There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is built around a strict 30-day, 30-night investigation. In daylight, restore the inherited seaside hotel and search the spaces you uncover; after dark, use those same renovation tools to survive supernatural attacks. The most reliable routine is to finish a room’s visible work, inspect it again for hidden evidence, record the lead on Adam’s crime board, and then follow that lead into Kingswood-on-Sea, its coves, islands, boat routes, bunkers and shops.
Friday Sundae lists the game for a planned December 2026 Steam release and shows a downloadable demo. The game is therefore not yet a finished retail release, and interface details may change before launch.
What the game asks you to do
You play Chris David, who inherits a badly damaged English seaside hotel. The property, its former owners, the village and Chris’s own past are connected to a supernatural mystery. You have 30 days and 30 nights to make the Grand usable while discovering what happened to Chris’s father, the previous owner.

The core loop
- Choose a daylight renovation objective. Decide which room or damaged feature you can complete without spending the whole day travelling.
- Restore the visible surfaces. Use the appropriate tool to remove damaged material, repaint, clean or reposition furniture.
- Search the finished space. Hidden rooms, symbols, papers, old fixtures and environmental arrangements often become apparent only after the obvious work is done.
- Connect the evidence. Compare what you found with blueprints, doors, symbols and objects elsewhere in the hotel.
- Move the investigation outward. A clue may direct you to a local, shop, boat route, island, bunker or cove rather than to another marked hotel task.
- Return and prepare for night. Darkness changes the hotel and village, so do not leave yourself exposed without the tools and time to deal with threats.
The decoration system is intentionally forgiving. Xbox Wire describes the rule as: “You don’t have to get every spot – just enough is close enough.” Concentrate on reaching the room’s completion state, then spend the remaining daylight on investigation rather than trying to make every surface cosmetically perfect.
What counts as progress?
Progress has two connected parts. A room must reach its usable renovation state, but that alone does not solve the mystery. The second part is discovery: exposing a hidden feature, recognizing a symbol, reading an object, or finding the environmental arrangement that links one location to another. If a room is technically complete but the story has not advanced, assume there is still evidence to inspect or a conversation to trigger.
The game’s published description also frames the experience as “You’ll renovate. You’ll investigate. You’ll duet.” The duet reference matters because songs and verse-based exchanges are part of how characters communicate history and motive, not merely a cosmetic musical feature.
How to investigate a room without missing evidence
1. Complete the obvious renovation first
Start with the task the room presents most clearly: blast away old material, apply paint, clear debris or place and remove furniture. A room can look finished while still containing a clue, but searching before the main obstruction is removed makes it harder to tell what is genuinely new.
2. Make a slow perimeter sweep
After the completion state appears, walk the room methodically. Check walls, floors, doors, furniture, corners and the edges where two surfaces meet. Look for anything that does not fit the room’s restored appearance: a symbol, unusual seam, readable object, blocked opening or arrangement that resembles a pattern seen elsewhere.
3. Recheck what you stripped away
Pay special attention to places where paper, paint, broken furniture or old fixtures were removed. The game repeatedly frames clues as things hidden beneath the hotel’s surface. A newly exposed wall or floor can matter more than the object you just cleaned.
4. Use blueprints and environmental logic
Old blueprints can reveal spaces that are not obvious from the room you are standing in. Compare their outlines with doors, symbols, wall lengths and furniture placement. Environmental puzzles are designed for lateral thinking: the answer may be a relationship between two rooms or objects rather than a conventional key sitting in front of you.
5. Treat every readable item as a lead
When you find a paper, inscription, object or symbol, identify what kind of lead it provides. Is it naming a person, pointing to a place, describing an event or indicating an object? That classification tells you what to revisit next and prevents aimless searching.
6. Search again after story changes
New dialogue, a completed quest or an opened route can change the meaning of an earlier room. If a character mentions a symbol, owner or location that you have already seen, return to the relevant space and inspect it with that new context. This is especially useful when a room appeared empty before a hidden area was revealed.
7. Use a consistent sweep order
A fixed routine reduces the chance of overlooking a small interaction. Start at the entrance, work clockwise around the walls, then inspect the centre of the room and finish with doors, thresholds and any newly exposed opening. The game does not require you to search every pixel, but a repeatable route helps distinguish an untouched corner from a place you have already cleared.

Adam’s crime board: turning clues into a case
The clearest published clue-tracking system is Adam’s crime board. PC Gamer describes it as the place where you gather clues and work out how and why Chris’s father disappeared. It is more useful when you treat it as a case file than as a checklist.

