It is a finished detective puzzle released on Steam on October 13, 2022, with 12 linked murder cases, explicit suspect–motive–weapon deductions, and a 98% positive English-language rating from 6,609 Steam reviews in the current 2026 snapshot.
There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is the bolder concept, not the safer recommendation. Its planned December 2026 release combines first-person hotel restoration, talking tools, village exploration, environmental puzzles, songs, and ghost combat. It may appeal more if you want an unusual atmospheric adventure and are willing to wait, but its final deduction structure, price, and launch timing are not yet fully established.

Its store tags include mystery, detective, investigation, puzzle, conspiracy, point-and-click, historical, and single-player. Those labels accurately describe the experience: the challenge is interpreting evidence, not winning action encounters.
How a Golden Idol case works
- Inspect the frozen scene. Examine bodies, rooms, clothing, tools, documents, and unusual visual details. The scene is paused at a decisive moment, so you can study it rather than react under time pressure.
- Collect usable clues. Important words, names, objects, and relationships become entries in the investigation interface. A clue may identify a person, establish a time, explain a motive, or connect separate cases.
- Form a hypothesis. Match what you observed to the available characters and events. A weapon in one hand, a note on a desk, and a damaged object elsewhere may need to be read together.
- Submit the required answers. The game asks you to identify suspects, motives, and murder weapons. You can revise your entries when the evidence contradicts your first theory.
- Use the wider conspiracy. Later cases reward memory of earlier names and events. The 12-death structure turns individual puzzles into a historical investigation.
This format is demanding but legible. You always know what kind of answer the case requires, while the route to that answer is yours to discover. The game does not depend on reflexes, combat skill, or random guessing.
Reception and available editions
Steam currently shows 98% positive from 6,609 English reviews in a 2026 snapshot. Recent reviews are listed separately at 93% positive from 113 reviews, so those figures should be read as time-specific snapshots rather than permanent scores.
Steam lists the base game, complete-story and complete-edition bundles, a soundtrack, and two mystery DLC packs. The practical purchase path is digital Steam ownership; no physical edition is established here. If you want the complete connected mystery, check which bundle includes the episodes and DLC at the time you buy.
What There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is trying to do
There Are No Ghosts at the Grand comes from developer and publisher Friday Sundae. You play Chris David, who unexpectedly inherits a dilapidated English hotel. The premise gives Chris exactly 30 days and 30 nights to restore the property before the building, its supernatural inhabitants, or something else claims him.
The game is planned for December 2026. Its Steam listing says it is not yet available and has no user reviews in the current snapshot. Xbox Wire describes an Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC release in 2026, day-one availability through Game Pass, and Xbox Play Anywhere support. An August 25, 2026 Gematsu report specifies PC Early Access through Steam and the Microsoft Store in December, followed by a later full release on Xbox Series and PC. Treat those dates and sequencing as plans, not guarantees.

The tools are not ordinary inventory items. Their personalities and dialogue are part of the game’s identity, and the renovation tasks create a physical reason to revisit rooms and explore the surrounding settlement. The published descriptions also mention moped travel, boat maintenance, coordinate puzzles, freely explorable spaces, and memory-bubble reconstruction puzzles.
The nighttime supernatural loop
At night, the same tools become weapons against ghosts and other supernatural threats. Furniture can be used in combat, so the renovation system and the danger system are deliberately connected instead of being separate minigames.
This day–night structure gives Grand a broader activity mix than Golden Idol. You may spend one segment solving an environmental problem, another traveling by moped or maintaining a boat, and another defending yourself from supernatural enemies. The published material does not establish whether every mystery ends with a formal suspect–motive–weapon questionnaire.
A musical mystery
Grand is explicitly presented as a musical. Characters have individual songs, and dialogue choices can change Chris’s sung response. The described styles range from spooky ska to wartime jazz and skater punk.

