That claim is specific to this package, not every version of the chip, and the worldwide ranking is TI’s claim rather than an independently verified comparison across all manufacturers.
Which microcontroller is the world’s smallest?
The device behind the claim is Texas Instruments’ MSPM0C1104, an Arm Cortex-M0+ microcontroller. TI announced it on March 11, 2025, describing the eight-ball wafer-chip-scale package (WCSP) as the world’s smallest MCU package and 38% smaller than the industry’s then-current smallest MCU. TI’s announcement does not name the comparison device or explain its comparison method, so treat both superlatives as the company’s claims.
TI’s current product page identifies the tiny package as DSBGA and gives its dimensions as 1.6 mm × 0.861 mm, or 1.3776 mm². The announcement rounded the area to 1.38 mm². The chip is also available in larger packages, so the 1.38 mm² figure describes the DSBGA package footprint—not the MCU in every configuration.
TI vice president and general manager of MSP Microcontrollers Vinay Agarwal said in the announcement: “In tiny systems such as earbuds and medical probes, board space is a scarce and valuable resource.” TI cites earbuds, medical probes, wearables and personal electronics as possible application settings; those examples do not establish that any particular commercial product uses this MCU.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What does the MSPM0C1104 offer?
TI’s product page lists these specifications for the MSPM0C1104:
- Core: Arm Cortex-M0+ running at up to 24 MHz.
- Memory: up to 16 KB of flash and 1 KB of SRAM.
- Analog: 12-bit SAR analog-to-digital converter.
- Connectivity: UART, SPI and I²C.
- Supply voltage: 1.62 V to 3.6 V.
- Operating temperature: −40°C to 125°C.
TI reports up to 18 GPIOs at the family level, but the number accessible depends on package. Do not assume that the eight-ball DSBGA exposes as many I/O pins as a larger option; use the datasheet’s package-specific pinout to check a design.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
How do the package options compare?
TI lists the MSPM0C1104 in packages ranging from eight to 20 pins. The smallest footprint trades physical space for fewer connections and tighter assembly and handling requirements.
| Package option | Pin count | Footprint information on TI’s product page |
|---|---|---|
| DSBGA | 8 | 1.3776 mm² (1.6 mm × 0.861 mm) |
| SOT | 8 or 16 | Dimensions not stated here; check TI’s package data |
| WSON | 8 | Dimensions not stated here; check TI’s package data |
| VSSOP | 20 | Dimensions not stated here; check TI’s package data |
| TSSOP | 20 | Dimensions not stated here; check TI’s package data |
| WQFN | 20 | Dimensions not stated here; check TI’s package data |
Choose by more than footprint alone. Confirm the required GPIO count and peripherals, then weigh board area against package handling and assembly constraints. If a design needs more pins, TI’s larger package options may be a better fit than the eight-ball DSBGA.