How to process a new clue
- Record the exact subject. Note the person, place, object or event named or implied by the evidence.
- Look for a second connection. A clue becomes actionable when it links to another board item, a room feature, a blueprint or a character’s story.
- Test the proposed explanation. Visit the connected location and compare physical evidence with what you were told.
- Update your working theory. If the evidence contradicts a statement, keep both pieces in mind rather than discarding the contradiction.
The game’s mystery is intentionally unreliable. Creative director and Friday Sundae co-founder Anil Glendinning says, “you can’t trust the game. It’s lying to you right in the title.” Chris is also an unreliable narrator, and lies, misdirection and twists are central to the design. Use the board to preserve competing possibilities until the hotel and village evidence support one of them.
A practical board notation
- Person: who is connected to the clue and what they claim.
- Place: the room, village location, island, bunker, cove or route involved.
- Object: the physical item, symbol, blueprint or fixture you can verify.
- Event: the disappearance, encounter or historical incident the evidence describes.
- Confidence: whether the connection is directly observed, reported by a character or still only a theory.
This separation matters because a confident character statement is not the same as a physical observation. When the two disagree, investigate the location rather than assuming the board’s first interpretation is correct.
When the board seems to stop moving
A stalled case does not necessarily mean you missed a single hidden button. Check whether the last clue is a person, place, object or event, then pursue the matching category. Talk to the relevant local, revisit the room or blueprint, or travel to the named village destination. Because clues can point beyond the hotel, a board connection may require a boat route, island, bunker or cove before the next relationship becomes clear.
Day and night: plan the 30-day limit
What to do in daylight
Daylight is the safer period for room work, clue inspection and travel. Pick one clear renovation objective, complete it, search the result and decide whether the next lead is close enough to pursue before night. Leaving a buffer is valuable: you need time to get back, orient yourself and deal with any threat that appears as the world changes.
What changes after dark
At night, the hotel and village become dangerous. Your tools change modes, turning the equipment used for restoration into your main defense. Learn each night function as soon as the tool appears rather than waiting for a crisis.

Paint is particularly important to remember: it is not only decoration. If an attacker is invisible, switch to the paint sprayer rather than wasting time searching for a visible target. Likewise, do not assume the furniture cannon becomes useless once a room is tidy; it can still hit supernatural threats.
Should you leave the hotel?
Yes. Xbox Wire says you can leave the hotel at any time, and the surrounding village is part of the investigation rather than a decorative backdrop. Leave when a clue points outward or when a character’s quest requires it, but weigh the trip against the clock and your readiness for night.
What does the 30-day structure change?
It makes sequencing important without requiring perfect decoration. A day spent travelling, restoring a room and then searching it has a different value from a day spent polishing surfaces that are already “close enough.” Put the highest-confidence lead first, and avoid beginning a long village excursion when you have no time to investigate the destination or return safely. The 30 nights are not a separate campaign: they are the period in which the same spaces and tools become more hazardous.

Planning routes through Kingswood-on-Sea

Three questions before leaving
- Time cost: Can you reach the destination, investigate it and return before darkness changes the risk?
- Clue density: Does the destination connect to a person, object or event already on Adam’s board?
- Safety and tools: If night arrives away from the hotel, do you know which tool mode handles the threat you may meet?
Use the scooter for efficient movement when the destination is clear, and treat activities such as metal detecting or searching coves as deliberate investigations. Sunken treasures and boat routes are not isolated collectibles when a hotel clue points toward them; they can provide the missing environmental evidence needed to test a theory.
How to avoid a pointless excursion
Before setting out, name the question you are trying to answer: which person is connected to the object, where an event occurred, or whether a symbol matches a location. If you cannot state the question, spend the remaining daylight talking to locals or inspecting the hotel instead. This keeps the village’s optional activities tied to the investigation rather than turning them into unstructured sightseeing.
Characters, songs and dialogue choices
Chris’s investigation is social as well as spatial. The mayor, caretaker Colin, Lily, Maddie, Adam, Mr Bones and other locals are tied to rooms, quests, secrets or songs. Each local has a story, agenda and questline, so a conversation can be as important as a newly exposed wall.
Characters’ songs function as exposition, and verse-based dialogue choices can alter the story. Listen for details that identify a place, relationship or past event, then compare them with what the hotel shows you. A song or conversation may supply context without proving that the speaker is truthful.
Conversation habits that prevent missed context
- Speak with a character again after completing a related room or board connection.
- Record names and locations that recur in different songs or conversations.
- When dialogue offers choices, select the response that tests your current theory rather than automatically agreeing with it.
- Follow a character’s questline far enough to connect its personal story to a physical location.
Do not treat a dialogue choice as a simple good-versus-bad morality test.
