A standalone ESP32-CAM can send a low-resolution picture over a radio link by converting the captured image into SSTV audio. The project by Dzl TheEvilGenius outputs PWM-modulated audio on GPIO4, which can be fed to a transmitter’s analog input; a second radio or an SDR receiver can capture the signal for SSTV software to turn back into an image.

How the ESP32-CAM SSTV camera works

The build uses a classic ESP32-CAM development board to take a picture, then firmware encodes it as audio in one of two supported slow-scan television (SSTV) formats: Robot color24 or Martin M1. Rather than sending a conventional digital file, it represents the image as audio tones that a compatible receiver can decode.

  1. Capture: The ESP32-CAM takes a still image.
  2. Encode: Firmware converts the image into SSTV audio using Robot color24 or Martin M1.
  3. Transmit: GPIO4 produces PWM-modulated audio that can be connected approximately directly to a radio transmitter’s analog input.
  4. Receive and decode: A receiving radio or SDR provides the audio to SSTV receiver software, which demodulates it into an image.

The project’s hardware and signal path are described by Dzl TheEvilGenius’s project page; Hackaday’s coverage of the transceiver setup also outlines the ESP32 output and radio arrangement.

What radio can receive an SSTV picture?

A second Baofeng-style handheld transceiver can serve as a receiver, according to Hackaday, and a USB SDR dongle is another option. In either case, the received audio must reach SSTV receiver software; the radio alone does not turn the audio into a viewable picture.

  • Handheld radio: A compatible transceiver can receive the signal and provide audio to decoding software.
  • USB SDR: An SDR dongle can receive the radio signal and pass audio to software for SSTV decoding.

For a basic build, the ESP32-CAM is the camera and encoder, a suitable transmitter carries the audio, and a separate receiver plus SSTV software reconstructs the image. The project describes the PWM output as approximately direct to the transmitter’s analog input; it does not publish a detailed electrical interface specification, so verify compatibility with the particular radio before connecting hardware.

Why use SSTV instead of a custom digital link?

The project author chose SSTV because designing a custom digitally modulated radio link with forward-error correction would take more work. SSTV provides an established way to represent images as audio, keeping the camera build comparatively simple for remote, low-bandwidth use.

Dzl TheEvilGenius said on September 14, 2022, that the approach “works surprisingly well and is pretty robust to noise.” That is the author’s qualitative assessment, not a controlled noise test. The project and its coverage do not report a measured range, bitrate, image-resolution benchmark, transmission-time benchmark, or quantified noise performance.

Do you need a ham radio license to transmit SSTV?

If you transmit on amateur-radio bands, licensing requirements apply. Hackaday notes that a license is required for amateur-band transmission; the specific rules depend on where you are and the frequency and service you use. Check your local regulator’s current requirements before transmitting, and use only frequencies and equipment permitted for your circumstances. Hackaday’s licensing note provides the project’s reminder, not a substitute for local regulatory guidance.

What to expect from this project

This is a practical route to sending still images over a narrowband analog radio path when simplicity matters more than transmitting a standard image file. Its defining trade-off is that the image is conveyed as SSTV audio and requires decoding software at the receiving end. Published project information does not establish numeric performance, so range, transmission duration, image detail, and robustness in a particular setup should not be assumed from the description alone.
