buffer trades speed for resilience

A playback buffer stores incoming video before showing it. A larger read-ahead buffer gives the player more room to absorb changes in delivery speed, which can reduce interruptions but puts playback further behind the live event. YouTube explains: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” Smaller buffers can make a stream feel more immediate, but leave less protection against a viewer’s variable connection. YouTube Help: live stream latency

Throughput shortfalls can create a different kind of lag

If your encoder sends data faster than the connection can carry it, frames may be delayed or dropped, or the stream may disconnect. This is a capacity or stability problem, not proof that the platform’s latency mode is too high. Conversely, a stream can have enough upload throughput and still reach viewers several seconds after the event because buffering and platform processing contribute to end-to-end delay.

How much upload speed does live streaming need?

Start with the encoder’s configured bitrate, then confirm that your stable upload capacity can carry it while leaving room for bitrate variation and other traffic on the connection. A platform’s recommended encoder bitrate is not a universal internet-speed requirement: real upload stability, competing household or production use, and the connection route matter too.

YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates, accessed in 2026, illustrate why codec and frame rate matter. These figures are encoder recommendations, not guaranteed minimum connection speeds; they refer to video bitrate, not total household bandwidth. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Output AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate H.264 recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

Audio, protocol overhead and other network use also consume capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, while OBS advises setting the stream bitrate below stable upload capacity. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting rule of thumb—not a guarantee or a universal sizing formula. The safe margin depends on your connection’s consistency and what else is using it. OBS: dropped frames and network issues

Codec efficiency changes the bitrate requirement

A more efficient codec can deliver similar visual quality at a lower bitrate, but only if your encoder, ingest path and viewers support it. YouTube’s HLS documentation says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more data compression than H.264 at the same video quality; that comparison is specific to the documentation’s stated codec context, not a promise that every stream will save a fixed amount. Google for Developers: YouTube HLS ingestion

What counts as low latency?

RFC 9317 offers rough categories rather than universal platform guarantees: ultra-low latency is under one second, low-latency live is under 10 seconds, and non-low-latency live ranges from 10 seconds to a few minutes. The RFC describes low-latency live delivery as having a glass-to-glass delay target under 10 seconds. Actual results depend on the platform, configuration, network and player. RFC 9317

YouTube’s guidance says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds in low-latency mode and less than five seconds in ultra-low-latency mode. These are platform guidance figures, not a guarantee for each viewer. YouTube says ultra-low latency can increase buffering and that neither low-latency nor ultra-low-latency mode supports 4K. YouTube latency choice Typical use described by YouTube Trade-off to consider
Normal Non-interactive streams; YouTube describes it as offering the lowest viewer buffering. Greater delay than the interactive modes.
Low Streams with limited audience interaction. Less read-ahead buffer than normal mode, so playback has less room to absorb delivery variation.
Ultra-low Real-time conversation and highly interactive streams. Can increase buffering; does not support 4K.

These are YouTube-specific behaviors and may change. Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not expose the same latency selection. Choose a mode based on whether viewers need to respond in near real time, then check stream health and viewer buffering rather than judging only from the encoder’s preview.

How protocol affects live-stream delay

On YouTube, RTMP and RTMPS can be used for normal, low or ultra-low latency. RTMPS adds encryption for the transmission to YouTube. HLS and DASH support newer codec options for high-resolution workflows, but generally add more delay than RTMP because they deliver media in segments. These are broad protocol trade-offs; the platform’s actual configuration and delivery path still matter. YouTube Help: encoder settings and protocols

HLS segment duration

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance recommends segments one to four seconds long. Shorter segments can reduce latency, but can raise rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency. Lower delay therefore is not a free improvement: it can make the viewing experience less tolerant of variable networks. Google for Developers: YouTube HLS ingestion

Choose the right balance for your stream

  • Prioritize interaction for live Q&A, auctions, coaching or audience participation where responses need to arrive quickly. Use the platform’s lower-latency option, while watching for buffering and any resolution restrictions.
  • Prioritize continuity for a performance, lecture or other stream where uninterrupted playback matters more than immediate chat response. Normal latency’s larger buffer can help tolerate delivery variation.
  • Match bitrate to stable upload capacity. If the connection varies, lowering the encoder bitrate or output resolution can be more useful than choosing a lower-latency platform mode.
  • Consider resolution, frame rate and codec together. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more video bitrate; a more efficient supported codec may lower the rate needed for comparable image quality.
  • Consider the whole delivery chain. Ingest protocol, segment duration, platform processing, viewer devices and viewer-network conditions all shape the delay people actually see.

The IETF notes that low-latency delivery can involve higher cost, lower media quality, less adaptive-bitrate flexibility, fewer resolution choices and greater sensitivity to transient network disruption. Those trade-offs vary by implementation; a lower latency target is not automatically the best choice for every audience. RFC 9317

Diagnose lag, buffering or dropped frames

  1. Test upload stability. Run an upload-speed test and compare its stable result with the encoder’s configured bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; one brief peak is not evidence that the connection can sustain the stream. YouTube Help
  2. If the encoder reports dropped frames, reduce the load. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or an inability to keep up with the configured bitrate. Lower the video bitrate, reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed, and check whether the selected streaming server route is contributing to the problem. OBS troubleshooting
  3. Use Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. Ethernet can improve the stability of the local link, but it cannot increase your ISP plan’s capacity or guarantee lower glass-to-glass latency. OBS troubleshooting
  4. If video plays steadily but is behind the event, check latency mode and buffering. Choose a platform mode appropriate to the interaction required, then monitor stream health and viewer buffering. A stable upload alone cannot remove delay introduced elsewhere in the delivery chain. YouTube Help
  5. If a change improves delay but causes rebuffering, restore some headroom. A larger buffer, less aggressive latency target, or more stable delivery path may be a better fit than pushing for the lowest possible delay.