The overlap is atmosphere: both use strange deaths, hidden histories, and a strong sense of place to make you curious. The mechanical overlap is limited. Calling Grand a Golden Idol-style deduction game would promise a structure that its published material has not confirmed.
Which game is better for different kinds of players?
Choose Golden Idol if you want deduction first
- You want every chapter to revolve around identifying what happened at a crime scene.
- You enjoy reading visual details, cross-referencing names, and testing theories.
- You prefer a finished campaign with a known scope rather than a forthcoming release.
- You want a mystery that can be played at your own pace without combat or time-sensitive reflexes.
- You like historical conspiracies and a connected sequence of cases.
Golden Idol is especially suitable for players who describe themselves as detective-puzzle fans rather than adventure-game generalists. Its central question is not merely whether a supernatural event occurred; it is who did what, why, and with which method.
Choose Grand if you want novelty and atmosphere
- You are drawn to a first-person hotel you can physically restore and explore.
- You want a game that mixes environmental puzzles with ghost combat.
- Talking tools, musical conversations, and unusual genres sound appealing rather than distracting.
- You prefer one broad setting and an evolving personal mystery to a case-by-case investigation board.
- You are comfortable waiting for a planned release or entering PC Early Access when it arrives.
Grand is the more adventurous bet. Its appeal depends on whether the individual systems reinforce one another in the finished game: restoration should make exploration meaningful, songs should deepen character relationships, and the night loop should make the hotel feel dangerous without overwhelming its puzzle side.

Deduction depth
Golden Idol has a clearly defined deduction test. Evidence is visible, the answer categories are explicit, and incorrect assumptions can be corrected by revisiting the scene. The 12-case arc also lets information accumulate over decades, so a name or object can become more significant later.
Grand’s official descriptions establish a supernatural mystery but not an equivalent deduction board. It may ask you to interpret memories, coordinates, environmental clues, and the hotel’s history, yet the exact balance between free-form inference and conventional puzzle solving remains unknown before release.
Exploration breadth
Golden Idol’s spaces are designed primarily for inspection. You examine a bounded scene and extract the facts needed for the case. Movement serves observation.

Grand makes movement a major activity. The hotel, village, travel routes, boat, and moped are part of the play space. You are expected to repair, navigate, return to locations, and solve problems embedded in the environment. If your favorite mystery moments come from opening every room and discovering how a location works, Grand has the stronger documented fit.
Pacing and concentration
Golden Idol supports concentrated sessions: one scene can occupy your attention until the logic clicks. Because there is no combat loop, interruptions are mostly your own decisions about when to inspect or submit.
Grand’s 30-day and 30-night framework suggests a more varied rhythm. Renovation tasks, travel, songs, puzzles, and night encounters may create momentum, but players who want a pure chain of deduction could find the broader activity mix less focused.
Availability and platform decision
Buying Golden Idol now
Golden Idol is released on Steam and can be purchased digitally. Steam lists the original game alongside complete-story and complete-edition bundles, the soundtrack, and two mystery DLC packs. Confirm the contents of each bundle on the store page because package names and included content can change.
Its 2022 release date does not make it obsolete: the connected 12-case structure remains the reason to choose it, and the current Steam review snapshot indicates sustained approval. The most important limitation is simply that it is a focused pixel-art deduction game; it will not substitute for a first-person exploration adventure.
Waiting for Grand
Grand is not yet available on Steam in the current listing. The planned PC path is Early Access through Steam and the Microsoft Store in December 2026, with a later full release on Xbox Series and PC reported by Gematsu. Xbox Wire separately identifies Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC, day-one Game Pass, and Xbox Play Anywhere.

They are not two versions of the same detective formula
Golden Idol is built around crime-scene deduction. Grand is built around a broader hotel adventure with supernatural systems. Shared words such as mystery, ghosts, or investigation do not make their moment-to-moment play equivalent.
Grand is not confirmed as a 12-case investigation
The available descriptions mention the hotel’s history, its former owners, townspeople, Chris’s past, environmental puzzles, and memory reconstruction. They do not promise 12 standalone deaths or a required suspect–motive–weapon answer screen.

Buy and play The Case of the Golden Idol if your priority is a finished, highly focused detective puzzle. Its 12 connected deaths, 50-year conspiracy, and explicit evidence-solving structure answer the central mystery-game question directly: can you infer who did what and why?
Wishlist or wait for There Are No Ghosts at the Grand if the idea of restoring an English hotel with talking tools, singing through conversations, exploring a village, and fighting ghosts is more exciting than a conventional deduction board. It is the more unconventional project, but its December 2026 timing and final investigation design still need to be proven in the released game.
