Elías Sarquis’s experimental Cámara Poética pairs each photograph with a short poem generated from the scene. Its first documented version, developed in 2018, used image-recognition labels and a Spanish-language Markov-chain system; the project turns a shutter press into an image-and-text artwork rather than a conventional camera feature.
What Cámara Poética does
Sarquis calls the paired photograph and poem a “poetography.” The creator describes poetography as “the semiotic language that unites the capture of light, the act of documenting, and the ability to invent connections between artificial-intelligence systems and human thoughts.” In plainer terms, the camera uses a machine’s interpretation of an image as a starting point for poetic text.
The output is not just a poem displayed beside a picture: the documented camera saves the image and its generated poem together, and an integrated speech synthesizer can read the poem aloud. The creator also defines the verb “poetograph” as obtaining poetic text through the action of light. These are Sarquis’s artistic definitions, not established technical categories. See the creator’s Cámara Poética project.
How the original poem-generation process worked
- Capture: A Raspberry Pi 3-based camera records an image.
- Analyze: The image is sent to Google Cloud Vision API, which identifies objects, colors, and concepts.
- Generate: Keywords derived from those labels seed a Markov-chain algorithm trained on a Spanish-language literary corpus. The system recombines text into a short poem.
- Pair and present: The image and poem are saved together, and a speech synthesizer plays the poem.
This explains the documented first version, not a claim that the poem is a literal description or a human-authored interpretation. The process makes connections between recognized scene elements and language drawn from the model’s literary source.

What changed after the first version
Sarquis says the project was updated in 2023 with more capable vision and AI models. A later Hackster.io report says he had switched to ChatGPT for functions previously handled by the earlier approach. The report does not establish the camera’s exact currently deployed software pipeline, so the original Google Vision-and-Markov description should not be treated as a definitive account of its present implementation. Read Cameron Coward’s Hackster.io report.
Hardware and what a build would involve
The creator identifies a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ as the CPU and documents a camera module, screen, and integrated speaker. Hackster.io also describes a clear enclosure and a large tactile shutter button. Together, those details show the project’s broad component layout, but the sources do not identify a current exact camera-module model or provide a verified parts list for reproducing the complete device.

The finished Cámara Poética is presented as an experimental art project, not a retail camera with an established price or purchase channel. The published component information is useful for understanding its design; it is not enough by itself to guarantee compatibility or provide a ready-to-follow build recipe.
Two related projects that are easy to confuse
Visor Poetográfico is a separate display device Sarquis made for showing images captured by Cámara Poética. It uses a 15-inch LCD display connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero W and covered by a translucent curtain. The camera experience is digital: Sarquis can share the resulting image-poems on Instagram or elsewhere.

Hackster.io distinguishes this work from the separately named Poetry Camera, which prints poems on receipt paper. The key difference in the reported descriptions is the format: Cámara Poética creates a digital image-poem pairing, while the Poetry Camera produces a paper printout. They should not be treated as the same device or project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the project is more than a camera novelty
Cámara Poética makes the camera’s interpretation of a scene part of the artwork. The first version translated detected objects, colors, and concepts into prompts for a language-generating process; the result joins a photograph to text and voice. That creative premise is more useful to understand than any claim that the device is a consumer product or that its poems measure what a scene “means.”
