The ROG Xbox Ally is ASUS hardware built around Microsoft’s effort to make Windows handheld gaming feel more like using an Xbox. Its Xbox interface brings games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC storefronts together, while Windows keeps access to apps, mods, and competing game stores. That is a bid to make Xbox a familiar front door to PC handheld gaming—not evidence that Microsoft has already captured the market.
What is the Xbox Ally?
The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows gaming handheld developed by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox. ASUS supplies the ROG hardware, while Microsoft contributes the Xbox-focused interface and services. Xbox and ASUS unveiled two models on June 8, 2025: the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-spec ROG Xbox Ally X. They became available on October 16, 2025, with availability later reported in 45 countries; local availability and purchase bundles can vary.
Both devices are designed for handheld PC gaming, with a 7-inch Full HD 120Hz display, Windows 11, and controller-style grips. They support playing games installed on the device, Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta), and Xbox Remote Play. The Xbox full-screen experience puts a controller-navigable library and gaming interface at the center, while the underlying Windows system remains available for other applications and storefronts.
ROG Xbox Ally vs. ROG Xbox Ally X: what changes?
The standard Ally is the lower-priced model; the Ally X is positioned for players who want more processor and memory headroom. Xbox’s U.S. estimated retail prices were published for the 2025 launch and may change. The specifications below reflect Xbox and ASUS product information, not independent performance testing.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if value matters most
The standard model is the more affordable entry point into the Xbox handheld interface and Windows PC game library. Its Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD are the published configuration. Choose it if those specifications and the lower launch price meet your needs; the available official specifications alone do not establish how it performs in a particular game.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want more headroom
The Ally X adds a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of high-speed RAM, and a larger storage configuration. Those upgrades make it the performance-oriented option on paper, but Xbox and ASUS specifications do not substitute for independent tests of frame rates, battery life, or performance against other handhelds. The substantial launch-price difference is worth weighing against the games and applications you actually plan to run.
How Microsoft is trying to win over PC handheld players
The Xbox Ally’s market strategy is to combine the familiarity of an Xbox-style interface with the breadth of a Windows gaming PC. Each piece addresses a different friction point for handheld play:

- A controller-friendly starting point: Xbox full-screen mode, a dedicated Xbox button, controller-inspired grips, and a handheld-oriented Game Bar aim to make navigation feel less like operating a desktop PC.
- A consolidated library: Xbox describes the interface as bringing Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and installed games from other PC storefronts into one place. A unified view can make games easier to find, but it does not mean every store uses the same account, purchase, or launcher.
- Windows access beyond Xbox: Windows lets owners install other storefronts and use applications such as Discord and Twitch, as well as play with supported mods. ASUS lists Steam, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net among the available PC storefronts.
- Compatibility cues: Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program labels games as “Handheld Optimized” or “Mostly Compatible.” Xbox said thousands of titles carried labels at launch; a label is useful guidance, not a guarantee that every game will suit every player’s settings or preferences.
- A partner-built device: ASUS provides the ROG hardware platform and AMD the Ryzen Z2-series processors. Microsoft can extend the Xbox experience through a partner device rather than selling this handheld as a wholly Microsoft-manufactured product.
These are mechanisms for attracting players and strengthening Xbox’s presence across devices. They do not establish how many Ally units have sold or what share of the handheld market Xbox has captured. The official material cited here provides no authoritative sell-through, installed-base, or market-share figure.

Can the Xbox Ally play Steam and Epic Games Store games?
Yes. The Ally runs Windows 11, and ASUS identifies Steam and Epic Games Store as supported storefronts, alongside Battle.net. You can install games through the relevant PC stores, subject to each game’s own system requirements, launcher, account, and compatibility needs. The Xbox interface’s consolidated library does not make purchases in those stores into Xbox Store purchases or merge their account systems.
Can you play Xbox games on the Ally?
Yes, through more than one route, depending on the game and how you want to play:

- Install and play on the handheld: Play compatible PC games installed locally, including Xbox PC titles and games available through PC storefronts. This is native play; it uses the Ally’s hardware.
- Use Xbox Play Anywhere: Xbox says more than 1,000 Play Anywhere titles support play across Xbox, PC, and handheld. The feature applies to participating titles, not every game in an Xbox library.
- Stream from your console with Remote Play: Remote Play lets you play supported games from your Xbox console on the handheld over a network connection. In this mode, the console runs the game.
- Stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta): Cloud play streams supported games from Xbox’s service rather than running them locally. Access and game availability depend on the service, region, and applicable plan.
These approaches are not interchangeable: locally installed play depends on the game and Ally’s hardware, Remote Play depends on access to your console and network, and cloud gaming depends on service availability and a suitable connection.

Yes. Xbox lists Game Pass, Xbox Remote Play, and Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) among the Ally’s supported Xbox experiences. The exact Game Pass catalog and benefits depend on the applicable subscription and region. Xbox said select markets may include three months of Game Pass Premium or PC Game Pass with purchase; the offer is market-dependent, and eligibility and terms can vary by retailer and location.

The available official Xbox and ASUS information does not establish an independent head-to-head verdict against Steam Deck, so there is no evidence-based basis here to call one universally better. The Ally’s clearest distinction is its Xbox-centered interface layered over Windows, with access to multiple PC storefronts and Windows applications. Whether that suits you better depends on your preferred games, operating system, interface, and how you plan to play—not on a comparative performance result established by these specifications.
What can you connect to the Xbox Ally?
The Ally can be used with external accessories for a more desk-like setup. ASUS lists the optional ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 for connecting an external monitor, keyboard, or mouse, and recommends a dock capable of 130W for that setup. The dock is an accessory, not a requirement for handheld play.
