A Toshiba T1000 shell from the 1980s now houses a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, an 8.8-inch ultra-wide capacitive touchscreen, a modern mechanical keyboard and a reported 10Ah battery. It is a maker’s conversion—not a restoration of the original computer—and the available coverage does not establish the exact display model, battery runtime or a parts list that will fit every T1000.
What is inside the T1000 sleeper build?
Maker Nils, who posts as nilseuropa, built the portable computer in an empty Toshiba T1000 shell. Hackster.io reports that none of the notebook’s original electronics were reused. A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B serves as the main computer, with a modern touchscreen, keyboard, battery and rear-mounted ports in place of the original hardware. Tom’s Hardware also describes a Waveshare 8.8-inch touchscreen and a 10,000 mAh battery.
| Part | What coverage identifies | What is not specified |
|---|---|---|
| Main computer | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | Specific memory configuration and operating-system setup are not stated in the project coverage. |
| Display | 8.8-inch ultra-wide capacitive touchscreen; connected to the Pi through its MIPI DSI interface. Tom’s Hardware identifies it as a Waveshare display. | Exact model or SKU, resolution, and mounting details are not stated. |
| Keyboard | Modern mechanical keyboard | Brand, model and layout are not stated. |
| Battery | 10Ah, also reported as 10,000 mAh | Exact model, electrical implementation and measured runtime are not stated. |
| Ports | Additional ports mounted at the rear | The complete port list and wiring details are not stated. |
The board’s identity is documented on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B product page. The project articles, rather than a complete build guide, are the source for the conversion’s reported component choices: Hackster.io’s feature by Gareth Halfacree and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage by Ash Hill.
How does the modern screen differ from the original?
The original T1000 was introduced in 1987. Hackster reports an Intel 8088-compatible processor running at 4.77 MHz and 512 kB of memory, expandable to 1.2 MB. A transcription of the Toshiba T1000 maintenance manual identifies an 80C88-class CPU, 512 kB of system memory and an original monochrome LCD measuring 640 columns by 200 rows.

That 640-by-200 specification belongs to the vintage machine, not the sleeper build. The conversion uses a separate, modern 8.8-inch full-color ultra-wide touchscreen. Although the reports describe it as high-resolution, they do not provide a pixel resolution or exact panel model.
Why did the builder replace the original electronics?
Nils had a fully restored T1000 as well as this conversion, and said he liked the original machine’s form factor and display. The obstacle was the original screen interface: its custom Toshiba chips lacked a datasheet he could find. He initially considered connecting the screen directly to the Broadcom chip’s GPIO pins, but chose a modern display instead, explaining that “it is always better to finish something” than leave a half-ready project in a box. Those comments appear in Halfacree’s Hackster.io feature.

The decision reflects two different goals. A restoration preserves and repairs the original electronics; this sleeper build keeps the distinctive case while replacing the computer inside. The latter makes room for modern ports and a color touchscreen, but it does not preserve the T1000’s original display or circuitry.
Can you reproduce the build with another screen or battery?
The published component details are not enough to confirm that a similarly sized screen or battery will fit another T1000 shell. The reports do not include exact display, keyboard or battery model numbers, a complete wiring diagram, full project cost, or measured battery runtime. Nor do they establish that every 8.8-inch DSI touchscreen is electrically or mechanically interchangeable with the one used.

Before choosing substitute parts, verify the physical dimensions and mounting points, the display’s resolution and controller compatibility, the interface and touch support, and each component’s power requirements. The DSI connection reported for this build describes its screen-to-Pi interface; it is not, by itself, a compatibility guarantee for another panel or a different shell.

The available project coverage identifies the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B but does not report gaming tests, performance results or specific games. The presence of a Pi does not establish how well any particular game would run in this enclosure, so the build should not be treated as a tested gaming machine.
